H1MIN: USS TANG - CIRCULAR RUN TORPEDO
Ғылым және технология
The US Navy had many technical problems with their torpedo technology during WWII. Even though improvements were made, there were still serious deficiencies which caused duds and misfires.
The USS Tang (SS-306) had the unfortunate distinction of being sunk by it’s last torpedo. Ironically, the Tang’s 5th war patrol had been one of its most successful. Lieutenant Commander Richard O’Kane was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions and Tang and crew were awarded many citations.
Thank you to the Naval Undersea Museum for the reference cutaway of the Mark 18 electric torpedo.

An unfortunate end to a submarine with an otherwise outstanding career. Also, the survivors from Tang where rescued by a destroyer escort ironically carrying the survivors from Tang's previous attacks, who upon realizing that immediately proceeded to beat the living crap out of the submariners.

This might sound odd but try placing yourself in the Japanese Survivors shoes. They are injured, on crutches and might have just seen their brothers in arms or even family members drown or died from the explosion caused by the torpedo and have spent at least 4 hours on the oil filled water and probably even drank some by accident and might be covered in it. The captain of SS Tang, whom survived, wrote that "When we realised out clubbings and kickings were being administered by the burned, mutilated survivors of our handiwork, we found we could take it with less prejudice"

@@CharChar2121 Neither is hunting shipping by submarine. Submarines are not required to rescue survivors from destroyed ships because it is not feasible. In every hostile action they take, they condemn every single person on the "enemy" ship to die in the explosion or drown in open water. Surface ships are required to pickup survivors rather than leave them to drown in the open ocean. Moreover, the targets were civilian, just people trying to make ends meet.

Sunk by the US Navy's 2nd greatest enemy after Japan, the Bureau of Ordnance. What a sad story considering USS Tang was one of the most , if not THE most, successful subs of WW2.

The Tang was the second highest scoring American sub in the Pacific theater, though, with 24 confirmed sinkings over it's nine months of service, and even more ships damaged. And a circular run torpedo also claimed a German U-boat, too. American torpedoes in WW2 were bad, and submarine commanders kept saying things like: "Our torpedoes often detonate early, or don't detonate at all, run deep and have a tendency to do circular runs. We need better torpedoes." and the ordinance department kinda just said: "Uh... I dunno. Aim better or something, I guess?"

Couldn't the submarine steer left and have more chances of dodging the circular torpedo? I mean when you steer right it has more chances of hitting your end but when you steer left you sort of follow it and have chance to make a less tight turn and make it miss. Do I have a point? Or maybe steer some left for 10 seconds and engage full power straight. So you make a bigger curve and torpedo misses. Wouldn't it work? I know this all happens very fast but that's a chance I would be willing to take in that circumstance.

I hope someone more knowledgeable than me responds, because I was thinking the same thing.
@mattislindehag3065
2 жыл бұрын
The torpedo will keep moving in a counter clockwise circular path untill it runs out of batteries. By steering left you turn in towards the centre point of that path and end up inside of that circle. Yes, you got the stern out of it's way and the path is probably wide enough that it will miss your bow when it comes around again but now you need to get the entire lenght of the submarine out of that circle faster than the torpedo can complete a lap. You can't just stop there. The sub has too much inertia for it to just stop on the spot. Turning left would have been a death sentence. Turning right they at least had a chanse.
@jeffbenton6183

What do you use for your animations
"Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave, Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep, O hear us when we cry to thee For those in peril on the sea!"
Did the Tang's first torpedo, the one that went straight , hit it's target and sink it?
This may happen even today. Because today's torpedoes follow ships and they are attached to the submarine via wire. If the wire is cut and the torpedo ingages the sub it was shot from, it's most likely game over. Modern torpedoes are very, very great and they will ignore noisemakers sometimes.
@Tank50us
2 жыл бұрын
they are, and they aren't at the same time. Modern Torpedoes can still miss their mark, and will eventually run out of fuel and self-destruct. The key is to stay out of its search cone.
@p_filippouz

@@Tank50us yep
Unfortunately, the Tang was not the only submarine to succumb to this fate, the submarine Tullibee (SS-284) befell a similar fate during the raid on Truk. It found a Japanese cargo ship escaping the stronghold, fired a torpedo, which malfunctioned and hit the submarine on the starboard side, killing all but one crew member almost instantly. One crewman was standing atop the conning tower when the torpedo hit and the blast blew him clean from the submarine, where after being fired at the next morning by a Japanese destroyers main caliber guns, anti-air armament and even small arms, he was picked up, imprisoned and put into a copper mine until the end of the war, when he was released, sole survivor of the Tullibee, finally a free man.
What happened to the torpedo that didn't malfunction?
Wonder how many subs evaded Circular Runs?
That sucks….your telling us that it was basically a roll of the dice whether or not your objective was destroyed/crippled, or you were hit with your own ordinance. That would have been nerve racking beyond belief. The sailors on these vessels are heroes. All of them.
@mattislindehag3065
2 жыл бұрын
US Submarines were sometimes vanishing without the Imperial Japanese Navy reporting sinking any (Japanese encryption was broken early). No one knew what was happening to to them but faulty torpedoes circeling around were suspected. The Department of Ordinance viewed it as a crackpot theory. While it is unlikely that all of the vanished subs were lost this way USS Tang proves that some, possibly even many of them were. USS Tang remains the only confirmed case because any other potential case had no survivors.
I wonder if the crew that didn't make it died in the escape attempt or if flooding surged and they drowned in the sub. I'm assuming the survivors used Momsen lungs to escape.
Even torpedoes aren't innocent from being a snake also
Now tell us about the USS Puntang.
Just fill ballast tanks ASAP while fishtailing
I thought one of the two only US navy’s Cold War submarines ever sunk was caused by being hit by it’s own torpedo? I think it was called the USS scorpion
This is horrible, but that is such a satisfying thump 0:52
