    When Sonic Mania Plus dropped, base Sonic Mania got an update that added things like a new menu and zone transitions for all stages that didn't have them. I feel like they'd do the same for Origins: patch the base game, DLC new content, bundle that DLC'd version into a physical release.

    @BlazeHedgehog They don't even have to fix them up. The content is just available, the great versions are even soundtracked on KZread, just play those ones if they want the absolute simplest way of making it happen. I doubt any loud minority is going to complain it's not "hardware correct" if it means we get the much better sounding tracks.

    I think you're forgetting that, when Mania Plus happened, you didn't need to get that DLC to get the updates like the stage transitions or updated Metal Sonic boss. All that stuff was free. What you paid for was Encore Mode, Mighty, Ray, and 4-player Competition Mode. I'd guess that Origins Plus' release would come with an update to the four games we have for everyone for free that fixes things, maybe makes the new Sonic 3 music sound better, and then the paid stuff would have something like Amy and/or Mighty and Ray playable, some kind of bonus mode, or, with the biggest "maybe" you can think of, a new game or something like having R2 restored in CD like Hidden Palace was for Sonic 2.

  • @TomTheyy

    Dubious Depths would be rad, but we're still missing key sprites and assets that Hidden Palace Zone had in its favour, which might make its inclusion less enticing to Sonic Team as they'd essentially be trying to recreate what they were originally going for from scratch. There was also Taxman's Desert Dazzle replacement level, but then that kinda became the basis for Mirage Saloon Zone in Mania anyways, if albeit differently functioning to how a SCD level would work. Same with a couple ideas from Final Fever being used in that game instead. I do wonder if there's one last chance for Headcannon to make Sonic 3's multiplayer levels their own single-Act Zones, considering how consistently they mentioned wanting to do that in their remaster yet there wasn't a trace of work on that in Origins, outside of upscaling the graphics of the levels and including them in the Level Select. It was always an idea they had on their own, so maybe Sega just never approved it. Might be a lot of work.

  • @johney-duh-one

    @johney-duh-one

    @@TomTheyy About the assets thing, we really don't know how much of Dubious Depths was really made. Looking at how most zones were made, at the very least a tileset of some sort would've been made for testing before the object assets were made (the enemies, boss, etcetera), even then there's no way of knowing currently what was made for the round survive to present day. The tileset could've been lost and discarded in the move of Sega of Japan HQ, which is possibly the reason Christian Whitehead only found the enemies and boss in the dev digitizer he was given in 2011. Or the other assets (tiles, background, etcetera) could've been filed somewhere else, we just don't know at the moment. So we'll just have to wait and see, who knows? Sonic CD's 30th anniversary is coming up and we could see more of Dubious Depths then.

    Always great to hear your opinions on these things! I mean, i'm cautiously optimistic. They did fix the dodgy Switch port of Mania with Mania Plus after all, so there's a good chance they will iron out the issues in Origins Plus, maybe in some aspects even just with the free patch to support the Plus upgrade. Although the case for it does make less sense than in Mania, I still think it's somewhat reasonable to expect some kind of Encore-like mode. Maybe it would be a collection of remixed stages picked from the four/five/4.5 games in the collection rather than every single stage across every game. And I'm certainly hoping for new characters like Amy. I don't expect new games, not even if they lean into emulation for a quick bonus feature (in fact, like you said, that'd be _less_ likely). It's just not realistic and doesn't make much sense. IF they were to do any game it would reasonably be Spinball, or if I may present a wildcard, _Sonic the Fighters!_ Sonic the Fighters has an excellent modern native port, which even showed up in one of the Yakuza/Judgment games recently, albeit in the usual cut-down arcade mode only form. And it's certainly a much more enjoyable game than Spinball, Chaotix or Sonic 3D. Sure, it doesn't fit with the other games at all, but I did say it was a wildcard. Also, it would be nice if Plus also included all the Digital Deluxe and DLC content from the original release. In fact i would consider that the bare minimum. But we all know what the most important thing for Origins Plus is and that's a physical release! I wasn't interested in picking up the game originally, but I know my partner is gonna be all over a physical version. Finally, i don't expect the original audio for Sonic 3, but It would be nice if they just like, fixed the audio in general, since it's all really compressed in Origins, doesn't even offer the remastered music for Sonics 1 and 2, and I'm sure I don't need to tell you that a lot of the new renditions of the PC/proto music in Sonic 3 really suck, in my opinion at least, so I'd really like to see them redo those too. I dunno, I just can't get my hopes up with anything Sonic-related anymore. But even still, a lot of those seem like reasonable requests for Sonic Origins Plus, right?

