Debt, Coups & Colonialism in Haiti: France & U.S. Urged to Pay Reparations for Destroying Nation

We look in depth at “The Ransom,” a new series in The New York Times that details how France devastated Haiti’s economy by forcing Haiti to pay massive reparations for the loss of slave labor after enslaved Haitians rebelled, founding the world’s first Black republic in 1804. We speak with historians Westenley Alcenat and Gerald Horne on the story of Haiti’s finances and how Haitian demands for reparations have been repeatedly shut down. Alcenat says the series “exposes the rest of the world to a knowledge that actually has existed for over a hundred years,” and while he welcomes the series, he demands The New York Times apologize for publishing racist Haitian stereotypes in 2010 by columnist David Brooks. Horne also requests The New York Times make the revelatory documents that the series cites accessible to other historians. He says the series will “hopefully cause us to reexamine the history of this country and move away from the propaganda point that somehow the United States was an abolitionist republic when actually it was the foremost slaveholder’s republic.”

I have visited Haiti. Never have I met so many good, brave and beautiful people struggling against so many difficult problems. This episode reveals what many have known for years: Haiti has been undermined and attacked since it first gained it's freedom. The Haitians met President "all men are created equal" Jefferson and were turned away. We owe the Louisiana Purchase in many ways to the successful Haitian Revolution. France gave up on its hope of a "New" world empire and sold its North American holding to the US. Have we ever thanked the Haitians? No, but we did loan them money (US banks) to pay reparations to the French. Exploitation more than human rights.

Thank u Andy for being objective and for speaking the truth and not propaganda about haitian people. The haitian people are the true exceptional peoples for their resiliency in struggling to survive beyond all obstacles placed in their path by former colonizers. We can still see it today, the unwavering efforts the masses are making in order to survive beyond imagination. Haiti is an agrarian state where 80% of its pop was employed in agriculture which produced 95% of its domestic consumption up to early 21st century under President Aristide. When a country produces majority of its domestic consumption, it paves the way to development, social and economic which was interrupted by US foreign policy begining in the 1978 with the eradication of the creole pigs that represented capital investments for the masses. It costs the US implemented by USAID $23 million to annihilate the creole pigs meanwhile that economic devastation wiped out $600 million from the Haitian economy that year. It is imperative to remember that the pigs were assets that would continue to grow with each porcine breeding every 6 months or twice a year. It is quite simple to figure out how much the economic destruction the US foreign policy inflicted upon the peasant farmers for years to come. A simple calculation of the $600 mil multiply by 44 years would amount to $26.4 and that is only a moderate calculation of one breeding a year not two which amount would double. The lost of the creole pigs set off a wave of migrants to the florida keys as many families were bankrupted and the govt was unable to provide any relief for the economic losses suffered by smallholder farmers. Today, Haiti still finds small merchants peddling the streets with any little trunkets or food crops they purchase for resell in order to make a living and not rely on handouts or govt assistance which doesnt exist. The predatory mafia class holding the economy hostage uses the govt as its first client where majority of their investments are purchased by the govt which leaves no budget for socio-economic programs, not education, not healthcare and no job creation. Haiti is a mafia state that the people must work to destroy these predators that are devastating the lives of the Haitian people. Its bad govt, its no govt at all to create the atmosphere to pillage and plunder the resources of the state. There are resource studies showing that Haiti has more oil than venezuela, hydrocarbons, copper, nickle, silver, gold, irridium and uranium, etc. These resources are said to be worth trillions of dollars. In fact Haiti is not poor, Haiti is poorly managed and its state is held captive by the predators in the atlantic.

