Subhan’Allah very very good podcast. Wow Dr Ahmed speaks so much sense as he knows history, he sees where things are coming from and where they’re heading. Regrettably so many people are just ignorant of basic history or even educated to any level. He is correct again in saying only people who are experts should actually have an opinion which is valid. Anyone else’s should be put in the recycle bin (yep even mine).

Thanks for your hard work. This was a discussion with scope far beyond the Haga Sophia 'incident'. Dr Ahmed's thoughts represent maslaha, ijtihad, ihsan and ikhlas inshallah at both the micro and macro level- his students are lucky to have him. Where are we going as an ummah is such a complex, pitfall-ridden question that requires many hours of discussion and analysis. Upon reflection, on one hand, we find the plight of the Uighurs, Syrians, Yemenis, Rohyingas, Palestinians and others as a damning reflection of our cowardice, 'presentism' and myopia. However, on the other hand, we have so many leaders around the world that continue to do amazing work politically, academically, socio-culturally and much more. Unifying and uniting these great minds and hearts would be a glorious achievement for the most glorious of communities. It would be possible and amazing if we were able to collectivize and mobilize more but that assumes all groups in the ummah want the same thing, which is patently, sadly not the case. The reality is that the ummah is as heterogeneous as it's ever been. The ideological potion of secular liberalism, postmodernism and critical theory here in the West has long been drunk by the hearts and minds of many in the ummah- while the wounds of colonialism, collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the two World Wars continue to weep and moan in myriad manifestations, lamentably. We seek power, courage and perspicacity from Allah alone, and he is sufficient for us a guide and Lord..

From a political perspective what is the reason for converting Hagia Sofia from a museum into a mosque at this time. What happened/changed that the turkish gov decided now is the right time? Something i dont fully understand but hopefully u may clarify is if the aim of Turkish gov is to enhance Islam and make it stronger why do they persist in the persecution of the Kurdish people? Im genuinely asking do they not see the kurds as muslims and if so why?

Greetings brother, the prof should have a better answer , but I'll try to help out, I hope I won't be long winded The answer of yr questions lies in domestic politics and a bit of history History: armenia, Israel, ...are good egs...to be very short, a 100 yrs ago they both weren't on the map, u can say they were supported to be built in to divide between states in that region , the attempt now seems to be with the Kurdish pple as well. Dom politics: Kurds generally are actually not persecuted , to latch on the History point above, some ideological political Kurd groups are being supported (In Turkey, Iran , Syria, iraq) Nd that would cause the problem mentioned above as well , so this is what "against the Kurds " propaganda is a about really. Hagia Sophia situation now,..in the last few yrs with the Turks gov direction, especially after the coup attempt, is a message for 1) Muslims in general to like and support Turkey (and it's actions ,Libya , Somalia etc) 2) the outer world, as political declaration of war in a sense , threatening the predominant soft power and international power of the west. Sorry if I was not short enough , and there are a lot more details . Have a good day :)

Ibrahim Sharara wsalaam brother i understand why it would now at this stage would be problematic for turkey to allow a independant kurdish state in the region however why does the turkish regime persist in suppressing the kurdish culture eg. Language/music. It seems to me it is this attempt to eradicate the kurdish culture that has sparked the rise of groups such as PKK, also how can it be justified islamically for turkey to bomb/arrest innocent people? Erdogan has been in power for years could he not have sent that message to muslims and the west years ago?

