Thanks for another great video Tessah. I’m a dinosaur who uses iron sights but this video is one of the best I’ve seen explaining red dots

For zeroing your pistol mounted optic, I've found that setting it so the dot appears directly above the front sight if the front and rear sights are lined up (I know this is referred to as co-witnessing, but that seems to draw a lot of push back right away). If that's aligned with the irons, you don't have to always shoot with the dot lined up after that with your irons. As long as the dot is on your target from another angle, even if you can't see your irons, it will hit. It will definitely get you close enough to minimize the amount of ammo ($) and time it takes you to get zeroed.

I went with the 2moa dot because when I turn up the brightness and my bad eyes starburst it - I get that perfect 6 moa blob

Modern Samurai Project was really helpful to refine my draw but I'm still working on speed. No longer punching out from low ready. Pushing out from almost eye level helped me not hunt for the dot.

Last month I went through a training course using a red dot for the first time, I immediately went and bought a new carry gun with an optic. What a difference that one change has made to my dry fire and live fire practice!

The 32 MOA open dot is fantastic. The brain naturally wants to center it on what is being shot, super fast. Quicker than trying to focus on a tiny 6 MOA dot. Work with it awhile, you’ll become a fan.👍

My favorite way to jumpstart zeroing a red dot is with a bore sight. Easy to get it pretty close while chilling in your apartment, and then go and confirm the zero at the range later. And with ammo prices, there's a decent chance that it will be cheaper as well XD

Very cool templates for explaining the sight picture and red dot. I've never seen those before; genius creation! And couldn't agree more for the need for Loctite on the threads.

I used the sig Romeo zero elite on my p365 xl SC for a while and genuinely liked it, except for the battery housing. One day, while at the range, it started sprinkling and a rain drop landed on the emitter. (Now THAT’S a good shot). That day I ordered the Hollowsun EPS Carry green dot 32 moa closed emitter. After a 3 or 4 month wait it arrived. I mounted directly on the pistol without a plate. I did need shorter screws than the ones that came with the dot. It was love at first shot! Thanks…

Excellent presentation. One tip on zeroing for new shooters is, you may want to have an experienced shooter confirm your zero. New shooters often have flaws in grip and trigger press that cause consistent low left impact from point of aim. If you zero to that flawed technique, you won't identify and correct the flaws, you'll lock them into muscle memory. It's good to know if variance in POI and POA are flinch, yank, dip, grip, issues so they can be corrected.

I recommend "zeroing" a red-dot optic with a bore sight laser. They're cheap. And they come in all calibers. And they work.

6 moa dot is great if you don’t have astigmatism. With astigmatism, your 2 moa dot becomes 6 or larger. But then again, it might be different for other people with astigmatism. I would suggest borrowing or renting before buying.

I support and talk a lot with David over at The Humble Marksman. There’s some science behind it, but another reason to think about a 6 MOA dot is that for some reason it seems to work better if you have to wear corrective lenses for your vision. I’ve got a 6 MOA dot on my Walther PDP/F and love it.

Thanks for the video. I just received my EPS carry from Optics Planet, ordered around Thanksgiving lol. Deals are not worth the wait sometimes haha. I went deep in the EPS and ordered 3 of each for my carries but also just received the vortex defender and I have to say that is one solid optic. Came with a ton of mounting screws and is quality for sure.

The Vortex Defender CCW that just came out also seems to be a good value and works on the RMSc footprint without requiring mondifications to the gun so you can mount a Holosun. Holosun fixed this with their EPS model that includes a plate that helps it fit on the Shield Plus and Hellcat models. Most everybody that has reviewed the Vortex Defender has liked them, and the only complaint seems to be the refresh rate on the led emitter. I have a 6 MOA version that I'm testing out now.

I like the Swampfox Sentinel with the Ironsides Shield mounted for an affordable but durable concealed carry option.

Good summary. I fall into the unfortunate case of having pretty bad astigmatism. So for me I like using something in that 2.5-3.5 MOA dot since a full 6 for me starbursts just a bit too much unless I'm using it on a carry gun.

Pretty hard to argue best bang for buck carry optic is the 407k, if you have astigmatism, you may find the 407k-GR to be the better dot as green dots do not cause as much star bursting. I have a 407c-GR on my competition gun, and a 407k red dot on my carry, there is a noticeable difference with star bursting.

Something else to consider, a red dot raises the overall height of the gun and is usually in line with the axis of the grip where the overall height counts. A good holster can compensate but you're still adding an inch or so of height, especially if you go with a fully enclosed optic.

I think i found my second favorite channel to watch. #1 is warrior poet society but this is good and you look good by the way.

Another great video. I’ve got roughly 25k through RDS handguns. Had an issue with a Sig optic (Romeo Zero), but zero issues w the multiple Holosun optics that I’ve run. I personally prefer green dots over red, and will always get it direct milled, when possible. That obviously has drawbacks all its own, but of that 25K, 10K is through a Glock 45 milled for a 507C, which has still held zero despite being a carry gun and being abused. By contrast, I’ve lost zero with a Walther w plates.

