Halibut & Dungeness Crab | San Francisco Bay Area Fishing Trip
Спорт
Epic day on the water. Launched at Berkeley Marina, drove out past the Golden Gate Bridge into the Pacific Ocean to drop crab pots for Dungeness Crab. While they soaked we went fishing at Angel Island for Halibut but only caught a rock fish. We quickly went to Paradise Cove area to pick up two halibut. Next we went back to the ocean near Point Bonita for rock fish. We used live smelt the whole day for bait. In the ocean I put the underwater GoFish Cam camera and got some cool footage of lingcod. After 30 minutes we picked up the crab pots and found lots of nice jumbo Dungeness Crab.
Thanks for checking out this video, please subscribe if you have not already I really appreciate it.

First the snag, would have been great if you had the tag end and were able to pull up a good pot? As long as you didn't lose the camera! I always like to see the underwater footage, it shows how the fish bite and that's a big help. Thanks for the vid, I'm going nuts up here in the hills!!

Great videos! Been watching for awhile now. Just curious where do you buy your round crab pots from? I crab a lot on the central Oregon coast and the round pots you use look like high quality pots.
Hey, random question for you - is there any Dungeness upstream of the Carquinez Bridge? Is it worth trying? I'm in the Sacramento area and looking for possibilities closer to home. I'll likely head out past the GG Bridge like you did sometime... I'm glad to see that you don't have to go too far out for results, although I do have the range to (theoretically) hit the Farallon Islands. I'm still very much getting the feel for things in this area.
@ChrisPfish2

you can only keep dungeness crab caught in the ocean, not the bay, so it needs to be outside the GGB. They like salty water too. Thanks for watching and good question.
@gfrerking
3 жыл бұрын
@@ChrisPfish2 Thanks for the quick reply! I'm not sure if it's new/different since I've been away from CA for a long time (I was born in Concord)... but by my read, the Fish & Game regs ban Dungeness specifically in SF and San Pablo Bay. The Carquinez Bridge is mentioned as a boundary... that's why I asked. You're right about the salty water though... it might not be salty enough. IDK? Maybe a good experiment for you? Check it out!
Thank you for the attachments. What in the attachments tells you the tide will be slower? Very educational videos!
@ChrisPfish2
4 жыл бұрын
Happy you enjoyed it, thanks for checking out my videos! Good question, you can tell the tide is slower by subtracting low tide from high tide and dividing by how many hours. So if low is 1, high is 4 over 6 hours you got half(0.5) a foot of water moving in a hour, thats slow. fast is low 0, high 6 in 6 hours. 1 foot per hour. The graph in the pic illustrates it as well, the black line doesn't move up as high on the chart. Current is faster when more water is moving. hope that helps?
@hikiula

@@ChrisPfish2 It helps! What is the fastest tide or current (?) you would go out fishing for Halibut? Thank you for the education.

I use a small black cotton thread to tell if the trap has been opened. Poachers don't notice it as it breaks easily and It rots quicker than the rot cord in case the pot is lost.