@@OWA1S. hi ,it's a pleasure for me to have this dialogue , and thank you :) . Ok , I'll mention in a general quick style : turkey has been doing that for the last 130 yrs more or less , in a terrible way, at the end of caliphate and beginning of hard secularism, and since then ,until 11 yrs ago to be precise .why ? Because turkey has been nationalistic secularist for all that time,... the first "real conflict" between islamic turkey and hard secularism turkey started in 2009 , that is when u can really pin point the beginning of islamic sentiment practically in turkey , lead by erdogan, minor but obvious, then reinforced by a 2016 coup as louder and prominent . Since then u can actually start realistically putting islamic resp. On turkey. The innocent civilian matter: I'll give an example , there are really two main incidents in the last few yrs , set by Euro court of HRights. (The Syrian /Kurd politician and fighters incident ---the 19 Kurd fighter bombing) were both claimed had civilian deaths in them . The EU court has not reached a decision yet, but the investigations and reports put on these two incidents, mention actually conflicting stories ,wether there were civilian deaths or not. Worth mentiong though as well that the EU Court has actually applauded turkeys continuous factual efforts on the HR of Kurdish pple( which is a very important distinction between them and PKK, it's like saying the American pple and the American gov.) .btw , I can provide u all that from the UN and EU websites if you would like . I hope I didn't bore u :D My main point here actually in short is , there are a lot of "pushed perceptions" being put out there, and I think in these messed up times, we should exert way too much effort to sort things out :D

Ibrahim Sharara jazakallah brother this has helped my understanding a lot but correct me if im wrong what ur saying is that there is now a divide in turkey between nationalists and islam? In regards to the kurds i have seen many examples online of young men being arrested for listening to kurdish songs and people speaking kurdish language as well as a recent video of a innocent family being bombed. This is without doubt oppression so why is there not a big push in turkey especially from the Islamic split which i understand to be a 50/50 between islam and Turk nationalists. Whose side would you say Erdogan is on because it is his gov that is comitting these crimes. If he is on the side of islam eg. Hagia Sofia, then why is he going against islam by persecuting a people. Also i believe the coup in 2016 was by the military? Whose side are the military on then? Theres a lot of confusion for muslims outside of Turkey, especially from the West where many muslims are seeing Palestine, Kashmir, Yemen being bombarded everyday and asking where are the muslim nations/islams leaders? So from the outside we can not tell if Erdogan is one to trust or not

Islam The Beautiful Religion ( Be Just ) Quran 5:8 '' O ye who believe! stand out firmly for God, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the HATRED OF OTHERS TO YOU make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear God. For God is well-acquainted with all that ye do. '' Quran 4:58 '' Indeed, God commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which God instructs you. Indeed, God is ever Hearing and Seeing.'' ( God's The Rules Of War ) Quran 2:190 '' Fight in the way of God THOSE WHO FIGHT YOU but do not transgress. Indeed. God does not like transgressors. '' Quran 2 :193 '' And fight them on until there is no more oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in God; but if they cease, Let there be no hostility except to those who practice oppression. '' Quran 4:90 ''.........So if they withdraw from you and cease their hostility and offer you peace, in that case Allah has not granted you permission to fight against them.'' Quran 8:61 ''And if they seek peace, then you also seek it, and put your trust in God. He is the Hearer, the Knowledgeable.'' ( Stand Up For Justice ) Quran 4 :135O '' Ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even as against YOURSELVES, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be (against) rich or poor: for God can best protect both. Follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest ye swerve, and if ye distort (justice) or decline to do justice, verily God is well-acquainted with all that ye do.'' ( Who Are The Good Human Beings? ) Quran 177 '' Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, IN SPITE OF LOVE FOR IT, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives charity; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous. '' ( Freedom To Believe And To Reject ) Quran 2:256 '' Let there be no compulsion in religion. Truth stands out clear from error '' Quran 10:99 '' And had your Lord willed, those on earth would have believed - all of them entirely. Then would you compel the people in order that they become believers? '' ( Tolerance For Other Religions ) Quran 109: 1- 6 Say,"O disbelievers, I do not worship what you worship. Nor are you worshipers of what I worship. Nor will I be a worshiper of what you worship. Nor will you be worshipers of what I worship. For you is your religion, and for me is my religion." ( Protection for Idol Worshiper ) Quran 9:6 "And if any one of the polytheists seeks your protection, then grant him protection so that he may hear the words of Allah. Then deliver him to his place of safety. That is because they are people who do not know. " Quran16:125 “Call people to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good teaching, and argue with them in the most courteous way” Quran7:199 “Be tolerant, command what’s right, pay no attention to foolish people” ( Friendship With Non Muslims ) Quran 60:8 '' God does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, God loves those who act justly. '' ( Do Christians And Jews and "OTHER" non-Muslims go to Heaven? ) Quran 2:62 '' Those who believe (in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and the Christians and the Sabians,->ANY Protecting Friends Quran 9:71 ''And the believers, men and women, are > Protecting Friends Quran16:97 “To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions. Quran 30:21 “And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy…” The Prophet Muhammad said, “Heaven lies under the feet of your mother.” ( Human Are One family ) Quran 49:13 " O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And God has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)." ( All The Racist People Will Enter Hellfire ) Quran 30:22 "And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and your colors. Indeed in that are signs for those of knowledge." My comment: The '' BASIC '' message of God to the human is that '' YOU '' believe in God and be kind to other human beings and in the RETURNED God will reward you with a new life in Paradise. * The Quran ONLY guides you how to become a good human being "Nothing Else". * You are a good human being or a bad human being that is YOUR choice. * No one can force you to become a good human being. * You MUST work HARD to become a good human being. * Why should ''YOU'' do good deeds and avoid bad deeds? * Do Good - it's for You. Do Bad - It's against you. * '' YOUR'' life is a TEST from God that you will choose to do either Good or Bad. * Find the excuse to help others and forgive others NOT the other way around. * '' YOUR '' final destination is either Hell or Heaven. * So work HARD toward choice of YOUR destination. Quran 17:7 " If you do good, you will do so for your own good. And if you do evil, it will be to your own loss."

