Hamilton: An American Musical is a sung-and-rapped-through musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It tells the story of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. Miranda said he was inspired to write the musical after reading the 2004 biography Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow.
The show draws heavily from hip hop, as well as R&B, pop, soul, and traditional-style show tunes. It casts non-white actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures. Miranda described Hamilton as about "America then, as told by America now."
It's my first time listening to Hamilton and my first time listening to "Winter's Ball", "Helpless", and "Satisfied" (From "Hamilton")"

Apparently, the choreography for helpless/satisfied was some of the hardest in the show. The cast finished learning it and then got to the stage with the turntables and basically had to relearn it because the turntables made it even more complicated. Edit: Also, historically speaking, Hamilton and Angelica were very good friends and she was one of his political allies, but there probably wasn't anything romantic between them. Hamilton and John Laurens, on the other hand...

If I recall correctly, the idea of her being interested in him comes mostly from one letter where she says something about them possibly doing stuff. However, since no other letter's come anywhere near this idea, it's generally accepted that this was a joke and/or impacted by the fact she was pregnant when she wrote it.

I think Angelica's character actually displays some of the same themes we saw in "Surface Pressure" about how the older sibling ends up shouldering the burden. I've seen some jokes online about the idea of "eldest daughter syndrome," which stems from the storytelling trope that the firstborn girl takes on an almost maternal level of responsibility for her younger siblings, and is willing to make all these silent sacrifices for the sake of her family. I don't think this characterization exactly describes Angelica, but we do start to see the theme of her willingness to put her sister's happiness above her own.

I was SHOCKED when I found out Luisa wasn't the oldest. Her song hit me the most since I'm also the eldest and only girl on top of that and Luisa gave off pure Oldest Sister Energy. Satisfied hits me in a similar way, especially when she talks about loving her sister more than anything. I'd go to the ends of the earth for my little brothers 💖

@@naxurr8697 That makes sense too. But there are also cases of how the eldest are everyone's favorite when they have this 'perfect' persona. And then there's either the forgotten middle child, or the try-hard one to prove that they can be of the same level of great with the eldest. And the either spoiled, or not forgotten but no one cares about youngest.

Well this is just done for dramatic effect in the play, historically it did not happen this way. When Eliza and Hamilton met, Angelica was already married, had two children, and was living in London. They did have a flirtation in their letter to each other but that was it. Also, in the song she says her father had no sons, but there were (I think) 7 Schuyler children, several of them were boys. Plus, Angelica ran off to get married without her father’s approval.

I mean, there is a battle ocurring in "Satisfied", but not an external battle with Eliza. If Alexander had an internal battle even half as strong during either "Say No To This" or "Hurricane", Eliza would have grown old with her husband and seen her first son have kids, presumably. Instead, she went through shit that I would say makes her perfectly reasonable if she wanted to burn the entire city of Weehawken, NJ.

From an historical perspective, the first thing you should know is that there was no romantic feelings between Angelica and Alexander. He was taken with Eliza from the start. And yes, he did see her as a step up, too, but then that's not unusual for the period. Angelica was particularly astute when it came to politics (so was Eliza, though she tended to keep her head down when it came to the subject) and was outspoken, but she was just a friend to the man. Despite what the musical says, Angelica had older brothers. She was a middle child, not the older (there were, in fact, a grand total of fifteen Schuyler siblings, eight of whom survived into adulthood). In order, they were Philip, Rensselaer, Cornelia, Angelca, Catherine, John, Elizabeth ("Eliza"), and Margarita "Peggy" Schuyler. The idea that she couldn't have been with Hamilton because she had to "marry up" was not true, since her older brothers did just that. Now, the truth is she *did* marry up, but there would have been no objection to her marrying Hamilton. Its just that he was into Eliza and Angelica was never in his consideration as a marriage possibility. BTW, the events of these three songs take place over the course of about three years, starting around 1777 and ending in 1780. The American Revolution is going on full tilt in the background at this point, and will be going on strong for the next three years. Out of the "five young men" the only one that were at Hamilton's wedding was John Laurens and Gilbert du Motier (that is, Lafayette). Hercules Mulligan and Aaron Burr hadn't been invited. Oh, and the "feral Tom cat" story is an urban legend. Martha Washington didn't actually do it.

As well as Angelica actually already being married with children when she most likely met Hamilton. At the time, marriage into a family meant you saw your in-laws as family which is why letters can appear romantic simply because they were a lot more informal than other letters of the time. Of course, this means that authors take advantage of this a lot in fictionalised stories based on actual history (which makes sense from a storytelling point of view).

Satisfied is one of my favorite songs and performances in this musical, it's unreal, Reneé Elise GoldsBerry as Angelica is truly astounding. This is one of the songs that I connect to the most, because there's always something about unrequited love, or love that is not meant to be that hurts me and the best way possible. A pleasurable kind of ache. Love is an act of giving and letting go, which is what Angelica does. She gives her sister what she wants, and let's the one she loves go. A wonderful piece of art.

