H1MIN: UP AA ROCKET Mk1
Ғылым және технология
An unusual anti-aircraft weapon at the beginning of WW2 was the wire-barrage rocket. The British Royal Navy had these on ships such as the HMS Hood and HMS King George V. Intended as an AA close range deterrent, it ultimately had limited use and effect. By the end of 1941 they were replaced with more reliable guns, but it was interesting to see rocket launchers so early on Naval ships.

It's a shame that all the cool ideas are impractical

It's what happens when smart people at desks design weapons (engineers and scientists), not the right people (people on the field with knowledge and sense of warfare). Ideally, the people that actually fight should suggest ideas, and the scientists and engineers at the desks should use their knowledge to help make the soldiers' suggestions a reality, not the other way around. Sorry for commenting this multiple times; it's just an important point that needs to be emphasized.

Brits already got land-based UP 3in AA rockets with the world's first proximity fuze - photoelectric Pistol 710, and it got explosive mass instead of cable. They were put into real combat against German bombers.
Good way to start the year, love the concept behind it and sounds like something out of Star Wars, still cool to hear about.

Great video. Merchantmen were armed with similar devices. Prevented attacking planes from flying directly over the target as a rocket and wire were fired straight up from the deck.
Fun fact these rockets also tested the first radio proximity fuse in June 1940 Unlike artillery, the rockets have very little spin so the electronics didn't have to be as resistant to g-forces in the later artillery developed versions (late 41)

Didn't the Japanese also use some sort of AA rocket launcher on their carriers later in the war? I think it's called a 28 Tube AA Rocket Launcher. I can't really find much information about this weapon but Wikipedia says it was used on the Unryū class.

I mean, if you force the attacking aircraft to change course to avoid the barrage and it thwarts their attack run, you've still succeeded in the goal of protecting the ship. However, when the ship itself comes at risk from the mines blowing back as happened during the demonstration with Churchill, and you have other options for AA weapons that actually just, you know, destroy the aircraft outright, you can see why the UP didn't last long.
_Noice. And _*_Happy New Year!!_*

To be honest. I think it might be useful in avoiding kamikaze attacks. It forces the planes to change trajectory therefore easier to anticipate
I mean so many of these things you have on the channel seem like such an amazing idea like it sounds like it should be so effective and even that anti bomber bomb from the Japanese
