Jamaica, Antigua & Barbuda May Cut Ties to British Monarch; Renew Call for Reparations for Slavery

We look at how the death of Queen Elizabeth II is prompting former British colonies in the Caribbean to replace the British monarch as their head of state. Antigua and Barbuda's prime minister has vowed to hold a referendum soon on whether to become a republic, and Jamaica's ruling Labour Party also plans a vote. The Caribbean at one point formed the heart of England's first colonial empire in North America, with millions of enslaved Africans taken to the islands, where many were worked to death. Dorbrene O'Marde, chair of the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Commission, says he is not personally mourning Queen Elizabeth's death because her reign helped to "cloak the historical brutality of empire in this veneer of grandeur and pomp and pageantry." We also speak with renowned Jamaican poet and musician Mutabaruka, who says the British monarchy "represents criminal activity" and that the British state needs to make reparations to former colonies like Jamaica to redress the history of abuses. "Actions speak louder than words," he says.

Citizen of the Commonwealth here. We do rule ourselves. Our connection to the UK is ceremonial and VOLUNTARY. But it also offers support to small nations. When hurricane Dorian battered two of our islands in The Bahamas the British navy was waiting offshore before the storm left. The Bahamas never suffered through such a dangerous or catastrophic storm; this was the first time our people ever died from hurricane. The support of the UK as a Commonwealth partner was vital for a small nation and a archipelago that never dealt with a disaster of that magnitude.

Look at the medallion worn by the Governor General of Jamaica, a white angel standing on the back of a black man who represents the devil, so the black man is depicted as the devil and the white man an angel. It was not until the incident of George Floyd and the white policemen that kneeled on his back and murdered him that the Jamaica governor realize what he was wearing around his neck to represent the Queen. It is symbolic of oppression. Shame on the British monarch. How can a country be a member of the commonwealth and yet need visas to enter England. There are lots of scars there, take for instance the Windrush generation and what Britain is doing to these Caribbean people who were taken from their homeland to fight world war 11, taken back to their countries then brought back to England to rebuild a country which was devastated, a country without skilled workers, a country with structures of pure shell. These Windrush generation worked without having decent place to lay their heads to make Britain great again. It’s time for all these commonwealth countries to move on

The rest of the country suffers as a result. They don't have to migrate either way. If they all migrate, there's no way they can develop their own countries. A major crisis for British commonwealth nations is brain-drain. Whether Nigeria or Bahamas, the most ambitious and high-skilled people often leave for US, UK, France, Germany, Canada. Why should we expect them to improve if they keep leaving their homelands to chase a buck? (Or a pound)

Colonialism isn't a thing of the past. The reverberations are still felt today. The royal family continues to benefit from all they pillaged in the West Indies and beyond. These atrocities need to be made right and any semblance of their presence needs to be banished from the West Indies.

My brother at the end, I appreciate you for saying it how it is. Vive la revolution! This revolution is mental. It's subtle, it will be done with love and it will last for a long while. It's worth dying for. It's worth fighting for. It's worth sacrificing for. It's the reason why we are born in our time. It is our duty to make the dream a reality for those who will follow and we ourselves will come back and enjoy the fruits of our own labor according to the nature law. The universal laws that govern all things. I believe

This is the truth I have experienced. I am in my 50s and I remember my grandparents especially my grandmother working on an estate under harsh supervision that even a minute late is subtracted from her pay. She along with other parents worked the lands; clearing weeds and harvesting cocoa, banana and nutmeg. I picked up her wages every fortnight (Fridays afternoons)and it was pennies in my view. Men got more than women for working the same job and doing the same time. I remember barely collecting over $25.00 a FORTNIGHT. All the money went to England. I was young but old enough to understand how wrong it was. I felt hurt for my grandmother because I knew she was overworked and under paid. NOW, TELL ME THIS. HOW DOES ANYONE EXPECT ME TO FEEL THE LOST FOR SOMEONE WHO WAS NEVER THERE FOR ME NOR THERE FOR MY PEOPLE IN THE FIRST PLACE? To be honest. What or whom am I supposed to be mourning for? HOW COULD I *LOST A LOVE I NEVER HAD* The Europeans have all right to mourn their queen because she broke down doors, stole lands and stole resources for them. But as for me, she had done nothing but her and her family destroyed the lives of mllions of my people. This is my truth and I will stuck to it.

Thank God for my brother Muta!!! I am grateful that in this time we still have bold and fearless freedom fighters, there are many many Jamaicans echoing your sentiments and I am personally thankful for your contribution sir, it's a shame that after all we've been through as a people by the hands of this cruel British monarchy our prime minister is asking Jamaicans to honor not one but twelve days of mourning for the queen!!!! Smh ...Here in Jamaica we live with the sad reality of gruesome murders every day, the country's most vulnerable are taken out like dogs!!! So many broken hearts broken homes, yet Andrew holness has NEVER seen it fit to mourn a day for our people! But he's asking us to mourn for a institution which to this day still has mental chains on us through our constitution!!!! Mourn fi wah?????
