Ham And Root Veg Soup - Flung Together Food Feb - Love Food Hate Waste - British Cook

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

#Ad I love reducing waste, so I’ve partnered with Love Food Hate Waste to share my Hearty Ham and Root Veg Soup Recipe for the Flung Together Food Feb Challenge. I’m taking part to share cooking tips and reduce our waste for #flungtogetherfood and I challenge you to take part too. This kind of cooking, using what we have, what is around us, is so much fun and is much kinder to the environment.
Hearty Ham and Root Veg Recipe:
The best thing about this recipe is being able to use all sorts of root veg or pulses to make a fun family friendly, healthy and sustainable high fibre soup. You can swap in all sorts of veg and use what you have, you can also try making it with ham stock cubes and a bit of bacon if you
Ingredients:
1 x ham gammon -1kg -1.5kg ( for roasting after) or 2 x Pork Stock cubes and 150g diced and fried bacon.
200g of Onion (Including skin)
200g of Carrot or Other root veg ( scrub and cook with skin on)
200g of Potatoes (I use left over roasted or boiled potatoes)
200g Split Yellow Pea’s or other dried pulses
1.5l of water, or enough to cover the ham.
Parsley (or any other herbs you have)
Salt and Pepper to season at the end.
Method:
Place the ham into a large saucepan. Fill pan with cold water so the top of the ham is covered. (If using stock cubes and diced and fried bacon just make stock with 1.5l of water)
Chop onion and carrots (or root veg) into quarters, place into pan with onion skin.
Put parsley into pan, bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer.
Simmer for around 20 minutes, add the dried pulses and potato.
At about 45 minutes, remove the ham from the pot, put the oven on, removed rind and score ham- brush with honey and mustard and roast ham at 180c for around a further 35 minutes to make some delicious honey roast ham.
Continue to cook the soup for the same amount of time (35 mins) while ham is roasting in oven.
Pour juices of roasted ham into soup, carefully blend soup, then add chunks of roasted ham and garnish with parsley before serving. Enjoy.

Yaya, glad to see you on KZread again Drew. I love making a throw together meal every once in a while and I never waste food. Growing up in the Caribbean, food has always been expensive so we could never waste anything! One of my favourite soups is made using the hambone from the Christmas ham..super tasty. Can't wait to see more exciting dishes from you 💜💜💜💜

This is a great idea, Drew. Thank you for sharing. I have a couple pounds of lentils which have been sitting in the cupboard for a long time. I am going to check the price of ham today when I run to the grocery store. If it's not to expensive, I will give this soup a go, otherwise it has to wait until next paycheck.

So in this recipe I was using the bit of ham to make a stock, I then roast the ham in the oven to finish it off. I tend to have a meal with the roasted ham, some parsley sauce and some fried potato. I have some of the ham the next day in sandwiches and add more to the soup as I serve it. I freeze portions of the soup as it makes a lot. I also cube the ham and use it in omelettes, frittatas, sometimes in a stir fry or to add to a stew. Cooking this way really does make the most of the ham and it makes a lot. Give it a try.
