Amtrak New York to Los Angeles in a Roomette

The first of a new series of videos where I show you how you'd go about taking a long distance train trip which requires you to take 2 or more trains. In the first of these videos, I show you how to travel from New York to Los Angeles via Chicago with Amtrak.

Other info:
Please note that if you want to connect from the Cardinal to the Texas Eagle, then an overnight layover in Chicago is required. You will need to take the Lake Shore Limited if you want to connect straight onto the Texas Eagle to Los Angeles.
You could also travel from New York to Los Angeles via New Orleans by taking the City of New Orleans followed by the Sunset Limited.
If you want to do the trip that I've shown you in reverse (ie Los Angeles to New York) then just apply what I've shown you in the video backwards.

My wife and I did this but we went from DC to San Francisco and it was life changing. Sleeper Car is a must. We brought a laptop filled with movies & tv shows, I brought my switch and ps4 with portable screen. That’s all we needed. Scenery was amazing, California was awesome, we spent a week and returned home. We will do this again. It’s expensive, but stress free unlike flying. Just bring your patience and enjoy.

When I graduated nursing school, I celebrated by going across the country to Seattle via Amtrak. I was dirt poor at the time, so I went by coach, and all I had to eat was a loaf of bread and peanut butter. By the time I got to Seattle, it had been over 3 days since I had laid down, had a shower, or a hot meal. Sinking into the bed after arriving at the hotel was the most heavenly feeling in the world. I'll never do a trip that long in coach again, but I definitely don't regret doing it. The most beautiful scenery is in Glacier National Park (MT), New River Gorge (WV), and Colorado. The mountains in Northern California were gorgeous too. To quote Mulder from X-Files, "You haven't seen this country until you've seen it from a train."

It's so so nice ... just sit back and take it all in. I've been fortunate enough to have traveled all the long distance routes across Amtrak's map. Compared to air travel, traveling by train is an entirely different experience. Both get you A-to-B, however train travel allows so much more enrichment to enter the picture. To begin with the relaxation one can experience on board a long distance train is unlike anything else. The motion of the train induces a wonderful baseline that all else is presented upon. Enjoying the scenery pass by in 360° while sitting in the lounge car is truly one of the most enjoyable and relaxing things in the world. Meeting fellow travelers is always a treat. When boarding and beginning a long distance route, it's fascinating slowly encountering the others on board because essentially you're all together for the next two to three days. Sleeping on the train is extraordinary, ... nothing like it. On board dining is interesting. Obviously it's not remotely a high end restaurant, but they do well in the modest kitchen from which they have to work. It’s not about the quality of the food, hell it's just cool that you've even got a dining option on board. Don't worry if the train is running somewhat late, it's quite common. On rails there's only one way thru, they'll get you there just don't sweat the delays. It's just wonderful, ... no hectic airport lines, no matter what, you're going to arrive at your destination and all you have to do is take it all in.

Rail travel in the US isn't the greatest because 90% of the railroad network is privately owned by the freight train companies, and they give freight trains priority. So if you're on a tight schedule, maybe look at other options. But if you're on a vacation, then who cares, the slower the better, that's the best way to see the country, and you can see things that you either won't or can't see in a car/bus/plane

Some things to consider: 1) When you book in advance, the times of departure and arrival may change. Always recheck within a couple of weeks of your trip. 2) Crews change at different points in the trip. This can result in the dining car closing. 3) It is not uncommon for dining cars to run out of some food and drink. Plan ahead by bringing some energy bars and water. 4) The trains sometimes run out of toilet paper. Bring sanitary wipes with you. 5) The door locks on roomettes are sometimes broken. Don’t leave valuables (wallet, phone, laptop, etc.) in your compartment as they can grow legs of their own. Locking your door is not a guarantee that your things can be left unattended. Don’t leave your passport there either. Carry your medications with you.

I am Canadian and wanted to ride an AMTRAK train for years. Last year 2019, I had the chance to ride them at long last. I took the AMTRAK train from Las Vegas to Elk Grove, CA. There was no direct train to that destination. I boarded an AMTRAK bus from Las Vegas to Bakersfield. Then an AMTRAK train from Bakersfield to Stockton, CA. Then another AMTRAK bus from Stockton to Elk Grove. It was more than 12 hours, but it was quite an experience and comfortable ride instead of driving. Booked the one-way economy ticket 4 months in advance and it was only around US$120. I will ride that train again if given another chance, perhaps after this worldwide health crisis of COVID-19.

In 1979 I was 13 and me and my family move from central California to Dubois Pennsylvania. We rode by Bus. It took us six days and seven nights. I remember stopping at all of the great cities along the way and a lot of beautiful scenery to take in. I remember this one dear sweet lady who was deaf and read lips. We communicated back and forth the whole trip! I remember both of us crying when we had to part ways. Then their was this strange lady who had a colored sponge setting on top of her head and changed it to a different color each time we entered a different state. Don't know what that was all about! Seeing things like big Skyscrapers in the big cities and the big Arch in St. Louis was amazing! One of the highlights was passing by Lake Michigan. I thought it was the ocean which I had never seen before! It was an experience I'll never forget!