Little known fact: Napoleon had a plan that after defeating the Haitians he would use it's battle hardened soldiers to help set up an empire in its Louisiana territory. That would've had the US facing the nightmare scenario of having armed and experienced black soldiers of an enemy nations sharing the sub continent and the prospect of their own slaves escaping across the border and joining up with the French/Haitian armies

When I was in France doing my Master's in Economic Development, we were doing comparative studies about Development between countries. This French teacher had the audacity to try to explain the difference between Haiti and Singapore. As an African, I knew how French actions have impacted negatively the progress of Haiti. I got up of my chair and protested vehemently to the surprise of my classmates. The same teacher who visited China in the 60s also did the same by claiming China is a very poor country based on his visit in the 60s, which led my Chinese classmate to protest ( timidly though).

Ignorance and lack of knowledge are fatal. The wise old saying that "my people perish because a lack of knowledge" has never been true as it is now. My mother is 71 years old born in 1951. She is the so called "American Christian" and have been indoctrinated to believe the lies of white American Christians that Haiti and Africa are punished by GOD due to their witchcraft and voodoo religions. Of course, growing up as a kid you believe what your parents or guardians repeat over and over again and/or tell you. But ever since I've researched, studied and learned the truth I can't tell you how angry it makes me. I found myself angry all the time. Knowledge is power but it also makes you angry, lol. How can you be an enemy to your parents? But Jesus said that the gospel will turn mother against daughter and son against father. Although, I avoid these topics when we get together but it is hard to ignore the feelings. I don't know about your upbringing, but I sense that this misleading information and miseducation has been the fabric of all Americans, but especially black Americans throughout history in the USA. We have single handedly been the instruments of our own self-destruction. We have helped to destroy and persecute our leaders and profits.

However, the fact that the first Black president, never bothered to visit the first and only free Black nation in the western hemisphere, really told me what he was truly about. He visited practically every country in Europe, Japan, China, India, Australia, Israel etc. But not my ancestors homeland. It would have been helpful if the first Black President confronted the French Government in regards to the billions in reparations that we were forced into paying under the threat of sanctions, embargoes, and more war (The United States was also willing to support these devils to fortify white supremacy), because of the fact that we fought and killed as men, and freed ourselves from the scourge of slavery! These billions that we have been paying would help to build our nation, but it wasn't important to him obviously. Pale-skinned European/French people like Christopher Columbus renamed my birthplace and other Indigenous islands. My birthplace, "St. Croix", isn't the actual/real name. Just like "America" isn't the actual/original/real name of this Indigenous, stolen, continent. A lot of you "woke adults" are still to blame, including the *"woke adults"* at *"Democracy Now".* There was also no such thing as *"politics/politicians"* when Indigenous people became the first people on this planet. I am also/still sick and tired of the majority of *"woke"* Caucasian people who still feel the need to "educate" Black/Brown about Black/Brown history. It is the same mess when my "woke" mother moved me to the divided states to live with certain "woke family members" for a "better education". My so-called, woke, grandmother basically had the audacity to tell me, " Now that you're in states, you can't/shouldn't speak in our Caribbean accent/dialect because white people will make fun of you and think you're a dummy" while still speaking in our Caribbean accent/dialect. The majority of other people of color are still brainwashed by Caucasian washed "education". There were also no such slavery, racism, and or wars when Indigenous tribes were on this planet, first. Indigenous people of color were already the first people to create/invent things like tools, agriculture, inclusiveness, housing, herbal medicines, surgeries, music.

its almost like decolonization never has any success. Here is the sad part about helping poor countries, if those nations can never maintain the assistance they receive by their own means-they will always, like clockwork, find themselves worse off. Example, if you airdrop food on a population-they will eat, children will grow, population will grow, but if they do not take over that food production you will have a situation with more mouths too feed than before help was sent. When the airdops of food stop, absolute hell on earth raises, and starvation is a worse death than war.

Everyone else was either bad (Soviets, Chinese - Communism, of course Fascism Nazism) or beneath us (African countries, India, south America etc). I grew up believing that the West European and North American way of life was the best. It has become clear, again again, that the advantage the white European/American has, is founded on the tortured bodies and minds of millions of people who were enslaved, exploited, massacred, mutilated.

