Hacked: Compounding in Mistborn

Ойын-сауық

The nature of investiture makes it really difficult to power magic systems it doesn't originate from. However, there are apparently ways to do it. The most famous, and basically the only one that we actually know anything about, is Compounding.

    The compounding of pewter appeals to me more than most. The idea of being able to physically make yourself bigger and stronger with an invested pewter mind while also burning a non ferring pewter to allow you to use that strength to its fullest with the enhancement.

    Zinc would be interesting. I think there's a WoB somewhere saying zinc compounding has the potential harmful effect of "an infinite moment of thought," meaning you accidentally flare it too much and get yourself stuck in your own head, or at least that's what it would seem like. But hey, more time to think about homework, yay!

    Compounding is my favourite cosmere mechanic. It's exciting when you figure it out on its own, even more so when you think about the implications for later Mistborn entries, and positively mind melting when you put it in the context of 'hacking' other Investiture. Great video, this stuff always puts a smile on my dial.

    I've always been fascinated by compounding iron. Just how heavy could you make yourself? Also, Sanderson has shown that there is conservation of momentum (at least to a degree) with feruchemical iron, so if you compounded iron to make yourself incredibly heavy, broke into a sprint, jumped, and immediately started storing weight, you should accelerate to incredible speeds. You also get proportionally stronger as you tap weight to support and move normally with the additional weight, so in a way it would be a bit like tapping strength as well, without the physical increase in size. Imagine the potential force behind a punch backed with compounded iron. I'd imagine a 1000lb fist does not need to be moving fast at all to cause some serious damage. And what would an extra 500lbs on your back be when you can walk just fine already weighing thousands of pounds? And finally, what if you REALLY pushed it. If you really compounded iron, could you generate your own gravitational field? I'd imagine there being some serious potential for something like that to be used by a scadrian fabrial in the space age.

  • @TheCosmerenaut

    @TheCosmerenaut

    I'm pretty sure there's an upper bound as to how much weight you could tap, similar to steel. Though it totally makes sense for creating artificial gravity!

    I feel like there is an upper bound as to how much stronger your muscles can get before it becomes impossible for them with their surface area as it is to support your weight.... like, your muscles can't, even while enchanced, survive tons upon tons of weight. It must stop at some point, so I believe an iron compounder can pretty much kill himself while tapping weight

    I thought it was pretty clear that the extra feruchemical weight didn't allow users to generate more force from their movements. Whenever Wax had to break through a wall, he had to tap iron and let himself fall on it. In other words, the added mass did not contribute to the force of his strikes, he had to rely on gravity. The additional strength from tapping iron seems to only allow the user to maintain their normal capabilities. So regardless of whether someone is tapping or filling iron, or doing neither, they could never withstand an additional 500lbs on their back

Imagine if an iron compounder used their body to destroy an entire structure, reducing their weight to almost nothing to fly into a building at insane speed and then emptying their metalmind at the last moment to destroy whoever it hit entirely, or being able to summon any metallic object to themselves, regardless of weight.

    I have an idea for a possible version of hacking with Surgebinding and Feruchemy. If you use the surge of gravitation to increase the weight of a feruchemist, do you think that they would then be able to store that weight? If so, you could essentially turn stormlight into a feruchemical iron charge. You might also be able to use this to combat a Windrunner or Skybreaker who is trying to lash you by storing all that weight into an ironmind so you're weightless in whatever direction they lash you to. I don't know for sure if it works like that, but it would be cool if it did.

So he probably got close to the limit while maintaining good mobility. If we want to try power-scaling him, I'd have to guess he was somewhere above MCU Spiderman's level of strength (remember he casually caught a car in civil war and lifted that huge air-con thingy in homecoming) Although being able to burn allomantic pewter at the same time would be wild because you would have more strength than an equivalent pewter ferring, but also be much faster, much more durable and much faster healing. I always imagine copper Compounding like being able to get... the memory stored in that Coppermind reappearing in your head over and over again. It's like... the memory is not fading as far as you keep compounding it, but after you stop it sort of stays how it is without reappearing and starts decaying, as memories usually do. Now, could that be useful? The thing with compounding is, you can put the gained amount of an attribute into a new(probably, bigger) metalmind... so you can store the things you have compounded for yourself. Well, think about this: if, according to my view on it, copper Compounding makes the stored memories constantly renew in your head, then you pick up some other piece of copper and begin filling it with said memories. And then you pick up an another one. And again. And again, and so on. So, to summ up: I think copper compounding can actually help you create copies of your original memories, effectively making you able to tap --and, if needed, burn-- your copperminds for an infinite amount of stored Memories.

  • @NataliaPunko

    Also, Tin Compounding is somehow the only one idea of the base 16 which didn't get mentioned in this comment section so far... so, let's talk about it a bit. A double Tin Twinborn would easily be able to store some senses that Allomantic Tin provides: if your hearing is what bothers you of all 5 emotions, then you can make it as dull as that of a normal person. Now, it doesn't work that way with sight, but you can still just do the Spook spectacle-famric trick with a less thicc piece of clothing, if it really gets to you. Now, imagine being able to compound ANY of the 5 senses, going ZOOM anytime you wish, or even tapping your coumpounded sight tinminds while burning allomancy to both become a telescope AND be able to see in the dark more easily. Wow. And I'm not even talking about becoming a better --more controlled-- version of an allomantic tin savant. I mean, it looks like x2tin is an overly underrated combination, but it's also any Tineye's dream... being able to control the senses you get by the most part.

