Handling Catasetum Types Coming Out of Dormancy
I get lots of messages for how to handle Ctsm types coming out of dormancy and when to water the little buggers. So, guess what I'll be talking about in this video?! I also show you what fertilizers I will be using this year, and a quick refresher on how I repot my Ctsm coming out of dormancy!

I just purchased my first one and is just coming out of dormancy...this is a very helpful video. Thank you.
Awesome video !!! Always very informative and fun to watch.
Matching hair and nails. :) FABULOUS!!! the collection is looking great. time for winter to be over already, cant wait to see more.
I love so much Catasetineas! Your plants are so amazing and healthy. Congratulations!
I have watched this video three times and also have watched most of your videos. They are awesome! Thank you for sharing. You make very clear and helpful videos.
Thank you! I learned so much more about Catasetum.
...this is the best catasetum video i watched. . .THANK YOU🤗...
Great video! That First Rays orchid fertiizer has a very similoar composition as the Rain Mix fetilizer we use here in Europe, and I have had very good results with that. I enjoy a lot your catasetum videos.
Hi Brittany, absolutely brilliant video on catasetum's early growth stages watering lesson, that’s where I am right now with my first catasetum. This video should be first on the list of beginner-growers. Thanks, I must keep an eye out for your videos.
Very important info! I want to grow some Catasetinaes in the future! Thanks for sharing!
Extremely helpful video. I do indeed follow the way you do your Ctsm and so far it is paying off. I would likely not have discovered rot in time to stop it had I not taken them out of the pot and cut off the dead roots so even if others might do things a bit differently, your way works for me and this video helps with the new phase. Your do still looks wonderful and with that color think how beautiful you will be years from now as a Senior.
Brittany, could you please do a video on your lighting system for your orchids. I get conflicting information on the amount of time/ wattage you need to grow orchids under lights. Thanks!
I definitely followed your method and its growing happily now. Thanks for your tutorial.

So happy to hear stories of success! Happy growing!
Yay! I have a catesetum that I was about to pot up and now I have the knowledge to do so.
Yes I would love to see your new fertilizer if you come to really love it
very useful video, thanks for sharing Brittany
Hello ! Thank you very much for this very interesting video ! And I am definitly interested in your future videos regading fertilizer fertilizing and the Catasetum development for sure ;) In the time being ! Take care !
It's always fascinating to see how other people grow their orchids. I only got my first one 18th months ago as a dormant bulb. It flowered last year, which encouraged me to get a few more, but wasn't sure what to do over winter because only the Lycaste that went dormant was odorata and that only dropped its leaves a couple of weeks ago and was already in growth and now has 3 buds. All my others are hybrids, except L. virginalis, and they kept their leaves. All are now in growth, and one of the hybrids, a young L. Red Stripes, is in bud. Because they didn't go dormant, and partly because I was away, only the L. virginalis got repotted, and I just dropped it into a slightly larger pot. I hope it won't have harmed them but, bearing in mind what you say about viability of old roots against new, I will repot next spring whether they are dormant or not.
Excellent video
A fertilizer video would be great as are all of your videos ! Thanks !!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Very well done, Brit! You truly are The Catasetum Queen! 😜💜💕💚

I just hacked my ctsm all out of their dry dead moss a bit ago, and I'm getting ready to put them into s/h soon. Your video came at the perfect time, but hey, orchids dictate the schedule for us, don't they? :)
Great video - thanks for all this good info! What do you use as a signal for switching from misting around the edges of the moss to regular watering? Or is it more of a schedule that you keep (e.g., mist for 2 weeks then drizzle for 2 weeks and then drench)? And at what point do you start to add fertilizer to the water?
Yes, I want to see how you fertilize your orchids.
Very informative video! My catasetums are just coming out of dormancy so this rlly helped! I can't find those ferts here so I'll use something else!

