    Fun fact...Renee (Angelica) was sent and learned the song Satisfied in one night. The next day she auditioned for Lin. He instantly hired her, stating that he didn’t need to hear anyone else. She was his Angelica. And apparently, Renee never messed up during a performance. I have no idea how she did it. This is a hard song.

Helpless is supposed to be a nod to Beyoncé and music like that and the growl in Hamilton’s voice at the end of Helpless is a nod to Ja Rule. So many Easter eggs throughout Hamilton!

    Lin-Manuel Miranda took a lot of creative liberties in the story telling, particularly with the personal stories in Hamilton. It isn't a documentary, after all, but a work of art based on true events. In real life, Angelica was already married when she met Hamilton and although they clearly (from surviving writings) had a strong intellectual attraction to each other and a flirty relationship in the correspondence, there is no concrete evidence that they ever had an affair and historians have speculated in both directions (yes, an affair; possibly not) for many years. Alexander and Eliza married in 1780 and Angelica and her husband lived in Europe (first France, then England) for 16 years starting in 1783. Angelica leaving to live in London is brought up in a lyric in the show. Although Angelica made some visits back to the USA during her years living aboard, she clearly wasn't physically around Hamilton for most of those 16 years. Also, another element of the story telling that is done and not true, the Schuyler family had boys as well as girls. Actually, they had 15 children total but only 8 lived to adulthood and this included boys. However, Angelica, Eliza (given name Elizabeth), and Peggy (given name Margarita) were the oldest of the children. The rewind to re-tell the story from Angelica's perspective is extremely well done, I'm glad you appreciated it so much. Also, you are correct, the turntable does go in the opposite direction during the rewind and allows the choreography to be reversed to get back to the point where they re-start the story telling. You may not have noticed yet, but the turntable is actually a double one. There is a center section then a ring one around it. They can be controlled separately so the middle one may be stationary while the ring turns (in whichever direction is chosen) or the center can turn without the ring turning or they can turn in opposite directions from each other. Glad you did these together and appreciated the staging of it. Satisfied, in particular, can not be fully appreciated without seeing what is happening on stage, I believe.

    I like to think of Miranda and Chernow working together... The Chernow biography tells us the facts and what Hamilton did, and Miranda tells us who Hamilton was. Not exactly factual, but a good idea of who he was as a person.

  • @jeancaldwell5391

    @jeancaldwell5391

    @@WanderLost They did in fact work together. Ron Chernow became the historian for the musical. He and Lin discussed many aspects of the story as it Lin was working on it. Some facts, obviously, Lin took artist license with. Sometimes timelines were altered, sometimes historical facts were fudged or squished together. Ron has commented, and demonstrated, that he knows virtually every line in the musical from watching it in its creative state so often.

    It is a stroke of genius how much of this musical manages to be extremely ambiguous. Like "his life will be fine now that Eliza is in it"... ok, but by this point he might be talking about love or about now having money because he married rich. The play often toys with just how much of a selfish trickster Hamilton might have been any any point, from 0% to 110% and it takes absolute mastery of lyricism to create a whole play overflowing with ambiguous lines and overshadowing as Hamilton!

    On the point of being based off of real events, this particular event did not happen this way in real life. In real life, Angelica had already been married and eloped with her husband to London. However, she and Alexander became good friends and she even joked with Eliza that if Eliza were like the Romans, she'd be generous and share Alexander with Angelica. The relationship was something like an office spouse, I suppose. Angelica was an intelligent, politics-wise woman Alex could bounce ideas around with. In the play, Angelica is not married at this point, and the relationship seems more ambiguous. However, we see her place family duties and Eliza's happiness above her personal wishes. Lin Manuel Miranda is aware of the historical inaccuracies but wanted to give depth to Angelica's character. (But on the point of there being no Schuyler brothers, he just forgot. Philip Schuyler did have sons in real life.) The stagecraft for this is so good as well! As you noticed and some people have mentioned, Satisfied replays the choreography of A Winter's Ball and Helpless. When rewatching the songs, you can see how they line up, like: -The shouted "Ladies!" from A Winter's Ball muffled in Satisfied -Alex stopping Lafayette and talking to Angelica himself -Angelica dancing with Washington -The replayed conversation (the most obvious, I think) -Angelica taking Alex's letters -Peggy dancing on the left (my personal favorite part lol) -Then they replay some choreo from the beginning of Satisfied, bringing the song full circle This is by no means a comprehensive list, just my personal favorites that I wanted to share. I highly suggest rewatching the songs on your own and matching them up!

    I do believe some historians thought they were some feelings between one another though nothing was acted upon. I think this is even referenced later when Angelica sings you wrote, "My Dearest, Angelica" rather than "My Dearest Angelica," which the first denote feelings of romantic love rather than platonic. I've seen this debate from different letters during the time period with other historical persons who would write things out of keeping of the time period towards their supposed platonic friendship that would usually be considered romantic.

