IF I remember correctly, the typical US Fleet Boat carried 24 torpedoes; but Much before 1943, the Mark 14 torpedo was hugely UN-reliable. The stuffed shirts at BuOrd insisted the magnetic exploder was The Thing - it wasn't. Look it up- it's quite a story.

The concept of submersible warfare as a whole seems pretty weird at first glance. Nations spending hundreds of millions of Dollars and train dozens of crew members just for a couple of well-placed torpedo hits is what makes the topic so interesting
Interesting how a strategically deployed battle ready submarine gets an edge and takes down the opposition with ease.

Ramage was awarded the MOH for that patrol. The boat I served on during the Vietnam era, was the BANG, ss385, commanded then by Anton Gallagher. Parche, ss384, was commanded by Ramage. Both were classmates at the Academy. They were on each other's 1st war patrol in early 1944. Gallagher's Bang sank four ships and was awarded the Navy Cross. Ramage good heartedly said, "I can do better," I guess he did. Gallagher was awarded four Navy Crosses during the war.

why do you think depth charges were invented? Submarines were crazy dangerous at first and basically nullified giant ships during WWI, and improved technology (snorkels etc.) made them even more dangerous in WW2. If Turing and his team of Polish civilians hadn't cracked the Enigma code then Germany would have sank way more ships (and still lost the war but im just saying submarines were feared by all)
Do more ww2 stuff please I love it

I love a good Sub movie- my dad hunted Soviet subs in the Cuban Missile Crisis back in the day. Down the Throat shot was perfected by: Clark Gable as Cmdr. 'Rich' Richardson in the Hollywood 1958 classic " Run Silent Run Deep". It was based on the 1955 novel of the same name by Commander (later Captain) Edward L. Beach Jr. Burt Lancaster might have played Sam Dealey. Don Rickles first movie appearance.
Amazing!

Well to be fire, being a US sub in 1944 is like changing the game settings to "easy"
Days when soldiers stop feeding their government's greed, that would be days of peace..
Holy smokes. Youd think that a convoy would be able to rescue at least some of 2 500 guys, ir that some might survive on life boats or whatever long enough to be rescued. But I guess with the other ships all being lit up they didn't have a chance. So sad.

troop ships are packed tight, getting hit like that and a stampede. Lot of chokepoints. First two trops flooded the majority of the ship making it even harder, then came that 3rd hit sealing their fates. Only top deck survivors or people close to hatches.
Two types of ships. 1. Submarines 2. Targets
Nice video.
14 hits out of 19 torpedoes fired, which was very impressive for a WW2 submarine.

Japan depended on night optics, very few ships had radar. Also, convoys got the crappy escorts because it was considered a second rate job. Night surface attacks were common. Subs are very small, narrow and hard to spot.

You would be surprised how many times US subs pulled that sort of thing off in WWII. In most cases the Japanese escorts were firing heavily, only the US sub to dodge enemy fire so well that they could not score any hits. American subs may not have sunk as many ships as the U-Boats, but after the war, everyone agreed they had much more dramatic victories.
