H1MIN: MONICA VS. FLENSBURG RADAR

Ғылым және технология

During the WW2 RAF night bombing campaign over Europe, technology was created to detect and counter attack aircraft in the dark. With these developments came interesting advancements in electronic warfare and night fighting.
This video covers the creation of the Monica radar by the RAF and the German use of Flensburg radar to counter it. The capture of an intact Junkers 88 G-1 provided useful intelligence that saved many Allied air crews.

    There's a lot more to this story. After the Monica was compromised, the British started to mount it on the Mosquito night fighters. The idea was to mimic the defenseless bomber, to bait German night fighters into following them. The Mosquitos would then lead them away from bombers (good luck catching the Mosquito), and skilled pilots would even let the German fighter close the distance and attempt to make a wide 360 turn to get on its tail. This was known as the "Whiting manoeuvre"

    A bit of extra info: FuG 227 „Flensburg“ was made by Siemens and was a passive Radar. There were also nightfighters equipped with the FuG 220 „Lichtenstein" SN-2-Radar made by Telefunken which was an active radar. It was an improved version with a lower frequency which had to be altered as Allied forces found out about the German frequencies through the German ground radar station "Würzburg" and disrupted Germany radars with the radar countermeasure chaff for weeks until the new SN-2 was deployed. It was much more resilient to chaff and brought nightfighters more reliably to their targets.

  • @richardvernon317

    @richardvernon317

    Ай бұрын

    Yep until the British used Rope Window which Jammed SN-2 just as well as normal Window screwed up the original Lichtenstein. The British were aware that a new radar was about as the number of Contacts on their Serrate equipped Mosquitos looking for standard Lichtenstein radar equipped night fighters dropped off a Cliff in May / June 1944. In the July they found out why.

    its funny how often accidentally landing on an enemy airfield and thus giving away an advanced piece of secret technology seemed to happen in WW2. it happened with both the 109 and the spitfire, but there are other examples too.

  • @gronthgronth2628

    @gronthgronth2628

    i always doubt the "accidental" part of such landings. Lets see, the guy here would have to completely loose orientation, in a starless night, with no moon, accidentally cross the sea, then accidentally find an airfield in the middle of nowhere, missing all the AA sentries and other planes, and accidentally either not realise that he has no radio-frequency for it, or ignore the fact that if frequency found, the speaker on the other side speaks english or at best mediocre german. See, imo it was just the case of a crew that was fed up with all the shit going on in their land/world ;)

  • @bigglesworth526

    @bigglesworth526

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@gronthgronth2628 probably true that a some were like that lol. however i think you under-estimate just how easy it was to become disorrientated at the time. you mentioned not having the stars or moon (which isnt exactly a rare thing). if you arent very familiar with the geography (or sight is limited) its easy to mistake one town/coastline etc for another, normandy has white cliffs too after all. that being said, it was often the case that they were damaged or running low on fuel so just landed at the first airfield they could find and hope for the best.

    Maybe check the animation of the bombs dropping at the end of the video. I believe that they dropped in a predefined sequence from different parts of the bomb-bay, so that the remaining bombs didn't affect the plane's centre of gravity. Dropping from the front to the back as in the video would have caused the plane to pitch up and stall/crash.