    Also, the direction that the stage rotates is significant as well, with one direction noting going forward in time, and the other (as seen in Satisfied) means going backwards in time. It works in terms of the dramatic tension in the musical, on many levels, but it would have been strengthened if they hadn't had to cut the reprise from the second act due to time. But yes, she wasn't the oldest child, and there were sons, and she was already married when she met Hamilton, and Hamilton met Eliza at a dinner party . . . but it's not intended to be a full and faithful and exhaustive biography of Hamilton. And there was a TON of sexual and intellectual tension between the two in real life - the whole comma thing in the second act? Yeah, that was real.

    Angelica was indeed the "socialite," and was also the "looker" among the sisters (Google the actual Schuyler sisters, and view images --- you'll see!). Eliza was very plain, and more of an introvert, like "Hamilton" depicts. So, yes, Angelica had a close bond with Hamilton, as well as Thomas Jefferson, but since she was already married when she met Hamilton, there's no proof that an affair transpired with any of the powerful men with whom she was closely acquainted. Lin Manuel Miranda admittedly took creative liberties with the retelling of this story, and from a dramatic standpoint, the creative liberties taken were absolutely brilliant.

    Ok. Nod to historical accuracy: In real life, Angelica was married to Mr. Church before any of the Schyluer sisters met Hamilton (They actually eloped. He was a ne'er do well. It was a big scandel.) Angelica and Hamilton met at Eliza and Hamilton's wedding. Angelica and Hamilton became friends and were intellectual equals so she kind of became an advisor to him. She was also friends with Jefferson so she ran interference for Hamilton in a lot of his constant conflicts with Jefferson. She also advised Hamilton on the best way to convince and persuade Jefferson to do what Hamilton wanted Jefferson to do. (This is alluded to in a later song but not fully explained.) There is no historical record that Hamilton and Angelica were ever more than friends or even wanted to be. Lin-Manuel Miranda has always been very upfront about that. He said that he knew the romance was inaccurate but that he wanted to include it for dynamic and depth. ANOTHER historical tidbit: the "tomcat" reference is absolutely NOT true. As a matter of fact, the use of "tomcat" to mean "player" did not become part of the vernacular until almost 100 years after Hamilton's death. The line is a reference to a letter to the editor written 15 years as after Hamilton died when someone who was trying to overturn one of Hamilton's financial programs, mentioned a letter he swore Martha Washington wrote about Hamilton in which, according to Hamilton's detractor, Martha Washington compared Hamilton to a stray cat. Given the close relationship between the Hamiltons and the Washingtons, it is highly unlikely any such thing was ever expressed by Martha Washington....OK. Rant over.

    Satisfied was initially the one song that made me doubt Hamilton as a good show when I first watched it because it felt like they were adding an adultery plot in which I really don’t enjoy. Especially since historically, Angelica was already married when they first met. Also an affair between Alexander and Angelica was never proven and argued both ways as although they sometimes had a flirty undertone to their letters, she was more an older sister and confidante to him in his political ventures. So it felt a lot like adding drama for the sake of drama. But it’s pretty hard to resist Renee Elise Goldsberry’s voice tho and I eventually came to love the song for other reasons, one of which is how badass she delivered those rap lines and high tones. Also, everyone can admit that the choreography from Winter’s Ball through Satisfied is genius because of the “rewind part” as you pointed out and the “recreation” of the choreography from a different perspective. All of the cast said that this was the hardest song in terms of choreography because they just had to come off of the complexity of Hopeless and then were told “Okay, now do it all again in reverse”. The way they play with the turning table was also clever in that during Hopeless, it spins clockwise as time moves forward, while from the rewind, it spins counterclockwise as though time was going back.

    If anything, Angelica may have, or may have not, had an incident with Thomas Jefferson.

    I hear you on the worry about the unnecessary adultery. No spoilers, but I think this moment shows how much Angelica loved Eliza and sacrificed her happiness for her sister. Which is useful further in. And, of course, introduces the theme of Alexander being never satisfied.

    As a piece of tension that kept Angelica's character relevant, it makes for a super complex character and a great story-telling line. It would have felt more convincing if they'd kept the Satisfied reprise in the second act, where she tells him off for cheating on Eliza - but it had to be cut for time. And it was more than a flirty undertone - she had a flirty undertone with Jefferson. It will never be proven, but the chemistry and bonds were totally there. In the letters we still have and the eyewitness accounts of them at the time. They may never have crossed the line (or they may have, who knows) but they definitely had a significant and deep connection.

    Angelica being in love with AH was made up for the play. IRL she was already engaged to be married when they first met and the girls had two older brothers so she didn’t have to marry for wealth but she actually did marry a wealthy prominent man I believe.

    She was already married - she had eloped with John Church well before she ever met Hamilton.

    I love satisfied but my one complaint is Angelica didn't have feelings for Hamilton and Hamilton didn't have feelings for her