This brings back happy memories of me crisscrossing the USA with Amtrak in 2016. Your comment about the trains being late is correct. I had to spend a day in Kansas City due to a late train and a missed connection. Then I missed the connection in Albany for a local train to the town of Hudson. The guard on the train was so kind, he called the driver and then told me to stay on the train. That train was going through Hudson on its way to New York City and they made a special stop for me to get off. It was much to the amusement of the small number of people waiting at the station as they opened one of the doors, put out the small set of yellow steps and a tourist stepped off the train. Thank you Amtrak.

Planes don't count; you're strapped into a seat for a few hours and everything is the same distance from everything else. I hope that it's safe to travel next August, when I have plans to take the train from Emeryville (San Francisco) to Washington DC. It will be my fourth long-distance trip, as I've gone to Montreal, Detroit, and Chicago on previous trips. Always loved trains. Took one long Amtrak trip six years ago, starting in Memphis (I flew there) on the City of New Orleans (just had to ride that train!), going to Chicago. Rather than taking the Southwest Chief, I decided to take the Empire Builder to Portland, Oregon, and the Coast Starlight back to Los Angeles (my home). What fun! The roomettes are tiny, but the beds are comfortable even for a 6' 3" fellow like me. Food was far better than I expected too. Do heed Dylan's warning, however. You will most likely not arrive at your destination on time. For me, I had planned a 3-hour layover in Portland - maybe get a massage while I waited. No way! By the time we made it to Spokane the train was more than 3 hours later already! Not to worry, Amtrak took eight of us passengers by bus down to Klamath Falls where we caught the Coast Starlight. By the way, the Coast Starlight still had its "parlor car" back then. What a shame it is no longer included on the route.

If you have the time, I would strongly recommend people do this at least once in their life. Maybe not all the across the US, as I think that may be a 3 day trip (although if you have the time and money, why not). But it certainly is a different experience. I would say though, if you are going to be on the train for overnight, it might be worth paying for the rommette. I took one train from Chicago to NYC and that was about 20 hours (left Chicago around 930pm CT) and arrived around 6pm the next day, and wish I had gotten a roomette instead of being cheap and paying $100 for a coach seat (I was traveling with someone else, and a roomette would have been $600 for both of us, each way). What really made the coach seat undesireable I guess was that the person behind us was on the phone pretty much throughout the night. If it wasn't for that person, the coach seat would have been tolerable but I wanted to sleep and maybe got 4 hours of sleep during the entire 20 hour ride. Yes you can fly, and if you're in a rush, and more concerned about getting there than the journey, then fly, but if you have time, and want to see parts of the country, this is a good way to do it. You can walk around versus a bus (which may be cheaper, but you can't really walk around). My only gripe is that out of the 5 last Amtrak train rides I can recall over the past few years, 4 of them were late by at least 30 minutes if not more (one was about an hour late getting back to Chicago from St. Louis).

Sadly, train travel in the US is a pathetic joke compared to most other countries like Japan. The number one reason is that Amtrak doesn't own any of the track it uses outside of the D.C. to Boston route. So that means they have lease agreements with the freight train companies to use their track, thus given the lowest priority making Amtrak horribly unreliable and extremely delayed, sometimes as much as 24 hours. While I absolutely love train travel, it's cheaper, faster and easier to either get a rental car or fly. Amtrak has gone to shit unfortunately in recent years as fares have shot up but service has plumeted. If you're looking for that cross country by train experience and don't really care about delays, layovers and poor customer service, then Amtrak is the way to go. In fact, Amtrak is the only way you can travel by train cross country legally. I'd love to see Amtrak services go back to what they used to be 15 years ago when things were actually pretty good. All in all, I would say that going coast to coast via Amtrak is an experience all its own regardless of anything else and the money sent is worth it in the end. Great video, maybe do a D.C. to San Francisco via the California Zephyr from Chicago for the next one.

Having taken the Zephyr less than a decade ago I'd say customer service was fine, but the dining room food was mostly poor. Better to go in with low expectations regarding food.

Idk. I traveled from Dallas To Norfolk VA, via D.C. back in 1994 and the customer service was pretty horrible. I Chicago I got robbed at an ATM inside the station, had to cancel my debit card and Credit cards, so I was stuck penniless the remainder of my trip. That was the first leg. Fortunately, a waiter in the dining car took pity upon me and made sure I had dinner that first night, and a honey bun for breakfast. He was awesome. I rode in a regular seat and it was the equivalent on a Greyhound bus, but slower and smellier as the car behind the one I was assigned was the smoking car. The attendant was constantly spraying Lysol to smother the cigarette stink. I was mesmerized going thru the Appalachian mountains, it was February so there was still snow on the ground and huge sheets of ice along the river. I think the most negative part of my trip outside of being robbed, was seeing the plight and bleakness that train tracks take you thru. The amount of pollution, and poverty in the bigger cities like Dallas, St. Louis, Chicago and D.C., against the back drop of Christmas tree farms, and nature at its best left me a little empty inside. But as you can see at 13:30 these are the types of people that could give two shits about others. How dare that heifer think it’s her right to put her disgusting feet on the WINDOW? What a spoiled POS. I imagine she’s a super spreader these days refusing to wear a mask because she can’t stand the smell of her own breath.

