Guy Aoki vs. Sarah Silverman on “Politically Incorrect”

Broadcast date: August 23, 2001 (taped the previous day)
The fiercest debate in the history of this ABC Bill Maher talk show.To see the Silverman joke that caused the controversy and her previous appearance on “Politically Incorrect” where she attacked Aoki--which led to this debate with him--watch the “History of MANAA” video.
• History of Media Actio...
Check out our website www.manaa.org and newsletter website www.newsletter....
History behind this episode:
July 11, 2001: Comedian Sarah Silverman uses the racial slur “chink” on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien.” Although MANAA understands the context of the joke, it isn’t appropriate to use such a hateful word to get laughs.
July 17: The Associated Press picks up the story.
July 18: MANAA’s Founding President Guy Aoki speaks with Silverman’s manager Geoff Cheddy, who wants to send a letter Silverman has written Aoki.
July 19: Reuters runs Silverman’s response.
July 20: Aoki asks Cheddy why he didn’t send Silverman’s letter (Cheddy admits he had her re-write it after talking to him). It’s finally sent on July 23. Silverman says she appreciates the work Aoki does and feels the incident “should not make us enemies.” Aoki responds that day agreeing. She doesn’t respond. Instead…
July 26: Silverman goes on Bill Maher’s “Politically Incorrect” (her manager Brad Grey was co-producer of show) to blast Aoki for chastising her for using the joke. The episode features conservative commentator Tucker Carlson and comedian Howie Mandel who make light of the situation, and host Bill Maher is openly hostile to Aoki and MANAA saying they’re expressing “fake pain.”
July 30: After the producers return from vacation, Aoki speaks with a producer and demands equal time; she refuses. The following day, the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC) has a meeting with ABC President Alex Wallau and his executives. Karen Narasaki, chair of the APAMC, blasts them for not giving Aoki equal time and Maher for defending a racial slur against Asian people. Wallau later reviews the tape, agrees “it was bad,” and forces the producers of “Politically Incorrect” to invite Aoki to debate Silverman.
August 22: The debate is taped live for broadcast the following day.In interviews and her autobiography, Silverman has never told the full truth of the circumstances leading up to the fiery debate, conveniently not mentioning her attempt to blindside Aoki with her previous appearance on “Politically Incorrect.”
Formed in 1992, Media Action Network for Asian Americans (MANAA) is the only group solely dedicated to monitoring the media and advocating for balanced, sensitive, and positive depiction and coverage of Asian Americans. Since 1999, the non-profit/all-volunteer organization has been a founding member of the Asian Pacific American Media Coalition (APAMC), which meets regularly with the top four television networks-ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox--and pushes for better inclusion of Asian Americans in front of and behind the camera.

So, you, at least at the time that you posted that drivel...about two years ago, ..did not believe that, & for example, someone that is white can not argue against white supremacy or someone that is black can not argue against black supremacy, right?! So, if a person criticizes Donald Trump for his support for white supremacy, then, they clearly are non-white, eh?! And if someone criticises Cynthia McKinney for her support for black supremacy, then, they are clearly non-black!? Are you still as racist today as you appeared to be when you posted that shit??

While it's the unfortunate reality that ethnic groups tend to side with each other regardless of truth or justice, it's not always the case. I guarantee you that Margaret Cho and Bobby Lee, and most other Asian comedians, side with fellow comedians, not social justice reactionaries who deliberately misrepresent a joke to dishonestly promote their cause.

There were 2 moments that caused me to not respect that guy. 1. When he ripped on Sarah's satire and then refused to make a satirical joke upon probing from Bill (Bill should have leaned into it a bit harder but whatever... he still leaned into it about 10 times harder than anyone else would... especially at that time) 2. When he proposed the "I love Chinese People" as a punchline. This is the man that was criticizing Sarah's grasp of satire? And THAT is what he calls FIXING a joke? Jesus... the worst thing about this is... that guy is an absolute moron, yet he still got applause for playing to people's sense of righteousness. That audience was the WORST. If this conversation were held without an audience, Sarah would have won handedly... and David Spade might not have pussed out of the discussion entirely.

And to say the wall is purely racist is just disingenuous exaggeration. You don't understand what is happening. But until you pull a body out of a joshua tree with its genitals cut off to the bone, and the names of the persons family carved into their chest as a hit list, you never will. There are legitimately EVIL people that are using our unsecured border to produce massive amounts of human suffering and your solution is to let them right in. You are naive and ignorant and you don't know what it is you are truly advocating for. You want the Sinaloa Cartel to have a free open border? You want MS13 to walk in whenever they please? The wall is not to keep out people because they are brown. If that's what comes to your mind maybe you are the racist one.

  • 5 жыл бұрын

@@geeewhizz3245 oh, so your solution to stopping the cartels, who make hundreds of billions of dollars a year is to erect a wall on a border thousands of miles long? Is that really what you want that wall for brother? To keep the cartels out? You understand they use submarines in the gulf of mexico? The few million dollars it takes to build a tunnel under the wall? Or to simply cut a hole in it? You can't be serious. If you fuckin guys were serious about handling the cartels you'd simply assasinate the leaders and wipe out their means of production, which we're both aware the U.S. can do easily. I think you been drinking the fucking kool aid bro. The reason the cartels have been allowed to operate like they have been is because they're making money off them. Everybody is.

I'm an Asian-Australian and I find Sarah Silverman to be incredibly talented at what she does as a comedian. What Guy Aoki and Anna-Marie don't seem to understand is that a joke is just meant to poke fun at modern-day culture and ideas. It is not meant to be taken as law, dogma or even for educational purposes. When Guy Aoki linked Sarah's joke to an Asian that was murdered, it was ridiculous and cringe-worthy. That was a clear example of false-equivalancy.

True, you are right. But the fact of using racist words in comedy, doesn't belittle the hurtfulness of some people. You know? It might now hurt you, but to some other people it does. Using racist in comedy, makes them more usable. There is a reason why Aoki was altered, because it hurt him, no matter if its a joke, it hurt him, and maybe other people. No matter if its a joke, most people use it as an insult. The fact that a celebrity used that word, make some people think that its okay to use the c-word. For example, imagine that i was friend and slapped you really hard, and later said that it was a joke. Did it still hurt? Even if you know it was a joke?

Sarah: Sensibly and rightfully defends her joke, as any form of comedy should be defended. Anne-Marie: Rambles like a lunatic, yet takes up a majority of the discussion while deflecting and redirecting issues worse than Guy did (she's so intolerable that even Guy, the person she was defending, asked her to be quiet!) David: Wisely remains quiet through-out most of the debate, as he learned through his own career that no meaningful commentary will arise when a comedian argues with overly-sensitive people craving for undeserved sympathy.

Nearly a spot-on summary. Dave's silence may have been wise as far as his career goes, but it wasn't wise from a societal standpoint. To his credit, he did support Sarah's position when they dragged him into the spotlight. I wish he would have been more courageous here. I'm still a fan of his anyways. Bill's always bold and thought provoking and Sarah is brilliantly hysterical. Ol' what's-her-face is an obnoxious hen. Freedom of Speech above all else!

"Assume good intentions." 3 words that simultaneously encourage good will and outline the behaviour that leads to conflict. The moral is simple, we can pontificate all we want but most often we really don't know the intention behind other people's speech or actions. We have to make assumptions. So assume good. If you're looking for a bad guy, you're gonna find one, and you're gonna make yourself and others miserable in doing so. I try to live by that saying now and the grief it's saved me is palpable.