And let's just ignore the first nearly 1000 years of Saint Sofia -- so easy to do. Just pick the historian and that gives you a particular perspective. How about an interview of a Byzantine historian or any mainline Christian historian (a Catholic, an Eastern Orthodox, etc) to get that perspective? It would be fascinating to see you interview such a historian and that at least would give you a more balanced understanding rather than just calling any other narrative as "Eurocentric" -- sounds rather dismissive. I am quite sure the Phanar could find you such a historian -- or how about interview the Greek Orthodox Archbishop of the US? He is well-educated, English-speaking, relatively young, spent many years in charge of Halki, and a Turkish citizen.

Let's then also ignore what would happen if, as the interviewee suggested, and what, logically speaking, your line of reasoning would require Fatih / the Ottoman authorities of the time to do: namely just leave the building in the hands of the church. The church would quickly have become a ruin! You do know that the building acted as a giant money pit of a liability until the incredibly well carried out strengthening of the building by Sinan during the 1500s? If the Ottomans had followed your advice the building would probably turn into a wreck with the forces of pigeon / bird poo attacking the structure within the time frame of a few earthquakes hitting the city. Using your logic there currently would not be a Haghia Sophia on the face of the Earth. (Case in point: look up what happened to the second church of Constantinople... The venetian / crusader invaders ransacked the place and so by the time the Ottomans arrived, the site was an absolute wreck that was so unsafe that they had to tear down in order to build an alternate structure in its place.)

the Conquest of Constantinople was in violation of your Qur'an. what the Ottomans did was disgraceful and sinful. And now they have down it again 600 years later. You just stuck a dagger in the heart of the Greeks Russians and all Eastern Orthodox Christians.

What do you think of the convention of Mosques to Churches & persecution of Muslims during the Spanish Inquisition. What about the demolition of Babri mosque in India? If you look into history & verified by many historians the treatment of conquered community by Ottomans against the Spanish Visigoth & Christian Crusaders vastly difference. The latter are more destructive, vindictive & cruel.

@Ionnis Grivas, Before the Roman Constantine conqueted the part of the world, it beling to the Turkic people. , the Ottoman just retook it back. It’s the prerogative of majorityTurks that decide what they want to use Hagia Sofia for as it belongs to them. If you are Turks citizen you can bring this case to court. If not just mind your own business.

@Ioannis Grivas how far do you want to go back? So by your logic USA should be handed back to the natives correct? The white europeans should still be paying reparations to the African and Asian continents and South American continent for looting, raping, pillaging and spreading diseases?