Great tips! What do you think is a more important feature for a 1st time rds purchase? Dot size or window size? I understand they aren't mutually exclusive.

Very good video. Having recently tried a few red dots on various guns (didn't shoot very well with them) I'm just starting to learn about them and am thinking about getting one for my new PDP and seeing if I can get good with it. One thing that I keep hearing about when watching optics videos are people talking about sights and "co-witnessing" with them. Can you please explain this to me, as people talk about it all the time but never say what it means.

Thanks for the informative video! I just purchased a sig p365x with the Romeo Zero Elite already mounted. I am finding that the dot “shape” is not exactly a circle, but sort of lopsided, if that makes sense. And I have to really train to keep both eyes open and on the target instead of the dot itself. A lot of training in my future, but that’s the fun part! If I were to do it all over again, I would buy the 365x without the Romeo and buy the holoson separately.

Really good advice here. Though I’ll never understand the “cycling of ammo”. It’s just not necessary.

Not a huge fan of red dots on pistols. But I'm coming around, I have a Glock 48 with the MOS and a Canik TP9 Elite Combat but the TP9 has amazing fiber optic sights I can drive nails with at 25 yards and can hit a man sized target at 50 yards pretty consistently. My EDC is a Taurus G3c. This gun don't get nowhere near the amount of praise it deserves. I got 229$ in the gun and it came with 3 mags. The mags are metal instead of polymer which I really like and I've fed that SOB all kinds of different ammo and she eats em all and spits em back out no problems. I have put 100s of rounds through my Taurus and ive not had a malfunction yet . If a red dot helps you shoot better then for sure get ya one but if your a good shot with iron sights I say save it money . Have a blessed day everyone 🙏🙏. Going red dot made me have to train shooting with my non-dominant eye. My right eye is my dominant eye, but has a horrible astigmatism. Now I get to shoot right hand left eye.

Vortex just dropped a new slim line Dot I haven’t seen one in person yet.

I had some issues with the refresh rate on the dot but other than that I’ve liked it a lot so far!

at first 6 moa sounds huge but for pistol distances of 25 or 12.5 yards that's 1.5 or 3/4 inches respectively, about the size of the X-ring on a target(size of a 22 hole at 10 feet). I made the mistake of putting an ACSS reticle dot on my pistol-talk about busy! Definitely need to change to a simple dot(I liked it for the huge 203moa outer circle).. I think most if not all holsters will allow a red dot?

I struggle with my optic because regardless of me wearing my contacts, glasses or not at all, my eyes don’t see a sharp dot for the reticle. I see a fuzzy blur that just distracts my sight picture. Considering just ditching my optic completely.

6:14 Try hard target focus and superimpose your dot onto your target, not staring at your dot. I found out I had astigmatism from my red dot too. You can try lowering your brightness to minimize starbursting but you'll need it to be bright enough for daylight. But tbh I just accepted that my dot looks like a 6 pointed star and as long as its on target, you can make do. One last thing, your eyes may be fatigued from all the time spent on screens or tired after work. Hope you find something that works for you.

Congratulations you found your perfect EDC gun. Now, your quest to find it's perfect holster, has just begun......

But have you checked out the "SeeAll" open sight? It peaks my interest and the reviews I have seen were positive but I would like to hear from a dedicated shooting channel (Also I love what you have done with your hair, I wish I still had long hair 😮‍💨)

On an open dot, Do not use a q-tip or do not wipe it when it’s dusty, You need to use compressed air (Not a high PSI) than you can use alcohol or a lens cleaner that is wet to very lightly wipe the glass and clean the emitter screen, when you are done make sure you use a very lite dot of oil on a q tip to make sure your mounting hardware doesn’t rust

Holosun actually makes the SCS which mounts to an MOS without a plate.

Holosun 507k is the best you will get for the money, The shield rms lenses are junk and the optics themselves aren’t rugged at all

My red dot sites always look like a star bursts, but I think it's just old bad eyes. I went to red dot sites because I can no longer see the front blades of iron sites, so the star bursts work for me anyway.

What do you prefer Holosun 507K or 407K? And why?

Just bought a Holosun EPS Carry red dot with a 2moa dot and unfortunately the dot on it is absolutely terrible. It's a dot at the lowest couple setting then gets massive and not even an actual dot past the 3rd or 4th setting. Very disappointing, gunna have to return it and possibly just sack up for a Trijicon unfortunately unless my local shop will let me take the sight out of the box to check the dot before leaving. Sad day :(

That's rather a dumb question. Of course you have to aim. But with lasers or iron sights, you don't have to spend time trying to find the red dot. If you're good enough to get your gun up and always see the dot right away, good for you.

My comment wasn’t intended to sound any kind of way, it just sounded like your aiming issue was only an issue with Holosons, and not all optics. It sounds like you’re not presenting your sights to alignment (regardless of sighting system). If that’s the case then an optic will be much more challenging to use. On the positive side though, if you get a chance to hone in that skill then your shooting will improve considerably across all sighting systems! Presenting your sights to alignment is quite achievable if you have a good instructor there to help you navigate it! 🙂
