5:22 "they just had so many attention to detail" - I always really dug the drums in this song. They never got flashy or anything, but there's so many tasteful little changes that occur in each section of the song that really help to build and ramp up the song as it progresses. Then one day I found out the drummer was the legendary Bernard Purdie and it all made sense.

Daryl is the tenor, and Oates is the baritone (lower). As the band went forward, Hall was heard more and more prominently. You have to check out the "Live at Daryl's House" videos... he started as a web show - inviting all kinds of artists to his home in NY to do a jam of both Hall&Oates songs and the guest's songs... with Daryl's great band. it became a syndicated show in the early 2010's and I think he stopped around 2014. Awesome pairings - archive type stuff!

That seemed a shorter version of the song than I am used to, in that it didn't reach the second monumental build. But anyway, as an aside, I have been watching Brad & Lex's Vlog and would encourage others to take a look. When I first encountered this reaction channel it seemed to me that Lex is a genius with a gift for unusual similes. Having watched the Vlog I now realise that Brad is the rock upon which Lex's magic fairy dances and that makes watching them as a couple all the more rewarding. A perfect match of solidity and wonder. Other Hall & Oates I'd suggest is Rich Girl. And oh, yeah...more of The Clash...try Straight to Hell.

There's a longer version of this song on the album, Abandoned Luncheonette. You're listening to the single/radio edit. It's a 51 year old tune as of 2024. Time flies! I was 4 in 1973, so it doesn't quite feel like it was yesterday, but sometimes I still think 1985 was only 20 years ago. I remember hearing this on the radio as a little girl, and my mom sold The Tavares' cover version out of her soul music record shop.

Daryl Franklin Hohl (born in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, on October 11, 1946)[12] and John William Oates (born in New York City on April 7, 1948)[13] first met at the Adelphi Ballroom in Philadelphia in 1967. At the time they met, each was heading his own musical group, Hall with The Temptones and Oates with The Masters. They were there for a band competition when gunfire rang out between two rival gangs, and in trying to escape, they ran to the same service elevator. On further discovering that they were interested in the same music and that both were attending Philadelphia's Temple University, they started spending time together on a regular basis and eventually shared a number of apartments in the city.[14] One of the apartments they shared had "Hall & Oates" on the mailbox, which became the duo's common nickname.[15] It took them another two years to form a musical duo, and three years after that, they signed to Atlantic Records and released their debut album

The extended version of this song had more saxophone in the middle of it. Check out their other songs that people mentioned. Their song One on One is another smooth song of theirs.

I wore white lines into my copy of that song. Back in the vinyl days, if you played a record often enough, you could literally wear the music out of the grooves. I had to buy another copy of it. It came right at that point in my own life.

This was the 45rpm radio cut. The album version has a longer fade and more soaring vocals at the end, and bit more instrumental bits between the verses.

Darryl Hall is the tall blonde slim one...John Oates is the deeper voice dark hair one. Darryl did most of the lead singing...an amazing voice. Definitely showcased on "Sara Smile". Yes there is a definite Hall & Oates vibe...it`s "Smooth blue-eyed soul". And, Brad it`s cool to be "rough around the edges"...but, there`s no shame in letting some of this nice slow smooth music break down that "tough wall" you put up. Enjoy the music, smile...and when a cool nice song like "She`s Gone" or "Sara Smile"...or Steve Perry`s "Foolish Heart" comes on, it`s cool to reach over and give Lex a hug. You will still be a tough guy...but, with a warm heart. :) Steve Perry-"Foolish Heart" give it a try.

So...these guys were at their record producers in the same building, but didn't know each other...both were having a hard time signing on and making it big... I think Hall had just left his meeting heading down the corridor to the elevator trying to work out what to do next...he hits the button for the elevator, door opens, there is Oats...history made.
