STORYLINE:
US Marine and Army units swept through Baghdad on Wednesday, seizing or destroying buildings that once housed some of Saddam's most feared security forces.
Marine tanks rolled into the commercial center, greeted by people cheering and waving white flags.
In Fardos Square, in the east of the city, marines searched the Palestine Hotel - home to the international press corps based in Baghdad.
Two journalists based there were killed yesterday when a U-S tank fired at the hotel - the military said they had come under sniper fire from the building.

US Forces included 2nd Marine Div (reinforced), other Marine units, Army 3rd and 4th Infantry divisions, plus 2 brigades each from 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions. It was no real contest, but many Iraqi units fought as best they could. Took 3 weeks to drive 270 miles to Baghdad. It was the last time the US Army and Marines have been deployed in all-out, contested maneuver warfare. Now, 20 years later, I suspect the Army is a little rusty. - Z @@souravkumarpandey6691

What year was this? I was only a child growing up in the 90s but I vividly remember these conflicts. Not so much 1991, but 1997-98 and the start of war in 2001-02....I assume this video is from the 2001-02 invasion where we actually took control of the country?

  • @wizzedcam

If you're remembering a war in the Middle East with U.S. involvement during the 90s then you're likely thinking of the Gulf War during Operation Desert Storm/Shield. This video was in 2003 during the invasion phase of the Iraq War, as Baghdad is the Iraqi capital. The war in Afghanistan started in 2001.

@winner trump No, not really. The invasion was in 2003. The insurgency was mostly between 2004 to 2006 (period of most American deaths) when Bush (republican) was president. Obama inauguration was in 2009. Obama pulling out the troops too early wasn't great, but he had nothing to do with the Iraq army and the mistaken invasion. Learn history my friend! Stop getting your information from crap/partisan websites.

Today is the anniversary of the occupation of our country... This same time and the same hour... I am from Iraq. I was there at that time. It was something beyond imagination. The sound was terrifying, and everyone had children crying. Everyone looked at each other. He did not know at what moment he would light the fire on his last night. The next morning, mothers were crying everywhere. There are those who bid farewell to their daughter, and there are those whose husband died, and blood decorates the place, and the smell of death and the mosque radio announces other lists of the names of the dead. We have not passed that day yet, and we hope to know what they convinced their communities during their invasion of us.

Along with Iraq’s alleged weapon of mass destruction, another justification for the invasion was the purported link between Saddam Hussein’s government and terrorist organizations, in particular Alqaeda. In that sense, the bush administration cast the Iraq war part of the border war on terrorism. America* spell it right.

He hauled ass the moment he heard our Tanks ! ... Let me add I don't know where this guys group was but we encountered a sh!t load of Resistance from the Iraqis granted it was full on all the way but when it was they hit us until most of them died kind of hard not to die ,up against nothing but human flesh against a M1A Tank 120mm Round ouch* we left a mark ! We had one tank get hit ,the reporter kept saying to people back home it was in the engine ,but it wasn't the engine engine is in the rear ! The Driver was hit he died a few days later! I couldn't believe those guys kept driving out of there position standing up and up where they could get hit ! I don't see it here but maybe in some other videos you can find a tank with sandbags on it ... But what pissed us off was Syrian troops fighting in there Military's Uniforms !

I'm watching this in 2024, although I didn't agree with our politicians sending troops to Iraq to invade and take over Baghdad, I was behind them 100%. Thank you to the Marines, Soldiers, Air Force and Naval Pilots for risking their lives to end the tyranny of a brutal regime. Thanks to those military personnel who kept everything going on the FOB bases, the Air Force Bases, and the Naval Battleships and Aircraft Carriers. Your service will never be forgotten. To those American Servicemen and Servicewomen who lost their lives in the fight against terrorism, you're loved and never forgotten. To everyone in the United States Armed Forces, active, discharged, and retired. We love you all.
