Haitians Resist Foreign Intervention as U.S. Pushes for Unelected “Transition Council”

Support our work: www.democracynow.org/donate?c...
We get an update on the crisis in Haiti, where deadly violence has continued to escalate between armed groups and police fighting for control of the capital Port-au-Prince. The country’s political future remains unclear, with recently resigned Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who is stranded outside of Haiti, raising questions this week over the constitutionality of a “transitional council” formed to serve as an interim governing body until elections are scheduled.
Meanwhile, Canadian forces have been sent to Jamaica to train troops from Caribbean nations to join the U.N.-authorized mission to Haiti. Haitian American scholar Jemima Pierre says the transitional council is essentially a front for U.S. interests, and warns there will be “inevitable war crimes” if foreign troops are deployed to Haiti. “It’s a terrible situation, but I think the idea that there’s a Haitian-led solution coming is actually a false one,” says Pierre.
We are also joined by Kim Ives, editor of the English section of Haiti Liberté, who says Haiti is in the midst of a “revolutionary process,” led by Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier. Ives says that far from being a gang leader, Chérizier has built a coalition to fight the criminal groups in the country and was central to the ouster of Ariel Henry. “You always have to demonize, criminalize the people’s resistance, and that’s what we’re seeing today when they try to put all the armed groups of Haiti’s popular classes into one bag called 'the gangs,'” says Ives.

200+ years ago Haiti became an independent state … it was born in blood .. an estimated 200,000 ex slaves, 25,000 colonialists, and 120,000 French and British Soldiers ( who were fighting each other ) were casualties that’s 355,000 people! Compare that to say the Reign of Terror in the French Revolution ( of 50,000). What this shows is how Haiti is so steeped in blood from its very foundation to today . It’s been a State, a Kingdom, an Empire … it conquered the western part of Hispaniola ( only to be overthrown by the people of the Dominican Republic). Free American slaves even emigrated to Haiti ( only to return to the U.S. - which at that stage still had slavery!). There have always been coups counter coups dictatorships counter dictatorships and alway blood lots and lots of blood. The bottom line is this trying to manage Haiti as normal country is a will not work. Haiti is basically a “tribal” state.. that’s what the gangs are … tribes… You are with this gang or that gang… but in the end it’s a gang. Listening to all the Haitian “intellectuals” is a joke. The first thing they all have in common is that they are not in Haiti ( first thing they did was to get our) second thing that they all have in common is citizenship (if not first themselves for their children) in another country. I do not blame them I would do the same. Unfortunately democracy has not and will not and can never work in Haiti. It’s like trying to get prison gangs to run a prison. Each gang will only be able to to run it until another gang is formed which takes out the first gang and so on. I guarantee if tomorrow a country like the U.S. were to offer citizenship to Haitians if they were to leave Haiti, all 11 million people in Haiti ( including the gangsters) would be gone. When for 220 years all you have ever know is bloodshed and murder as a standard way of living what do you expect. Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the same island, both have a history of slavery yet they are different worlds … why because it’s just how Haiti is. Do you think the other Caribbean countries ( and African countries) are stupid not to get involved… no they just realise that you could deploy 1 million soldiers invest a trillion dollars, have all the democratic elections you want .. 5 years after you leave … gangs will be back and Haiti would be back in the same hole it’s been in for 200 years!

While I understand Haitians not wanting outside interuption in their politics; they have not provided any concrete plan to stablize the country. There is no balance, therefore, it make me question if they know what they really want as a nation. Lots of complaining with no actual plan. Haiti ought to bring forth a plan on how they intend to stabalize their country; which certainly they will get the assistance they vitally need to move forward, without any further incident. Action speaks louder than word. Haitians, show the world your love of country. This is not a Revolution, this is Destruction. Over 200 hundred years to actually lose for what you fought for? What are your plans (Haiti) for the next 100 years? Or you (Haiti) is not looking that far? Make it make sense.

This is one case where I think an international coalition would be warranted to manage things for a while. Haiti has been in a perpetual state of crisis/revolt/self-immolation for the past 3 generations. It doesn't matter the reason or historical precedent - they are not capable of self-rule. On the plus side, they also have no natural resources and are not a strategic military point, so it's not like a Western nation would WANT to control the area for longer than necessary.

Any leader that does not agree and tries to help the Haytian people, ends up like President Jovenel Moise. The US can help by first returning the island of La Navasse and all the money and gold they took in 1914. Stop violating Hayti and stop meddling in our affairs.