What strikes me as the biggest difference between rail travel in Europe vs U.S. is that in Europe you can quite easily book tickets (1st class [not anywhere NEAR as expensive as in the U.S.] as well sleepers) between a long string of large cities with several day stays in each city, while long distance train travel in the U.S. does not allow for that. If you're taking the Zephyr, for instance, from Chicago to SF in a sleeper, you can't schedule a several day visit to Denver, and then re-board for SF. More flexible ticketing would go a long way to increasing train travel in the U.S. IMHO. And would be great for the economies of the smaller cities in the interior of our Country.

@@valerief1231 SO TRUE about the bleakness one sees during U.S. train travel. And you rationalize the trackside ugliness in your head as "well, it's the most devalued real estate everywhere," but then traveling by rail in other countries you just don't see the same piles of refuse along the tracks, the abandoned vehicles, endless factory ruins, etc.. Even in relatively poor former Eastern Bloc Euro countries the area alongside rails is kept basically neat ( grass cut, no weedy thickets). Just feels like U.S. long distance train service has forever been riding on the edge of extinction.

This brings back memories. I use to go between CA and NY as a teen in coach. Being strapped on money, I would bring some food, music and books with me (cell phones weren't as prominent yet). Usually had one of those crappy coach meals at some point, and in Albuquerque I'd grab some burritos from a lunch truck. Then treat myself walking around exploring Chicago before the last haul to Buffalo. Amtrak knows it's stuff, they will get you to your destination (tho no guarantee on time), despite any acts of god. Met so many people while we enjoying the scenery. This gets me in the mood to do it again.

When I was 13 yo in 1959, my family did this trip. From Seattle to NY; it took a total of three days on two trains. After 60 yars of advances in technology, it now takes four days, proving the theory of continental drift. Today, I'd go postal if I had to live out of suitcase in a roomette for four days. For $949, I think I could fly 1st class. If I want to see America close up (and I have), I'd drive it.

I took the Coast Starlight from L.A. to Seattle and absolutely loved the experience. AMTRAK employees are the most underated employees of any travel service. I took the trip before Covid, and I ate in the dinning car (coach) with different people each evening. It was so amazing. The food in the dinning car is excellent. Was great being able to stop along the way and get off and spend a day or two in a city and then hop on the next train going my way. Ah the grand dining car was great as well and sharing a dining table with another traveler. Keep thinking I'd like to try Amtrak for another travel adventure.

Dylan, I did the L.A. to NYC roundtrip in 2017 with the Southwest Chief and Lakeshore Limited. The scenery alone is fabulous and worth the money, watching as it evolves from the magnificent desert Southwest to lushly forested upstate New York. But I did not sleep well at all in the roomette, with so much random jolting and jostling and noise from train motion. That got miserable! In between those train rides I did a pair of transatlantic sailings aboard Queen Mary 2, including one through a major storm with lots of ship motion, and on QM2 I slept very soundly. Go figure! This overall adventure took me from the central coast of California to Florence in Italy using only trains and a ship, no airplanes, just like my ancestors did in 1928.

Amtrak has been subsidized by the government forever. I'm sure there probably was a time it was sovereign and profitable, but hasn't been for quite a while. Pricing itself to be profitable is next to impossible with cheaper, faster, more reliable, more available air travel available. European countries are in the sweet spot for rail travel where the US is probably always going to be better served by air travel (until they price themselves out of the market in the way of fees and add on costs that drive up the actual cost you pay). Having said that, I've take the southwest chief no fewer than 20 times in my lifetime (and the Zephyr 2 or 3 times) and I've learned to enjoy it for what it is. When they finally added outlets to every seat (far too late, imho, but glad for it now), it gave us more options for things to do with our downtime. When I was much younger, your only options were the books you brought, or the few hours you laptop would give you before needing charged (by sharing an outlet in the club car). Now you can easily charge your phones and other handheld entertainment devices and be powered up for the entire trip. You can't blame the staff too much for what generally feels like tired ambivalence to outright abrupt rudeness, it's got to be a hard gig and travelers can be quite rude too. But I have found that if you go out of your way to be nice, courteous, and respectful, you can get it back to the staff you interact with. You will likely never get to where you are going on time, it's never happened once that I can recall in all the trips I've taken. But, if time isn't of the essence, it's a great way to see the US, without having to do the driving. Most cities don't let the rails pass through the nice neighborhoods or they passed through the city centers when those cities were newer, now, most of the time, you see the neglect of the areas around the old rail lines and it's a little sad. The reward is the beauty of all the varying geographies of the central US (in the case of the Southwest Chief). I think every person who enjoys travel even a little bit, should try the train at least twice... I can guarantee that it will not be luxurious, or easy, but it will be memorable.
