Michael McDonald's voice was everywhere in the late 70's through the 80's. Either singing his own tunes or backing dozens of other bands and singers (Doobies, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, etc). Definitely one of the most in demand singers of all time. Early 80's had tons of great soft rock/or R&B hits. Check out George Benson's "Turn Your Love Around"

I love ALL of the suggestions you listed. Well, I guess you didn't specifically suggest them all, but Thee Doobies, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross and George Benson are all stand-outs for the most satisfying music with the perfect vibe. They all stand the test of time and stay in my regular rotation. Music at its best!!

This song was sampled by Warren G & Nate Dogg in 1994. On this track Michael McDonald is accompanied by one of the greatest Rythm sections in the history of Music. Jeff Porcaro Drums, Louis Johnson Bass, Steve Lukather Guitar and Greg Phillinganes on clavinet. The sound is pure Westcoast Sound.

He is also in the background vocals of about a million songs, plus there is a hilarious Family Guy skit where Peter wins the lottery and hires Michael McDonald to follow him around and sing background vocals to everything Peter says. It's pretty fabulous.

Did 2 deployments back-to-back !!! She left me after I told her about the 2nd deployment.Very sad time for me at that time. SEMPER-FI.

Michael McDonald was a smooth cat back in the 70s and 80s. I always had time to listen to him whenever his voice graced the airwaves. If you guys like soundtracks his crooning of ‘Sweet Freedom’ on the ‘Running Scared’ movie soundtrack is a good listen as well. Definitely a good time vibe! 👍

I keep forgetting we’re not in love anymore. She broke up with him, obviously something he didn’t want because he still in love with her, so he hast to remind himself that they’re not in love. Something he’s not used to he’s used to being in love. He’s obviously having a hard time with this Situation. Breaking up and all the heart ache that come along with it, if you are on the end of not wanting to do it. Great songwriter! Great voice! Amazing musician, usually playing keys while singing. Let’s hear more of Michael McDonald. Great show today thanks

Soft Rock was mostly a 70s-early 90s thing, and can come from a few different directions. Some was centered around acoustic guitars and gentle vocals, such as James Taylor, America, The Eagles' lighter material. Some was Yacht rock, like Peter Cetera or Christopher Cross, which featured keyboards and usually clean electric guitar, and some was "blue eyed soul", basically being white R&B. Even legit R&B would be considered soft rock, like The Commodores.

@@stanflahaut1893 I get that though. I really like The Eagles a lot, but I'm a die-hard metalhead. I think it's healthy to appreciate that sort of variety. Imagine if we ate food by genre! Like, "Damn, I didn't know you like pizza, I thought you just liked Mexican food" 😀

It IS R&B. Michael McDonald does all of it, soft rock/R&B/pop/soul/funk, but he definitely leans R&B, stylisticially and vocally. He's an icon in the R&B world, and has done duos with pretty much all of the greats, including John Ingram, Toni Braxton, Aretha Franklin, Patti Labelle, etc. He's definitely more R&B than rock, so your ear is working right. 😛 The Doobie Brothers first lead singer is more soft rock. Michael definitely brought the R&B/soul flair to the Doobies. I was convinced the first words out of your mouth after the initial surprise of hearing this song was gonna be, "OH! This is where that sample is from!" But I guess y'all haven't heard Warren G's "Regulate" before. Or you have but forgot. You definitely gotta hear it now. It was on the radio probably around the time you were little kids, so it makes sense if you haven't heard it yet. It's so rare that people hear these songs in that sequence. lol Both classics. Edit: Kenny Rogers, the country singer?! lol! Cuz he's white, and has a white beard? That's the only similarity I see. Lex cracks me up. 😆

In this episode of Brad & Lex, Lex ponders all she was told about soft rock before Mr McDonald's iconic vocal prowess leads them into the smooth and soothing groove. As Brad comfortably loosens his bolts, easing into his signature "side to side sway", Lex checks to see if the coast is clear like a deserted island, leans back and then forward to display a confident, respectable frontal "bop" as if to say I hear you Michael before making an incredible comparison to............Kenny Rogers? "Bops" and sways proceed until the music fades out and a discussion on the 1982 track fades in.
