Hi, your friendly neighbourhood chemist here, first of all I wanted to tell you, how much I enjoy your content. I really appreciate the effort you put in researching. Your explanation are always very comprehensible especially for people without chemical background. But you mentioned something that put me into know-it-all-mood. (I guess I have to do something with my education...) HA ist a so called hydrogel. Hydrogels are crosslinked 3D mesh or sponge like structures with multiple chemical functionalities. If you add 10% of HA into a watery solution, it would not turn into a sodium rock. It would turn into a gel since HA absorbs water into its pores (and pure HA does not contain sodium). It will form lumps and clumps and would not be pleasant to work with. Additionally it depends on the pH level of the solution wether HA is HA or sodium hyaluronate (SHA) because in the latter the acid group is deprotonised and carries a negative charge. That can be generated in a basic environment. Mostly that is not the case in skincare since the skin itself is slightly acidic (pH=5,5). The sodium does not even play a big role other than stabilizing the SHA in solid form, since it is only the counter ion to the negative charge. Soooo... it does not really matter if HA or SHA is added, at least from a chemical point of view. (Assuming HA and SHA have a simmilar moecular wheigt. Thank you for mentioning the size of different HA's). I suppose it is a logistical reason why SHA is added. HA crosslinks at its acid and alcohol group with itself and its salt derivative does not do that as much because, like I said, the acid group is deprotonized. Turning off the know-it-all-mood now. I hope this was a bit educational and I wish you a nice day. :)

So this is my way to maximize HA benefits to my skin: after cleansing, tone your skin with hydrating toner or any kind of toner you want. You can apply several layers of hydrating toner to soak your skin wet. Do not wait until it’s dry, apply one layer of HA serum. Next, one layer of mist spray. Wait for around 1-2 mins, use your best moisturizer to lock up everything. With this skin care routine, I can stay in air-con room all day without dehydrating my skin. Confidently 💁🏻‍♀️

@@marcelo98hv i've kinda just started the 7 skin method! haven't done it long enough to have seen the results yet, but i apply multiple layers throughout the routine and not all at once. i use one layer of toner after cleansing, then i sandwich a hefty spritz of water in between two layers of toner *before and after* HA application, so it's actually more like 5 layers throughout. fun times! maybe i'll come back to this comment section in a month and provide an update XD

Sodium hyaluronate is in a lot of supplements, I was taking 250mg daily and developed contact dermatitis on my face, I threw out all my cosmetics thinking they were the problem but the symptoms persisted even when I stopped using everything except cetaphil cleanser. This persisted for a year and left me at my wits end trying to figure out the cause of my once beautiful skin becoming so inflamed and sensitive. Well I discovered sodium HA is pro-inflammatory! There’s many research papers on the subject and apparently it’s because it’s a low molecular weight! High molecular weight HA is actually anti-inflammatory. So please beware and learn from my mistake. After ceasing the supplements my skin instantly recovered.

  • @SammieSunshineC

I am surprised she didn't dive deeper into molecular weight. Molecular weight (MW) is so important. In fact, too high MW will hardly penetrate deep enough to be effective, and too low will penetrate too deeply and inflame the skin. There is a sweet spot, science suggests 130 kDa. Most companies are not transparent about potency and molecular weight, so any purchase is gamble. I choose to make my own. However, I have not found a Hyaluronic Acid powder at 130 kDa, but have found others with a good molecular weight. Also, I am from Kentucky. We literally live in moisture it's so humid here. I used to hate it, now I am grateful for it!

If you live in a dry climate (like TORONTO in the wintertime) try using your hyaluronic acids serums and lotions as part of your nighttime routine and run a humidifier near your bed. You will have plump skin in the morning. You lips 👄 will be less chapped, too! Lol honestly use the humidifier in your room in winter ❄️ regardless of whether you use hyaluronic acid serums or not! It’s great when it’s dry out.

I used it right after applying aloe vera from leaf. And it dried soo much... I didn't understand why. Thank you for explaining what hyaluronic acid really is. 🙏

occlusives aftes the HA could probably help with a dry climate, sealing the moisture in

Thank you for your video I just subscribed to your channel :) Do you mind me asking if you are using a rose water toner before using HA will that also absorb water into the skin. Also what about using a facial oil like rosehip after HA?

Good thing you can apply before and after HA serum is lots of toner. Toners contain water so HA will suck that into the skin nicely and hydrate it.

I’ve been using 5% lactic acid once a day in the later evening, waiting for 25 minutes for it to absorb and then applying the hyaluronic acid on top and been seeing amazing results. Not sure if I’m doing the process right but it seems to be working so far.

Hi Cassandra! I LOVE your videos! been taking your advice; it's helping me so much thx! what are your thoughts on 'hyalauronic acid powder' and adding distilled water to it, please? I think you may cringe? I add vitamin e or c to it and keep it in the fridge. how bad is this to do really? its affordable for me and seems to work well for me. I do make sure there is plenty of water spritzed on my skin when I use it. If I don't use it {HA}, my skin sometimes doesn't feel as good.

Hey, I have oily skin some parts and dry in others, I have little spots that just seem to be there all the time, I rarely have completely clear skin. Do you have any advice about what Ordinary products could help, or which ones I should look into first??? Huge thanks love your channel.

Generally speaking you can figure out the humidity by looking up the weather. Of course it is different for buildings with AC or heating, but it's a good start I think ^^ In Vienna it has 9°C and a humidity rate of 42% today :)

Hi, Cassandra, Thanks for your informative videos. I just incorporated HA into my skincare routine. I apply it on a moist/damp face and then apply a homemade oil based moisturizer. Is this optimal or do I need a moisturizer with water in in. I drink about 3 liters of water a day and am pretty hydrated. Will using this oil moisturizer still dehydrate my skin?
