Thanks for the detail information. It’s my first time caring for Catasetum and I was totally lost when it should go to dormancy but instead started having new growth.

I had to re pot my wine delight today. It didn't stay dormant long even without water. New growth coming faster

One of mine has a new growth as well. Catasetums really do what they want 😂 I'm going to do a one year update video today

Monnierara Black Orchid always seem to have an unusually short dormancy, according to everyone on KZread.

I'll have to do the same this year, for the last two I try to wait for spring and it's too late, the pot is already bursting with roots and it's too late for a repot 😅

Sometimes they tell you 'you can't repot till the spring' but ultimately with these orchids, they do what they want and you have to adjust! Haha. Thanks for watching!

Very good video and timeline. Do you have a video on bulb health of these orchids? I only have one and don’t know very much about them. I do believe it’s in dormancy but the bulbs don’t look too healthy like yours.

Thank you! I don't have a video on bulb health but I've shown it over the years as it bloomed. You have to water and feed very regularly in the growing season to have these do well.

how can you tell when th e roots are long enough to start watering? Do you just eyeball it through the plastic?

Correct, you will see them through the pot generally. Once they get going its pretty obvious and they start putting roots out like crazy. Better to water later when you see the roots than earlier imo.

I usually try to repot before new growth starts but sometimes they sneak up on you. Don't worry, it will still produce many, many more new roots. I am curious though, is there a reason you won't be growing it inorganic? And will you be using a self watering system for your Catasetinae as they really get into growth mode?

That's a good call to repot before the new growth. Avoids snapping those tender leaves. I got some new ones that are dormant from SVOs. That will be my weekend project 😁 As for why I didn't put these in inorganic, I got Spidermites this winter on 6 of them. I clean them up by dunking them upside down in the sink under the tap water and running the hose behind the leaves till those suckers are gone. I also do this preventatively monthly even if I don't see any. I was thinking of doing inorganic, but if I have a spidermites infestation, spagnum let's me dunk upside down more than leca can. The leca pebbles get all over. I think in the future I will move to leca (since these are heavy drinkers) but I wanted the control of being able to tip the pots upside down and dunk / spray in water till I felt good about it 😂 If you have these in leca lmk how you handle the inevitable mites!

@@NicoleDeanna I grow them in organic, but I'm trying to get away from moss. Not because I think moss is bad, it's just a pain in the neck to repot them every year. If I can pot them into something else that lets them drink sufficiently, but doesn't mean annual repotting, that's the goal. Last year it was small orchiata for some and a seedling mix for others. I'm going to try coconut husk this year. They're all in black pots so it was a guessing game when to start watering so I ordered a bunch of opaque square pots to use this year, so all the media is getting changed anyway. Spider mites are something I've never had a problem with on them. Maybe because I grow them outside in Florida? But I can understand your frustration with them, seems like a lot of people have the same issue. You might want to try using insecticidal soap on the mites. I had them on my Desert Roses and the insecticidal soap cleared them right up. Then you wouldn't have to turn the pots upside down. I know LECA is a right pain when it falls out of the pot. And if it goes down the drain, then you have to pull the drain apart and empty them from the elbow. Been there, done that.

@@michaelmccarthy4077 must be your humidity! I only have spidermite trouble in the dry winter. They love dusty leaves. During summer everything is ok. I use neem oil + soap after an aggressive upside down wash and spraying in the sink. It works really nicely. They can come back, but on the bright side, when I see spidermites, no sweat, they are easy to get rid of. When I see mealy bugs on the other hand, I want to cry.... Those bastards don't go away easily. What do use for mealy bugs? Even 5 cycles of Neem + soap is not enough for them it seems.

@@NicoleDeanna damn mealybugs. I only had one plant get infested with them, a Paphiopedilum, and I couldn't get rid of them, they killed it. I think it got them from the Poinsettia I bought that year. I had them next to each other because the Paph had green and white blooms and the Poinsettia was red. Anyhoo, you could try Bayer 3 in 1 for the mealies. It works as both a contact and systemic treatment, so you hose the whole orchid and wet the media.
