Many dogs just get away for a little playtime. But our dog came back home a week later bedraggled and full of burrs. We had looked for her everywhere calling her name down every country road. But nowhere to be found. So glad she found her way back home. I think she was glad and was never going to escape again. It must have been awful... She looked so glad to be home. (And back then no chip.)

The whole story never made sense but he's such a good dog, well trained but when he escapes he's gone for a couple days lol I put my phone number on his collar so if someone does end up picking him up hopefully they are honest and give him back but other than that I'm very careful so he can't escape

Back when I lived at home, my mom came home one morning to find a large pitbull on the porch. She was cautious only because it was a new dog, not because of the breed...we've owned pitbulls our whole lives. She said it eventually sat up and wagged its tail at her like it knew her, so she got out of the car and it greeted her. She told us about it when she got in, and I curiously peeked out the front door. Yep, he was still there, laying at the edge of the porch again as though waiting for someone else to come home. He wasn't a dog but a large puppy. And my goodness was he beautiful. Brown and white fur, greenish eyes, light red nose...he was gorgeous. We first tried ignoring him after that, but the boy just went to the back of the porch and fell asleep like he lived there! After that audacity, I gave up trying to ignore him and just gave him some food and water. I really wanted to keep him but we already also owned two dogs. So, we took him to our local shelter. They'd be able to check for a microchip or just keep him in case his owner never turned up. As we were pulling in, someone else asked eagerly if we were getting rid of him, someone that just got done dropping off an animal (that section is only for drop-offs). I said he wasn't ours and maybe I'm being super cautious but beautiful dogs like that can be made ugly with dog fighting or making them breed all the time. I knew I couldn't just post pictures of the dog online as everyone would say its theirs, so the shelter felt like the safest way to ensure he got back to whom he belonged to or at least was adopted out to a good home. But damn...if we had even one less dog, I probably would've adopted him out myself if no one claimed him. I wasn't supposed to get attached but he was just so darn friendly and it makes you feel special when an animal decides, yep, I'm going to just hang out with you guys and not go away 😂.

There was a husky that lived about half a km from my parents place, it kept opening the windows and escaping so it could kill pet animals on my parents land. It was lucky to avoid being shot or put down. The owners said they just couldn't stop it escaping so I convinced them rehoming the dog that they clearly couldn't look after was better than it getting shot.

I found a dog this same way! Owners came down from another city to spend time with family for a few days, dog escaped because he was too darn smart (two others did not), and took off exploring. Completely lost his bearings. Met him early morning like 8am, walked for like 2 hours trying to find "home," held him an hour, spent all day driving around shelters (pet free apt), totaling over 5 hours... Finally one took him 10 minutes before closing at 5pm on the grounds THAT I POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA (3 HOURS now 11pm at night, dinner, driving) lol to find the owner. Glad they had fliers of where/websites to post. 2am she found my post but couldn't contact me. 7am she started driving from the other city. Picked up her dog (with proof) and sent me a thank you before the shelter could even let me know around 10am. Took down all the posts (another HOUR.) So much for my day off (at least I wasn't working) but still glad I did.

I found a malamute in 1980 that Had been hit by a car. I already owned another one. I took her to the emergency vet to get her taken care of. Turned out she had a crushed pelvis which could not be repaired. I ended up adopting her. The vet figured she was about a year old when I found her. She lived to be 12 years old and her bum right rear leg never slowed her down for a minute, even on backpacking trips. She was a wonderful dog and was always grateful for her new life.
