Queen Ranavalona I (1778-1861) ruled the Merina Kingdom of Madagascar from 1828-1861. A proud nationalist, she was a ruler to be feared. Upon the death of her husband, King Radama, she took control of the kingdom, consolidated control over the entire island, and executed all of her political rivals. She is remembered non only for her heavy handed tactics, but also for her efforts to keep her kingdom safe from colonization.