+Andrew Fan I'm glad I was able to help! I get my fertilizers online because I can't find them around where I live either.
Hi Brittany! Thank you for making this video. I have recently purchased a Fdk After Dark Sunset Valley and it's a seedling that's coming out of dormancy. It looks exactly like your third example and I have started watering it properly. I wonder if that's alright or I shouldn't water but rather mist it. Thanks in advance for your advice!
would love to see a fertilizing video, jus got my first catasetum saccatum, has like 6 bulbs and idk what to do!!
Thanks for the video. When you store the dormant bulbs, do you keep them in anything (e.g., peat moss)?
Please make an update on your catasetums! We miss you! I really would like to know how to experiment goes on...
Hallo there and thank you so much for all the info. In dormancy where we should keep the bulbs ? In a dark place or in a plastic bag in the fridge ?
Can't get enough of these videos. Watching once again before I pot up my new catasetum but DON'T water. :)
Video please on how you use your fertilizers and such - thanx
Thank you so much for telling me EXACTLY how you water them, and not just saying "I give it a little water"! Do you ever find it necessary to water during dormancy? I understand you're not supposed to unless they look "significantly shriveled," but I don't know what that looks like. To me, your "intermediate growth stage"'s backup-backup bulb is pretty shriveled. Why didn't you water that guy? Because the primary bulb looked ok? If that primary bulb hadn't been there, would you have watered it? Had you decided to, would you use the same watering method? Mist close to, but not directly on the pseudobulb? And last question: how & how much do you water a catasetum that has lost its leaves to dormancy, but is in bloom? Thank you!!!!!
Hey I have a question. When does a catasetum begin to produce a flower spike? I have one that is a little further along that you leafed out example, and its developing a bump on the side of it's new pseudobulb.
Brittany, I know next to nothing about catasetums, so this was very helpful. Thanks. Is there a particular type you would recommend for someone who likes catts, i.e. big showy flowers?
Very informative Brittany, thanks. Is that a cymbidium in the background?

yes my one and only Cymbidium. Thankfully its in spike :D

Thats good to know. We are told here that cymbids are hard to flower as we dont have the cold nights in late spring to stimulate flowering. I think you have similar climate to use, in reverse..lol
Have 5 Catasetum bulbs from last year in dormancy from December ( April Now ) they are still firm but "nothing " they were stored in low light down to 42 F ( lowest ) I now put them it sunlight every morning now 65 f to 80 f ____ but Nada ??? thanks john
Nice video Brittany, I hope I find a ctsm soon getting desperate now, lol TFS What you know :-)

Hi!!! Im from Brazil, i live in Massachusetts! I can take care of Catasetuns in Massachusetts
I just got my first catasetum.
Hi Britney, thanks for this informative video! i have a little seedling which has started to come out of dormancy and is a little smaller than stage 2 of yours, but is still in her last years sphagnum moss and started to grow new roots, can i repot it now or wait more? for repotting i would need to water it and losen the sphagnum, do you think this would make a problem?
@HolyCityOrchids

+MaryG Orchids You can repot now if you wish or leave it be and just use last year's mix. If you feel the media is too broken down to use another year I would repot sooner rather than later.

Hello! lovely channel! QUESTION: do you or did you use Neptunes fish and seaweed fertilizer? what fish type fertizers do you recommend please? ( planning on buying a few catasetums for spring!)

+Misslou2425 I used Neptunes harvest before switching to KelpMax. Neptunes is a great fish emulsion. Just remember to use it in an airy room (stinky stuff lol)
hi , located in Reunion island , I would like to find a farm that export catasetum when they are in dormance; can you help me please ? thanks
Hi Britanny, when do you start watering in full and when do you start fertilising?
@HolyCityOrchids

I work them up to a full watering. As they grow so does my watering. I can't be too much more specific than that because I just eyeball it lol.

thank you so much for this. I didn't know what to expect. mine is still dormant and I cut the roots back, But it's not really in a dark spot.I have it with my Dendrobiums so no water gets on it but it's still getting good light and some Sun. I hope its not time for it to wake up.winter just started. thanks again, Martin
I just got a catasetum it has leafed out, but it needs a repot! Help!
I repot many last weekend and one had little top growth but tons of roots which I missed. I ended up Damaging lots of roots :(
