Date of Travel: 3rd March 2020
Class of Travel: Solo Sleeper (Standard Class)
Cost of ticket: £135
Origin: London Paddington, United Kingdom (England)
Destination: Penzance, United Kingdom (England)
Rolling Stock: Class 57/Mk3
Other info:
Breakfast options included a bacon roll, a croissant and I think there was porridge as well.
The Penzance to London sleeper leaves Penzance at 21:45 and arrives into London Paddington at 05:04. Passengers with sleeper accommodation may remain on board until 06:45.
Seated passengers have access to a buffet car style counter service offering drinks and light refreshments. The on board lounge is only accessible for passengers with sleeper accommodation.
Upon arrival at Penzance, there is a sleeper lounge that passengers with sleeper accommodations may use. The lounge is similar, albeit smaller, than the one seen at London Paddington.

As someone who uses the Night Sleeper frequently between Penzance and London Paddington I though it should also point out that the both Paddington and Penzance both have first class lounges located at each station where you can enjoy a shower and tea/coffee amenities. Both are available included in your sleeper birth ticket* so if you should leave London Paddington (after using their lounge and shower) you are also free to enjoy Penzance's lounge and included shower etc. Note that depending on the number of people travelling and demand for the showers you are required to arrange a time slot. As of this point it can be done by arrangement with your carriage attendants for 'arrivals' although I believed for 'departure' its more first-come first-serve. *First class amenities are only available if you book a sleeper birth. They are not available to passengers travelling in the none sleeper section of the train (past the buffet and lounge car towards the front of the train). Although it should be mentioned that those travelling in this section do enjoy a 1st class "normal/day running" coach without the tea/coffee/biscuit freebies (although if you asked nicely I'm sure you will get some). For the COVID era, while the sleeper service itself may sometimes be running and in other not (please check before any bookings or if you have made bookings and GWR are not the fastest company to tell you they may owe you some money due to cancelled trains), while it is in operation a face mask is required while moving to/from your birth, while any none-sleeper section of the train and while ordering at the bar located in the lounge section (NB that the lounge area itself is not available for seating/consumption of food/beverages during the pandemic for your and others protection). You can remove your mask while in the toilets and your sleeping quarters. Also no showers are available for obvious heath reasons! A quick note about ticket prices... the sleeper birth is always a fixed price based on 2 options: Solo (the only available option during the pandemic) and Shared (cheaper but you will share the room with someone. If not specifically travelling with someone else at the time you made the booking you must be the same sex as the other person. Eg, if you booked a shared birth but are travelling alone and are male then you will be paired with another male, similarly if you are female. OFC you may get lucky and have no pairings at all and get the birth to yourself. It should also be noted that your paired person can get on at any stopping station, so you can be woken up at 3am by someone coming into your room. For this reason I always book Solo). Solo (at the time of writing this) is £80 on top of your ticket, keep in mind that train fairs at that time of night are very cheap so £135 one way is fairly decent and cheaper if the train fair ticket was booked in advance (as an advance ticket, read the rules because these tickets are not flexible!), although I doubt - unless you have a lot travel discounts or selecting a shared birth - you will get a fair PLUS a birth for £90. Anyway, enough wall of text! I highly recommend this service if you get the chance to enjoy. For a train (keep that in mind!) its very comfortable and enjoyable. Happy New Year to all.

My wife and I took this service from Plymouth up to Paddington as a great way to get to Heathrow at a leisurely pace for a 2pm flight a few years back. Just like Dylan found, this sleeper option was a hidden gem; an oasis of old-fashioned good service in a tacky world. Spotlessly clean, comfortable and ridiculously old-fashioned-romantic. We loved it - and wish we had a reason to do it again :-)

50 years ago I travelled every years on the Cornish Rivera to go eventually to st Ives surfing on the beach in the 60’s, my family were evacuated there in the way due to the London docs moving
I painted them inside and out, went to Penzance for the week to snag them before commissioned, nice to see them running 😂😂
What a brilliant way to start a holiday. Will definitely use this service, thanks for posting!
Great review; very thorough indeed! One thing I particularly like about this train is the pull down windows. It's so refreshing to stand by an open window in the morning when you wake up haha! Cheers, Mark.

I prefer the Lounge Cars on the Anglo-Scottish Caledonian Sleeper trains myself. At least they serve a full three-course meal (outside of the Corona Virus pandemic) whilst on the Night Riviera you can only buy drinks and snacks!
Another 5-Star effort, Dylan! As with many of the other commenters, I've come to really look forward to your videos each week. And, while I noticed one comment encouraging you to narrate, I have to say that I appreciate your decision to sub-title your work. This really allows for the full, visual appreciation of what your camera is capturing. Not to say that I'd object, should you ever opt to speak ~ but, your text is brief, to-the-point, adequately descriptive and effective. The occasional "face reveals" are fun, too! Always nice to know who's showing you around. Thanks so much!

Both the Great Western Railway, operating out of London Paddington, and the Great Central Railway, operating out of London Marylebone, had generous loading gauges. The Class 165 and 166 "Thames Turbo" commuter trains built by British Rail for suburban work out of Paddington and Marylebone took advantage of this fact, but their wide bodies mean that they lack "go anywhere" availability. Some careful gauging studies had to be undertaken before Class 166 units were cleared to operate along the former Southern Railway route between Cosham and Brighton to ensure they didn't foul the edges of curved station platforms.

Hello There, this looks very nice, I am glad you had a decent experience, great video by the way! Cheers Peter :)
Lots to say here Dylan: No music - excellent, just the ambient soundtrack. Subtitles were informative and not overdone or gimmicky. A forensic examination of facilities on board Praise for the crew and the company seems well deserved. This looks like the future of travel - CO2 a better option. The drive is awful. (we did the overnight - 24 hours from Tampa Fla to New York - cramped but fun. and the car train from Nice to Calais brilliant, though now no more) Seems sleeper trains are catching on, throughout Europe. Thanks a lot. Very nicely done. (You missed the statue of Brunel on Paddington Station)

Dylan, I have to agree with your comparison between refurbished Mark 3 sleepers and the Mark 5s on the Caledonian Sleeper. The Mark 3 looks cosier and the table is much sturdier. The ladder to the upper berth is quite innovatively designed - pity we didn't have a similar design on our sleepers downunder - although I could see this as part of a renovation thought for future upgrades. Enjoying watching both your videos and those of our Canadian friend (DownieLive). Makes up for being stuck at home during Melbourne's second lockdown due to the second wave of COVID19. Keep them coming and stay safe and well yourself in sunny Inverness.

You still can, thanks to Great Western Railway! I travelled down from Paddington to Penzance on a Friday in December and the train (two seated carriages, a lounge car and four sleeping carriages) was far from full. As Dylan Bowes demonstrates, there is an intercommunicating door between adjacent compartments which is ideal if four people are travelling together as a family group.
Thank you so much for this info! I am planning a Penzance to Paddington overnight train trip next year and this is helpful. Seems like you had a very smooth ride.

I wouldn't have thought the journey time was long enough to bother with a sleeper. Though having said that I used to regularly travel from London to Aberystwyth which takes a similar time and did once do it on a through train. The new Night Riviera sleeper cabin is stunning. I'm so looking forward to be on this solo occupant berth in Aug 2021. I have given up on the Caledonian sleeper...
