    When my uncle was around, we'd do a lot of bbq. Big hunk a grill, we'd build up an actual fire under with cuttings from the oaks in the forest behind his house and have cow or pork and onions and the good stuff. Those were the good days. Years, years later i found out the grill was in fact a cutting off a Panzer's armor that he got from a scrap yard in Ukraine in his younger travelling years. This reminded me heavily of that, and that's nice.

    I don't know mate... if you're talking about alone I agree, but there's something that allows some people to unspokenly work together as a unit and others... just not. My "BFF" and I and I can just decide we're going to do something together and do it without hardly any communication, while I have other friends (and family members) who I just want to tell them to get out of my way and let me get it done myself because they don't understand what I need and when I explain it, they somehow manage to do the opposite... so it makes it harder.

    Fantastic idea! You inspired me to make a similar plate that cooks very well. Perfect for grilled onions and bacon! Although my 3/8" plate is likely more "Dew Claw" sized, it gets the job done, and heats up fairly quickly. I added a slight support under the front edge so the grease (and subsequent fire) drain to the back. Thanks for the great vi' jayos! The Canadian slang and idioms are priceless!

The bread and pizza you can make is second only to a wood fired, brick oven - and not by much. Heavy bastards however... Seasoned with flax/linseed oil they will easily outlast you.

    Ryan Christensen If you cook for a huge group and needed to keep food roaring for multiple hours at a moderate heat (as at a diner for instance) you would be spot on. (I used to hate cleaning them!) That said, I have not felt the need to use any abrasives on my steels (yet!). As long as they are seasoned and pre-heated properly, food barely sticks, and a splash of water is enough to loosen anything that the spatula doesn't get off.

    Careful with linseed oil if it isn't food grade. It's extracted chemically and contains traces of organic solvents (which will probably get cooked off in the seasoning) and heavy metals (which won't).

    Flax oil is food grade linseed. All of the good properties without the bad. You just have to make sure what you get is 100% flax without any other additive. It makes cast iron very dark grey almost jet black and is VERY hard and nonstick.

    A BBQ grill and commercial flat top grill might have about the same BTU rating for the same size. The commercial grill I used, would be up and able to start cooking on in about 10 minutes. Not full warmed yet, but enough. Within 15 or 20, it was completely ready, but might have been less if we didn't cook on it right away. This is a little thicker but not by much. I wouldn't be surprised if it was ready much quicker than you expect.

    I cut 1iin with 60amp plasma, but I'd have used the horizontal bandsaw for this piece and rounded the edges with the grinder.18x24 3sf. cubic foot is 12sf 490lbs . So you got a 1/4 of that 120+2.5 122.5lbs - the grease canal. Tell the guy at the hardware store that u want "26 baum" hcl and dont mix with water. Pour straight on the steel and mill scale is gone quicker that a p100d gets to 100kph. Youd probably need about 25lbs of baking soda to neutralize that acid if it were a gallon of 26. Pool acid is typically less.

    The Triggerati not sure aboot 26 baum. But he's referencing hydrochloric acid.....best i remember from chemistry is the max concentration of HCl you can get is mid-30% (36.5%?). Edit:did some more poking. Apparently acids are sold by "Baume". Its a weight based system? Really just skimmed, but the baum was a typo for baumé

  • @JimmysTractor

    @JimmysTractor

    The Triggerati sorry to drop the baume on you. It's an old system 5hat sucks! You start with specific gravity of water which is 145(whatever that means) and go like this to get specific gravity- 145/(145-26) and you wind up with HCl with a specific gravity of 1.2185 which you then need a chart to tell you that its about 44% wich is by volume. Wish i could post a pic, but HD sells pool acid and has a pic- label says 20° which means 20 baume or 31.45%. With all that said, its no wonder my 26 baume takes the zinc off my galvanized steel so fast! sometimes you will hear that you should use a 25% solution(like I think uncle bumble was doing), but that doesnt necessarily mean 25% HCl, it may be referring to a specific industy acid. You can see why there is so much confusion around acid. Im betting he used 15% pool acid then diluted it 1:4 which is the standard dilution recommended for cleaning steel, but only when used with industry standard 33% as used in steel industry. I buy 26(44%) because it is the best deal.

    Same here, I miss that big gas powered beast. This video got me on a search and I found you can get smaller 16 inch electrics with a 3/4 plate for about $450 USD but the ones that seem worth buying require 220v. Dunno about you but I don't think my roommates would appreciate me pulling out the oven every night to plug it in.

    Cheers. I suppose I was daydreaming about being a homeowner again. Fortunately I live in a bachelor apartment and don't pay for my hydro. All I'd have to do is run an extension cord from our building's laundry room for 220 V and then I''m ripping. It's totally feasible. Hell, I could run a restaurant out of my apartment. Totally sound investment.

    Yes, likely a better plan would be to use a second "BBQ" set up with the griddle and another for BBQ and grilling. As long as the burners are working okay, any old BBQ could do.

    Recovering CNC Oxy-Fuel burn guy here. The plate split apart at the end of the cut because of the heat of the cut itself expanding the material close to the kerf. ....which I guess you could say is (momentary) internal stress, but I took you to mean that the stress was inherent in the plate at all times. For instance, if you were to shear the plate, it shouldn't curve out like that.

    Tim Farmer Oh there's internal stresses in those plates alright. Those plates come off the boat from China like big rolls of toilet paper. At least up to 1/2 inch does. They then flatten em out and cut em into 8x4 or 10x5 or whatever and ship em out to some poor scmuck with a water jet, plasma or laser cutter or AvE. As soon as you start cutting profiles into the plate it wants to warp all over the place even with the water jet cause there's all kinds of internal stresses in the plate. The thinner the material or the more holes you cut out of it the worse it gets. If you need it flat you have roll the damn thing all over again. Or mill/grind the blasted thing.

  • @ogorir

    @ogorir

    The plate doesn't(shouldn't) get more than 130 degrees. The tooth profile puts all the heat into the chip, only heat into the workpiece is friction from the side of the blade. My experience is anything over 3/4" has a lot more internal stress and will open or close depending on the grain just like wood. I think re-rolling it a bunch of times to get down to 1/2" or thinner makes the stresses more uniform.

    This is what we use for a "tradiional" BBQ plate in Australia. Before LPG was readily available (when I was a whipper snapper), we all just took a sheet of 1/4 inch steel plate and a few housebricks for a BBQ picnic - a "grill" (with bars or holes in it) was only used in some instances to let the ash drop out of the firebox. FireWood was readily available for the scavenging (proper hardwood, Eucalypt - what all BBQ's should be fueled with. lol... One can't BBQ sliced onoins on a grill with holes in it.

    You should look up making a fog buster style mist unit. Basically a fluid tank you feed 15 PSI into and have two hoses coming out of. One dips into the coolant fluid and one just takes air. Then you have a nozzle that drips the fluid into the air flow and it distributes a nice mist of coolant into the tool and keep the tool and material cool. If you run two regulators, one for the tank and one for the air flow you can get some real fine control of the mist.
