Northern England here. Fish, chips and mushy peas. Condiments be - Salt, vinegar and tartar sauce. Firstly before tucking in, evenly sprinkle vinegar over the fish, chips and mushy peas. Secondly sprinkle some salt. The vinegar first so the salt sticks to the vinigar. Use your knife and fork in conjunction with one another and put one chip and a little of the fish and mushy peas onto the fork, along with the tartar sauce. You could also eat the fish chips and peas on a buttered doorstop of a slice of white bread. It is how I enjoy this great British dish!

As an Englishman this was all just deeply upsetting... First off, tartar sauce can be found everywhere in England. Those Yorkshires looked horrific. Its genuinely impressive that you managed to make a Yorkshire pudding look unappealing. The hint as to what type of potato you have with a *roast* is in the name *roast*. Why would you be choosing lumpy mash instead? Chips looked dead and apparently my guy doesn’t even know how to make a shepherds pie. Jesus, theres a reason he could only open an “english” pub on that side of he Atlantic. This is all just too much

What kind of self respecting englishman has the nerve to call that a sunday dinner? You cant just put a yorkie on a plate and call it a traditional roast. Roast potatoes are the best bit of a sunday dinner and there isnt one in sight! Beef cabbage, mash and a yorkshire pudding, thats the roast id expect if i was in the ICU and couldnt digest solids. A sunday roast AS A MINIMUM should have peas, carrots roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding and cauliflower cheese, with a good amount of colmans mustard. Parsnips, swede and sprouts are optional extras. Try the Traditional Yorkshire way doing a Yorkshire Pudding. Done in a medium or small size loaf tin. Weigh equal amounts of eggs, plain flour and milk, sprinkle of salt, in the oven at 200 degrees C until risen and golden brown on the top. Prepare onion and meat gravy (you can have some beef strips in there if you want), poured on the top the pudding. This is normally a starter btw.

I see fish and chips served as an eat in experience in pubs a lot. It definitely isn't always fast food in england

Why are so many people commenting so unkind? Is it just the time we are in right now? Why can we not just enjoy and appreciate a little light in these times ❤️

Roast potatoes should be with the roast beef, some horseradish sauce or English mustard. Thicker gravy. The sheppards pie the mash is not spooned on its put on then it covers the meat then fluffed up and put in the over to go crispy

To the woman who said " i travel to england all the time and this is the best fish n chips i've ever had" you clearly have not had it from many places in england, best i've ever had is Mevagissey Cornwall, it's a working fishing village and they cook the fish that was caught that morning, so it was literally flapping around a couple hours ago before you're eating it.

but in traditional chip shops they rarely used beer batter....cos it added alot to the overheads....it was usually made with water.

Chips crispy on the outside, what sort of chippy sells them like that, certainly none in Donny that I know of. Leftover Yorkshire's with jam on a Sunday were a must when I was a kid