I was waiting to see your reaction to Satisfied and it DID NOT disappoint 👏 I remember the first time I watched this my mind was blown with the revolving stage and the way the actors were rewinding Helpless IRL XD plus the musical number itself is fantastic and it’s still in my top 3 favorite Hamilton songs. After my second rewatch I realized that they were actually rewinding everything! Like every bit of choreography since A Winter’s Ball. When Burr is singing if you could marry a sister you’re rich son, in the background we see Hamilton going up to Angelica and kissing her hand. Which then they show the details of that meeting in Satisfied. I completely missed that scene in A Winter’s Ball the first time and when I caught it I was like: no freaking way XD Also a little bit of a fun fact, according to the cast the choreography from Helpless was the most difficult one to do. So you can just imagine what their reaction was when they told them: okay so you know how Helpless has the most difficult choreography? Okay so now I want you all to do the same thing all over again…but in reverse! 😂

By the time you get to the end of the play, you feel the full weight of how unprecedented Hamilton is as a work of art. I've been a musical theater geek for 50 years and this blows me away. One thing to keep in mind is Phillip Schuyler ( the dad) was one of the original Major Generals of the army. Really underrated in my view because he was a much better admin guy than field general. But it was HIS strategy that defeated the British at Saratoga. Horatio Gates swept in at the last minute to steal the glory

If your interested in more Oversimplified, I would suggest checking out their video "The War of the Bucket", it goes in-depth with the complicated politics of the Holy Roman Empire, and the power struggles between the Emperor and Pope, but with all that awesome Oversimplified humor. I'm also gonna suggest the band Sabaton again, as I would highly suggest checking them out, with their songs like "Screaming Eagles", "Stormtroopers", and "Race to the Sea" being some of my favorites. (also great content, keep up the great work!).

Satisfied is probably one of the most powerful songs in the show, because like My Shot it does show up for some small segments later, and oh boy does it come back strong. If I had to rate how hard each time hearing it throughout the musical is, this one feels the weakest, at least to me. That's saying a lot, because this song is pretty much a musical masterpiece fueled with emotions. Those emotions only hit you harder the further into the musical you get. Anyways, next up should be Story of Tonight(Reprised) and Wait For It. Then the video after that is looking to be a weird one cuz you're basically entering into the climax stages of act 1, and every song basically flows as one tightly knit series of events. You could probably get away with doing two four song videos, then cap off act one with a single song reaction to the Act One finale. That or you could do 4 songs, then 3, and then cap off Act 1 with a 2 song reaction. I dunno, but either way, Hamilton Week going strong. If you think you're addicted now, just wait.

  • @katesullivan4707

I've done this in my head before, so this is helpful to get them out, Act 1 is easier to break into pieces than Act 2. Story of Tonight Reprise and Wait for It Stay Alive and Ten Duel Commandments and you could do That Would Be Enough too, or you could start the next one with it. Guns & Ships (make sure you have the closed captioning) History....and then Yorktown where you think you are done but aren't, What Comes Next The Dear Theodosia and Non Stop, that one you will have trouble clearing with KZread. Then, I think What'd I Miss can be on its own because its awesome and you will have some questions. That's enough for now, I presume people will catch if I missed any.

For the next video few videos I recommend doing two songs per video 1st video: The Story of Tonight (Reprise) and Wait For It 2nd video: Stay Alive/Ten Dual Commandments 3rd video: Meet Me Inside/That Would Be Enough All these songs flow into each other and I think this is the best way to smoothly break them up without watching them all grouped together!

I just need to send some love to Philippa Soo because she sings Helpless SO BEAUTIFULLY, it's my fave songs to listen by itself when I'm not jamming to the whole Musical album. Also, you wondering what is going to went down in the rest if act 1 and act 2... I'm just going to say you definetly should buckle up 🤭 As for the next songs, "The story of tonight (reprise)" and "Wait for it" should really go together. Can't wait for the next Hamilton day!

Ok, when I sing the rap part in this song, or in any song for that matter, I take a small breath if there is a big enough gap between lines. Like “It’s a dream, and it’s a bit of a dance *small breath in* A bit of a posture it’s a bit of a stance *small breath in*”. That’s how I do it, but idk about how they do it onstage. 19:16 Here you can see her leaning backwards near the ends of her lines, something you tend to involuntarily do when you’re singing without enough breath, so the answer to your question of “where is she breathing” she’s not. Same with My Shot, Lin wrote very little breaths into the song so these two are very difficult to perform Angelica’s actor (blanking on the name) is incredibly talented, you’ll rarely ever hear anything less than amazing with her, not to mention the amazing rapping *and* singing

As I watch the reaction, and YoBGS comments on the stage in Heless, I smile because one of My fave is in the next song "Satisfied." If you look closely there are multiple circles that spin within the structure. We saw it in "The Skyler Sisters." The whole musical is beyond beautifully done . . . Some of the music is reused and as I think about when they do so it kind of reminds me of the narrative of the musical. I mean from the beginning it was a spoiler alert. A prime example is when the antagonistic says, "I'm the d@#% fool that shot him." Theter, when done right, can invite you along for the journey . . . (I can't remember what clip it was in and I have to rewatch the musical) but a comment was made about when the revolutionaries were shooting weapons but didn't have the weapons and the British were coming (lol) and it was commented in the clip why didn't have it. I know when the 70th Tony Awards was going on around the time there had been shootings going on and one of the numbers question had guns that were to be used, they almost canceled the number, but instead mimicked the people using guns. I believe that was an awesome choice. They were considerate of what was going on in the world at the time which was AMAZING! The power of the imagination is a powerful thing too, plus usually the closer you get props to looking real they can get heavy, and if they are transported they could have gotten damaged (I know that the 1st reason is true, but the rest is speculation)

Here’s my advice on how you should listen to the next couple of songs in the soundtrack: The Story of Tonight (reprise), and Wait for it, together And Stay Alive, Ten Duel Commandments, and Meet me Inside together and That would be enough, by itself (its a lot to take in) You could also listen to That would be enough in the same video as the previous three, but it would be a pretty long video Edit: actually you’ll probably have to get used to listening to 4 songs in one video. You could listen to That would be enough by itself, but the four next songs (Guns and Ships, History…, Yorktown, and What comes next?) together because it all kind of flows together Afterwards you should listen to Dear Theodosia+ Laurens interlude together. Even though Laurens interlude isn’t technically on the soundtrack, it’s an important point in the storyline Non-stop should be listened to by itself, because honestly it’s amazing That’s it for Act 1 :D