    You know, if they did do an encore mode that was just, like, a "best of" that smushed together ~6 zones from the other four games, maybe that wouldn't be so bad. But I still feel like that would be a lot of work for the 9 months of development this is probably getting. I would take less features done well over more features that feel undercooked.

    I actually *want* them to put emulations of the original games in Origins Plus. In the leadup to release, the promotional material talked about how the classic mode would give you the original experience, but it ended up just being some modified versions of the remakes. What they should do is keep the anniversary mode, then change the classic mode to be the original ROMs. That way, you can have the modern AND classic versions. I also think that the other games like Chaotix, 3D Blast, and the Game Gear/Master System titles should be included, even if it is just emulation. This game is supposed to be about Sonic's origins, but it doesn't include anything other than the main four titles. I can understand your concerns about the games not aging the best, but it's not about modernizing them. It's about making them playable in the first place.

  • @comment1353

    They should really add a quick level select for all games, especially Sonic 1 and 2. That was something I was expecting that was absent in Origins. This isn't the 90s anymore, it's silly to expect people to enter cheat codes just to replay levels especially once they've already beaten the game. Especially for Sonic 2. Punching in the sound test code is a little tedious because I always forget what the code is and have to look it up again every time I just want to select a certain level in that game. Also, I was bummed out that they removed proto palace from this version even though it was in the IOS Christian Whitehead port. The jingle for it plays when you put the code in in Origins, but it doesn't do anything.

  • @TomTheyy

    It seems that the code is now used alongside debug mode to just access regular Hidden Palace Zone from the level select, even though you could just select it as normal in the iOS version if it was unlocked. I'm guessing they wanted to remove Proto Palace Zone but did it in a real awkward way because they weren't as knowledgeable working with the Retro Engine as say, Headcannon would be. They made the Drop Dash a cloned Spin Dash with animation issues in S1/SCD/S2, after all.

You know, the songs that were in the original PC release of that game that everyone called horrible because they were being played on hardware they weren't composed for. I actually really enjoy those tracks when played on the proper hardware, in my opinion Jun ruined those tracks. I know that everything, widely panned or not, will have a few fans minimum. But the fact that there is clamoring for Sega to waste its time and money to bring back an obscure game with a bad mechanic is so weird and dumb. Specially when you consider they might want animated cutscenes for it too. On second thought it’s likely curiosity that’s driving them to request it. Imagine Sega wasting resources on it and seeing sales of Knuckles Chaotix as DLC end after its 12 fans already bought it because surprise! It sucks. Sonic Mania was lovingly crafted and it sold below expectations, KC would perform abysmally as soon as the younger players tried it and told the rest about its suckage. Very well said, addressed a lot of interesting talking points. Sonic Origins Plus is Sega's last chance to rectify the more confounding aspects of this collection, but I wonder if some of that will require a bit more effort into messing with Retro Engine code than what Sonic Team have currently shown to be capable of on their own. I.e. being unable to properly add in the Drop Dash without cloning a Spin Dash and causing both leftover frames of that to always appear and an initial bug with Tails, despite simultaneously seeing Headcannon do it correctly in their contribution to the collection? Or giving us the option for a separate Super transformation button by just making one of the three jump button inputs permanently fixed to that purpose only. Even though Mania just made it a 4th input. It's subtleties like that which show they're a bit squeamish in working with the nitty-gritty of the Retro Engine. If they really are adding in another character or two, they're gonna need to code in stuff like new, unique moves they can't just clone from a Spin Dash. Now whether they get Headcannon to do that or not (at least outside of their remaster), I'm not sure. But you'd hope that level of polish a new character would need would mean other aspects of the collection could get the same level of care, like putting Max Control in all games, more cheat codes, or at least fixing the damn pixel filter blurriness from putting the Retro Engine inside the Hedgehog Engine. I do wonder if Amy would be added, though. I'm still kinda perplexed at the idea of making a mostly new spriteset and moveset for a character in the bonus content of a game collection, but Origins' ending animation did playfully tease Amy in action breaking spikes with her hammer. I assume that appeal of her non-Spin Dash, Spring-Hammering Advance 1 moveset might translate okay to a single-button playstyle? I imagine they'd want to stick with that Classic gameplay simplicity, if not outright mandated to. Though again, they may need to do some coding in making every spring/spike in the game properly interact with her Hammer, I remember some thread about difficulty programming that kinda thing in fan works. I'd laugh so hard if it was just Mighty and Ray, though. It'd also be weird if Knuckles still wasn't playable in SCD at that point, there'd literally be no excuse. "& Tails" playability is only missing in SCD too, but maybe Sega or their mandates would be weird about it or the Knuckles equivalent being in all games, especially considering the odd new secrecy in demoting the option from default to cheat code only in S1. Knuckles & Tails is technically already possible in S3&K though, being triggered just for MGZ Act 2 if you debug into Sonic's boss fight with Knuckles. It's also a wonder if they'll use Origins Plus to address the later prototype versions of the S3 soundtrack, if fans' outreach to use those versions with Hidden Palace's offer to send them the ROM will mean anything to Sega who were oddly ignorant of its existence, perhaps needing such verification. And beyond that, if Sonic 3's physics being different than the original will be addressed, either. From what I've heard, it's apparently a result of S3's values being interpreted differently by the Retro Engine or such. But does that mean it's something Headcannon themselves intended to fix alongside other issues of the remaster? Would it have to be treated as a separate, probably cheat code option within the established release? And also of course, we're still not 100% on if Headcannon are allowed to fix their remaster as they intended, though the hard mode cheat added in Origins' patch wasn't something we knew about prior, nor does it seem like something Sonic Team would add on their own. If they still don't get to fix it for Origins Plus, what is Sega even doing here?