Dominicans started to deport them in huge numbers because their women start having children as teens and pop out a new baby every year, abusing the Dominican welfare. At 25 is common for these women to have 7 or 8 living children, despite having access to free birth control provided by the Dominican Public Healthcare System. There is a huge historical and moral debt (financial as well) with Haiti and you mention several important points here. The Hispaniola island was the first European (Spain) colony in the American continent. France invaded the west part (Haiti) till the point Spain had to split the island into 2 colonies (French Haiti and Santo Domingo grew smaller. After the Haitian independence, they saw the Dominican side weak to defend itself and invaded the east part of the island which had its independence from Spain only two month earlier. They occupied Santo Domingo for 22 years till 1844, when dominicans regained their independence from Haitians. Two different countries with different languages, cultures and path in history. Haiti needs urgent help as the Dominican Republic is the natural place to look for refuge from the horrors happening there right now but the DR cannot afford to help more than it does now. Schools , hospitals and other services are being flooded as much as 40% by the neighbors. Resouces are limited and the clock is ticking before it threatens the stability of the east side of the island too.

History does repeat it self. Keys to understanding modernity lie in historical fact. Beware of fake history creators though. Americans do not understand their own civil war, why would they care about Hati? But they should. Napoleon sold the Louisiana purchase to the US for funding to put down Hati's slave rebellion. Fast forward, Democracy Now, never discusses the role of the Castorol Corporation's destruction of Hati's rich farmlands. But does dance around the truth that the NWO in 1871, replaced traditional slavery with debt servitude. Traditional slavery required feeding, clothing, and housing of slaves, in national debt servitude, none of this required, and in default real property is gained. There is no gain at the end of a slaves life for the investment. However, global depopulation is easy when all real property and assets are seized in debt default. ALL WARS ARE BANKERS WARS

You can include CANADA in that 2004 Coup Paul Martin the then P.M. of Canada was leader in that coup meeting held at MEECH Lake North of Ottawa and the Canadian Army was given the Role of Taking over the Air Port in Haiti. it had a lot to do with the Montreal sweat shops in Haiti When Jean Bertrand Aristides raised the Minimum wage, Worked to strengthen the Education System and also the Hospitalization system . They, Canada, France and the USA were all fearful of Jean Bertrand Aristide's love and Respect of the people of Haiti and they still have restraints against Aristides

Everyone talks about American reparations when the French case in Haiti is even more ludicrous. Not just the slavery, France sailed a naval fleet to Haiti a few years after the revolution and forced the nascent government to sign a deal to payoff all the slaveowners for their "lost property". It took about 2 centuries for Haiti to repay those debts, which was a key reason the nation was so utterly broke for so long.

Same thing happened in our country (Indonesia); we had to pay the dutch for their losses in "property" and etc., as part the agreement for independence. Then they came back (US this time) with 1998 ochestrated economic crisis. Colonialism is not over, and the mentality is still there, that's how the west got "developed".

I’m an “African American,” and I noticed a pattern. Whenever a European imperialist power gets run out of another country, Uncle Sam runs in to either help save the day or to become the new vampire on that country’s neck….or I am just seeing things?😏🫣

I feel stupid to say this, but I had always thought of the Netherlands/Dutch as a benign liberal country, then I watched a program on television that showed Dutch atrocities (genecides) AFTER World War II to try to reclaim after Japan's exit. I was shocked by the murderous and failed rampage. And being a fairly in depth history person surprised how unaware I was and learned from a source such as television. Power corrupts. Blood wicked species, human beings. Also intelligent and kind. Conflicted smart killers. RIP all the indigenous peoples who have suffered so.

@@tonyjones1560 Correct, it is important to recognise the thought patterns, the strategies and methods of the powers in the post colonial era. Unfortunately many brain washed people just run with the story we are given. I am glad that documentation has been recovered which help expose some of what was done. History and truth is our ally. There is one set of laws and conventions for white and another for black, brown and indigenous people, and that needs to be exposed and challenged!
