Halogen Exception - Deactivating Ortho Para Directing EAS video 13 by Leah Fisch

leah4sci.com/EAS Presents: Halogen directing effects, and exception to the ortho/para activating rule.
Struggling with Orgo? Grab my free ebook '10 Secrets To Acing Organic Chemistry' leah4sci.com/orgo-ebook/
Video 13 of my EAS series helps you understand the unique directing effects of halogens on substituted benzene. Learn why they are ortho para directing yet still deactivate the benzene ring towards electrophilic aromatic substitution.

    are you referring to EAS or something else? If EAS see leah4sci.com/electrophilic-aromatic-substitution-mechanisms-and-reactions/ if something else then no.

    In the resonance intermediate for the bonus structure, where does the third Pi bond go? It seems to disappear from the ring (4:12)

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it does appear that way. However, the pi electrons resonate onto the electrophile. Since I used a generic “E” in this example and since we also don’t know what the initial charge of that “E” is, you don’t see me expressing the addition of those electrons with any change in charge. (It should become more negative, regardless.) Sorry for the confusion!

    why is a halogen deactivating in the first place?

  • @Leah4sci

    @Leah4sci

    Жыл бұрын

    Halogens are electron donating groups, but they're so unhappy to be so that they intentionally slow down the reaction, making the halogen a deactivator. For help with questions like this and more, I recommend joining the organic chemistry study hall. Details: leah4sci.com/join or contact me through my website leah4sci.com/contact/
