I am terrified and excited about the thematic implications of this next album. So far, things feel like they're paralleling Vector quite nicely. Assuming you're not up to date with the story of Vector, the short of it is that it's describing the rebirth of the Cockroach King. The whole album follows an unnamed character who's being tortured by the very people whom he put his own life in the hands of in hopes that they could help rid him of his sinister alter ego. They electrocute him, deprive him of food, and subject him to some of the most diabolical mental and biological experimentation in human history until he reaches a breaking point and loses his will to live (The Good Doctor, Nil by Mouth). It is here that he turns to the very alter ego he sought destroyed for his salvation (Host). By the end of A Cell Divides, this alter ego has surfaced, claiming his host's body as his own. He kept his promise; he took away the pain inside. But it came at the ultimate price. The ego had won; the Cockroach King had returned. Obviously it's too soon to develop a concrete thesis on Virus's story, but given what we have so far in addition to the visuals from the music videos, I do have a couple of thoughts. The one that seems most feasible to me thus far is that the Cockroach King has risen against the Good Doctor and given him a taste of his own medicine (Prosthetic), and has now launched a campaign to reclaim the throne that was taken from him on that mountain years ago, spreading the influence of his rule far and wide. Like a Virus. I love this band and everything they do. They're approach to narrative story-telling, not just across songs or even albums, but their entire discography, has always fascinated me. I always loved Cockroach King as a song, but thematically, it always felt out of place compared to the other tracks on The Mountain. It feels like now, thanks to Vector and Virus, we're receiving the story of the Cockroach King for what he has always been; a malevolent force of nature, unafraid to destroy everything standing in his path in his conquest to obtain what he feels is rightfully his. I look forward to my thoughts being proven or dis-proven when Virus finally launches!

I think i've come to my decision now, Virus is not only my favourite Haken record, but also their absolute best. This band spoke to me a few years back with Visions, and later with Affinity, being albums with a lot of big emotional moments and eclectic musical elements. But it wasn't until now that they spoke to me on a truly spiritual level. This album speaks volumes more than it lets on as it weaves through themes of mental illness, toxic relationships and insanity. I think beyond all the crazy lore this a very human album about the suffocating grip of the modern world, alienation, our broken relationships with each other, and how the expectations placed on us and endless noise of modernity can drive one to depression, addiction, disassociation, abuse, cruelty, corruption and ultimately madness. And its all done with the perfect style and sound for each emotional beat that it hits, with some of the best melodies and riffs the band has ever put out. Masterpiece

i think the beginning of the song features some really nice synthy bits. But i know what you mean, they kinda shifted their style in a more heavy direction with vector and they seem to keep going with that on virus. I really love their older records with the jazzy bits and softer or less dark parts, but i also am glad that they keep changing and evolving... i mean we dont need another the mountain. we have a great one that cant really be better.

Maybe the E. Coli looking thing is a manifestation of the "Cockroach King" - The verse riff and outro (same idea) are the same rhythm as the breakdown/bridge of 1985 (post chorus) - Several of the guitar licks/fills such as 3:31 mirror licks/riffs from Nil By Mouth - 4:50 bears resemblance to A Cell Divides - The researchers at the end of the video are wearing suits with the "The Architect - Jazzfinity" logo on the back Find any more?

I avoided vector cause I didn't like the way the singles sounded, until one day when Spotify just threw Veil and Nil by mouth in my shuffle list, I was completely blown away.