Question for you: What would happen if a Feruchemist stored and saved a bunch of metalminds, and had his imprint on them, but was then killed, say by Knightblood, destroying him in all realms? Would that make his metalminds open for anyone to use? Or would there be some kind of decay for that stored power since it seems to be tied to the individual? Thanks!

  • @TheCosmerenaut

    @TheCosmerenaut

    I think the feruchemist's identity would still be there, even if Nightblood ate them. Individuals killed by Nightblood are still remembered, still acknowledged to have existed, so the evidence of that existence should still be there. And as far as we know, feruchemical charges don't experience anything like hemalurgic decay (see the Bands of Mourning) so they'd probably just stay invested until they started to physically deteriorate.

Easy enough to come by, per say, but compared to something like breaths which just inherently live in you that'd be easier to move. Breaths cant be transferred in the same way, though, as we know. Alumancy is probably the easiest because the metals exist on other planets so you don't really need to bring anything, but are restricted to the genealogy of the user. I'm not writing a comment about my favourite twinborn Compounding combination(which is double-electrum, by the way), but I have a theory and I think it can immitate compounding in a certain way. Now, what if a Pinnacle gets affected by emotional allomancy while storing? I mean, it should definitely be possible to affect a Pinnacle, either helping him with storing Determination or the other way around by Soothing/Rioting Determination and Depression.... if it really works this way then paying some street rioter kids would be more than worth the theoretically infinite supply of Determination without the need of constantly buying new electrumminds... Man, this might turn out to be more overpowered for this attribute than actual Compounding, considering the costs for electrum and soothing/rioting.

    I've been really curious since the first ars arcanum of wax and wayne: when Khriss drew connections between twinborn and the radiant surges, what does that mean for the radiants? Like specifically: twinborn with matching metals can compound, but even the ones who can't compound have distinct advantages in some circumstances. Do the radiant surges work the same way, with some combinations being "more compatible" than others? Or because each surge can only combine with 2 others, are they always guaranteed to have the "compounding" equivalent? We have evidence of a compounding equivalent with windrunners, i think, given that one of the lashings seems to be a mixture of the other two (in my eyes). What about elsecallers? Or lightweavers? Heck, edgedancers?!

  • @TheCosmerenaut

    @TheCosmerenaut

    3 жыл бұрын

    The similarities with Twinborn and Radiant surges are the appearance of various Resonances, independent of whatever the powers are. The Resonance for Windrunners is an abundance of squires; Lightweavers have Shallan's mnemonic thing; Wax's ability to do his little steel bubble was supposed to be his Resonance, but Brandon backtracked on that. It all comes down to the fact that investiture has those specific frequencies, and when two frequencies overlap, there is constructive and destructive interference in the waveforms. So each pair of powers interacting could theoretically have their own unique Resonance.

    Oddly enough I think Duralumin might be one of the most oddly useful for certain professions. Or hacking magic systems. Having the ability to store and use huge amounts of connection would almost certainly allow you to effectively become native to a certain location. Tap enough connection to become Selish for instance and you may become able to access any and all of the arts there at different times. But being able to connect to a location would be useful for more mundane things like trading or diplomacy. If I had to choose however it would be Iron. Relatively total control over your weight would be good and overcomes the biggest limitations on a Lurcher like it does for Wax as a Coinshot. And IF (big if) you can survive increasing your mass enough you may just have figured out a way to produce time dilation. Not sure if this is a good thing but it would be fascinating to see.

    1. Is compounding effected in any way by the amount of Feruchemical attribute stored in the burnt metal? i.e. does it make a difference if I burn a metal mind storing 10 hours worth of attributes vs 100 hours worth the attribute? Another way to ask this question is- is compounding additive or multiplicative? In case it's latter then we can exponentially increase an attribute by burning a small amount of metal mind, store the attribute in another small metal mind, burn that and so on and so forth. This way one can obtain REALLY high yield out of small amount of metal. 2. Related to pure Allomancy, does strength of Allomancy changes the consumption of metal? We know that flaring a metal will increase metal consumption. But does Elend, who's Allomantic powers are stronger than, say Vin, burn metal faster?

  • @dracorim6370

    @dracorim6370

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah Compounding is directly affected by the amount in the burnt metal but it's a bit pointless as you can easily catch up. Compounding is multiplicative from what we have seen which is why it's so overpowered. For Allomancy, given what we know weaker Allomancers just waste a decent amount of the Allomantic power while Elend is able to squeeze out way more juice.

  • @TheCosmerenaut

    @TheCosmerenaut

    3 жыл бұрын

    1. Because the feruchemical store rewrites the investiture signal of the metal, I don't think a larger amount of feruchemical attribute would have any significant effect on the amount of power released while compounding. The multiplicative nature of it is what allows the exponential and functionally infinite capacity. 2. I don't think we have any indication that Elend burned through metals any faster than Vin. Being a more powerful allomancer simply meant he - being more Connected to Preservation because of his ingesting Lerasium - was able to access more power through the same key.

    You are correct, Adam. In a way feruchemically charging a metal makes it something brand new. That said, while the identity and investiture are different, it's the shape of the molecules that actually allows an allomancer to burn the metal, so even though it's spiritually something new, it's physically close enough to be allomantically viable, though with a divergent effect.