    The idea that SEGA isn't aware of that prototype is an odd claim considering some music tracks are indeed from that prototype. They likely just didn't feel the need to meet expectations of that prototype because, well. They didn't release it. Why should they be held to the expectations of a build that was leaked by someone else? We weren't supposed to know about it, and just because we do now doesn't mean SEGA has to take that into account whenever they produce something that could be compared to it.

    @@NAFEDUDE That's kinda weird logic, it's all existing prototype music done for a game 30 years ago and it objectively sounds more complete than what prototype music Origins used. The Ice Cap music it shares? One track is the same, but the other sounds less unique than in the leaked prototype. That kinda suggests to me that Origins' music is just an earlier prototype than what was leaked, and Sega just aren't acknowledging the latter for whatever reason.

They're pullin' an SADX and tossing in emulated editions of Sonic's Game Gear library. Sooooo yaaaay? At least you were right on about Amy and the additional challenges. But it still feels overall half-assed compared to the likes of Sonic Jam, and even in some regards, Sonic Mega Collection. Especially since they want to charge an additional price for it.

    Regarding the S2K music situation, Sega doesn't own the compositions either, they have the rights for the Genesis renditions of those muaic tracks - meaning any new remaster or recreation of those songs (maybe eveb the Beta tracks) are legally put of bounds for Sega to use in a commercial product. That might explain why the Sonic 3 & Knuckles port for Origins doesn't have remastered chiptune and samples.

    I'm not buying origins plus and here's why. If you buy the base game now its $30, while before it was $40. Plus being $10 means that people who buy the game now get a discount, while the people who bought it at launch don't. Also if you purchased the premium fun pack and music pack (like ME) you get scammed even more due to it being included in plus now. This seems a little backwards to me, shouldn't you give the people who bought the game before a discount or even as a free update, Not just the new buyers? (I mean I know the reason maximize profits and stuff but it annoys me).

    I'm personally just happy sonic origins exists. Even if we have to mod the game to make it perfect, it's still great to see that these games got the mania treatment at all, they could have just kept ignoring sonic 3 and giving us more emulators for decades on end. This isn't to discount the frustration, but seeing mixed reviews on steam hurts knowing how special the prospect of this collection even existing in the first place is. The pricing situation has also sucked, but at least it's mellowed out at $40 for the full experience, plus and all. All of this is to say that I'm just happy they even made this game with all of the talent behind it, it's certainly better treatment than nintendo gives towards game preservation, buggy or not.

