H1MIN: LSM(R) U.S. NAVY ROCKET SHIPS
Ғылым және технология
The LSM(R) was the U.S. Navy’s introduction of a new class of rocket support ship in late WW2. Modified from existing landing ships, it was an interim design to provide heavier inshore bombardment to support amphibious landings.
The evolution of rocketry design was also interesting with innovations from engineers at Caltech. (California Institute of Technology)

Engineers came with list of possible realized innovations: -20mm remote controlled autocannon cannot with horizontal and vertical stabilization and possiblity to choose from 2 types of ammo (you no need to exit from tank to do that); -change position of driver to the special rotating capsule, connected to turret and another seemingly good, but never realized before technologies. @@timg2088 you can't just use different words and call it a quote. "Late jn the war" after several decisive and costly battles, and the pivotal battle of Midway. The war after that was a brutal finishing move, and everyone including Japanese high command knew the war was lost. They no longer had the materials to conduct new aircraft design and production while also maintaining war time productions. That absolutely counts as late in the war, and the central point that the Japanese were not savage tribals who couldn't identify a weapon as simple and recognized as a missile is still solid. That's such a lame joke tbh.

Firing that salvo for the first time must have been terrifying for the crew. And also each additional salvo. And also just being on a lightly armored ship packed to the gills with rockets.

Awesome video. In the 60's, one LSMR ,The USS Elk River was converted and used in the "man in the sea" project, for the United States Navy. After that it was used primarily as a Saturation diver school for highly qualified Navy divers. During its man in the sea and Saturation diver phase it was no longer considered The USS Elk River, but designated DTV Elk River IX501. (DTV is the abbreviation for Diver Training Vessel and IX is the ships classification - Expiramental? It was showcased on a few documentaries, TV shows and even one complete episode of The Bionic Woman. Sadly the ' Moose Creek" (what some of the Elk River sailors called the ship) found her Forever resting place, in the Pacific Ocean.

Three of the later class LSMR's went to Vietnam, and used for fire support. They were the USS Clarion River, White River and ST Francis River.
I thought you already did this one. Turns out this is the bigger sister to the LCT(R), which is the one you did previously. Interesting to see this one having angle-adjustable rockets while the other one doesn't.

@@divebombexpert2619 those yankees started planes with shotgun shells (coffman engine starter) Gravity fed rockets is nothing compared to that (the gravity feeding system) Btw, i do realise why the coffman starter was used, its compact, lightweight, effective. Only downside is having to reload the cartridge before starting

This channel takes it's time to make quality content, the others just make many videos to make money easy and fast. I would associate youtube nowadays (majority of it) with the quote "If I Had More Time, I Would Have Written a Shorter Letter" from Blaise Pascal.
This channel is criminally underrated
This ship was on Call of Duty World at War too! In the “Little Resistance” Peleliu landing level, you can call rocket strikes on Japanese bunkers. Really loved to spam it on some poor Japanese riflemen. Haha

Another amazing video. Thank you.
Amazing video!
Your videos are always so great man!
I saw one of these ships when it visited the US Naval Base in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I was in the 5th or 6th grade. This would have been around 1953. The pier was a short walk from the school and our PE teacher, a Marine, would sometimes take us to look at ships and sometimes go aboard. Sometimes we’d get ice cream. An avid sci- fi reader at the time, when I heard “rocket ship” I got really excited, only to be disappointed when I saw the real thing. Of course, none of the launchers were loaded. I remember seeing a submarine and perhaps a destroyer on other outings. The Navy shared the airfield on the north side of the base with the civilian airlines. I think we only got one outing to the airfield the 4 years I was there.
Love your channel man, yours along with others remind me of the good ole days of the military history channel. When it’s name actually made sense that is.
Awsome as always!

Really good video as always thank you! It is also worth noting, that while firing a salvo the ship basically had to be moving at flank speed forward, to prevent the salvo's recoil propelling it backwards

Richard here: I served as Comm Officer on the USS Clarion River (LSMR 409) from July 65 to January 67. This class LSMR had 8 trainable rocket launchers that could fire 2 rockets every 4 seconds. We shot 3 range rockets: 2500, 5000 and 10,000 yard rockets. We put the ship back in commission at Hunters Point in mid '65', and after training in California, went to our new homeport of Yokosuka, Japan. Most of '66' was spent on the gun-line in Vietnam. Our crew was 7 officers and 130 enlisted.

I remember using these like one time playing Battlestations Pacific and they were fucking amazing at destroying bases.
I always wondered about these things ever sine I've seen them in World at War and in several ww2 books

Dude love your channel! You've got high quality animations, and visuals that explain many interesting topics. One critique to help others find your channel would be to change your video thumbnails so that it isnt covered by a Giant Yellow H1MIN. I know that's your channel logo, but it hides your gorgeous renderings, and people probably glance over it, because a yellow square looks rather boring. Thumbnails mean a lot, so it could help. Just my 2 cents, not a youtuber, just my observations as a viewer. Keep up the great content!
The US Navy has recognized it deficient in firepower for current amphibious operations. They have considered bringing back the Battleship or the 1990s Arsenal Ship concept. I believe a modernized LSM(R) would be perfect for the role.
Gives me world at war flashback there
Great channel, good work. I wonder if those crews of those ships had protected equipments against the thick smoke produced by the rockets during a salvo?
