Halogen Exception - Deactivating Ortho Para Directing EAS video 13 by Leah Fisch
leah4sci.com/EAS Presents: Halogen directing effects, and exception to the ortho/para activating rule.
Struggling with Orgo? Grab my free ebook '10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry' leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
Video 13 of my EAS series helps you understand the unique directing effects of halogens on substituted benzene. Learn why they are ortho para directing yet still deactivate the benzene ring towards electrophilic aromatic substitution.

Awww, thanks! So glad the resources helped and I wear the title of GOAT with pride :)
I was on vacation for a week so I missed the whole chapter, but after binging the 13 video series on 2x speed I caught up in a half hour. You helped me get an A in Orgo 1, Orgo 2 here we come!

Thanks for your kind words, and I'm still at it!
thank you! you are a god-sent for all the students...can I know if you have any videos about synthesis of polysubstituted benzene?? I don't know how we can choose the compositions to get the final compostion... thank you keep your awesome work 😍😍😍

are you referring to EAS or something else? If EAS see leah4sci.com/electrophilic-aromatic-substitution-mechanisms-and-reactions/ if something else then no.
its 2023 ,I'm writing on Monday and this series helped me ALOOT!

Hi could you explain to me why fluorine in fluorobenzene is a better electron donating group by resonance than chlorine in chlorobenzene? Thanks so much for the video it was super helpful!

I'm sorry, but I don't offer tutoring over social media . For help with questions like this and more, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall. Details: leah4sci.com/join or contact me through my website leah4sci.com/contact/
In the resonance intermediate for the bonus structure, where does the third Pi bond go? It seems to disappear from the ring (4:12)
@Leah4sci
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it does appear that way. However, the pi electrons resonate onto the electrophile. Since I used a generic “E” in this example and since we also don’t know what the initial charge of that “E” is, you don’t see me expressing the addition of those electrons with any change in charge. (It should become more negative, regardless.) Sorry for the confusion!
What will happen if a CCl3 will be attached to the benzene ring? It is a meta directing

You tell me, what is the charge or partial charge of carbon given the 3 electron withdrawing halogens attached to it?
Hello,Leah Can you please tell if this is true for all the halogens the same way?
@Leah4sci
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this exception will apply to all halogens.
Do you happen to know what fluoxetine does to the human brain or thyroid glad? You seem really smart and I have been taking fluoxetine for anxiety but I don’t want fluoride in my body….

@@Leah4sci okay so then do you know how fluoride interacts with iodine outside of the human body? They are both halogens so that’s why I thought you might know
thank you so much ;a; such big help!!!!

why is a halogen deactivating in the first place?
@Leah4sci
Жыл бұрын
Halogens are electron donating groups, but they're so unhappy to be so that they intentionally slow down the reaction, making the halogen a deactivator. For help with questions like this and more, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall. Details: leah4sci.com/join or contact me through my website leah4sci.com/contact/