    While I do agree that Sega botched the release of this collection, I also think people are overly harsh on it. There were unquestionably some serious issues initially, but as you said, they fixed the most egregious ones in the patch. In my own experience, I feel like all the collection really lacked post patch was a tad nitpicky on my end. Though all I really wanted was for all 4 games to have a Sonic 3/Mania style save system with all 5 character choices (to include Sonic & Tails and Sonic & Knuckles) as standard options (minus Knuckles in CD since he wasn't in the original Christian Whitehead version). And maybe make the drop dash control the same in all 3 versions and give the options for all of Sonic's abilities in all the games, and the ability to set the chaos emeralds in Sonic 1 to 7 without having to do so through the debug menus, though I think that's even more minor an issue than the save system and standard character options. People have constantly quoted the "new playable characters" line in the promo material but shockingly very few people either are willing to admit or realize that it's definitely referring to Tails & Knuckles in Sonic 1 and Tails in Sonic CD. That said, I would hold my hopes in check for a Sonic Origins Plus even if it does get officially announced. I'd love to see Ray, Mighty, and Amy added as playable but beyond that and potentially Metal or adding Knuckles to CD, I have serious doubts any other characters would be added. Especially given the things Sonic Team has said about Mighty & Ray being exclusively Classic Sonic's buddies and everyone else besides Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Metal, and Eggman being exclusively Modern Sonic's buddies. Though if we just wanna talk wishlist regardless how outlandish? Man... I would love to see that recent 16-bit Triple Trouble fan remake get adopted by Sega into the collection with proper compense to the team behind it.

    Oh of coarse I find this video now. Not your fault, just a case of FML. In any case. Awhile back I ended up watching a video where someone else was covering how bad of a remake this collection is. At some point they were talking and showing that the speed cap had been raised/taken off and it reminded me if something. I thought 'that reminds me of Sonic The Hedgehog Genesis for the GBA'. The moment I had that thought, I couldn't help but think of the problems with that port and most importantly why it was the way it was. Because when it comes to Sonic 1, 2 and CD they all ran fine enough due to them all running on their on custom versions of Retro Engine for each title. Maybe someone else has pointed this out (possibly in the modding community), but I believe that in order for Sega to have a unified EXE file, for ease of ports and whatnot, the Origins Collection is running on a hacked version of Retro Engine that comes from Mania. To me, this explains the multitude of glitches, hit box problems and what ever other issues these versions of the games have that prier releases didn't.

The biggest proof is that majority of the prototype tracks in Origins sound identical to the 1103 version, especially IceCap, Competition Menu theme, End Credits theme, and new Blue Sphere result theme. Even Launch Base Act1 in Origins sounds identical to the 1103 version, expect it's lower pitched. Clearly the Origins version came from a different prototype and it's confirmed that Carnival Night and Launch Base Act 2 in Origins are based on the earliest version of these tracks. This also makes it possible that the reason some tracks seem to be identical is because there were exact recreations as that is something you can do as long as you know which sample is which (as opposed to recorded music were 2 identical performances is near impossible) As long as the Super Sonic theme still is technically with in the limits of the Mega Drives sound chip does it also not contradict anything. The Japanese fiscal year ends at the start of April, so if they're going to announce it, they're going to do it some time after they officially close the books on 2022 and start booking 2023. It makes it easier to keep their finances straight. For example: Sega debuted the first real trailer for Sonic Origins on April 20th of last year. It's likely the entire reason they're getting the ratings registrations setup in February is for an announcement in April. They've probably had announcement plans in motion for months now and they can't just magically make it ready. Beside I already see the lack of a proper emulated version of the games for there "Original mode" already as a glaring mistake as it means there is no actual way to play the game the original was as the remakes change to much on the foundations of Collision direction, physics and control behavior that these cropped versions don't make for a way to experiencing these the "original way". Also even if games like Knuckles Chaotix aren't the best so can most not even make this decisions for them self because who even owns a 32X. So including it could be nice. Same for SegaSonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Fighters and Tripple Trouble as Sonic Origins should I think also have the origins for all of the most important Classic era characters.

    I just think the limitations under which Sega develops their emulators is poor and has been poor for 20 years. And it's undoubtedly easier to make the Origins remakes more faithful than it is to fix an emulator, otherwise Sega would have developed an accurate emulator at some point over the 25 different retro game collections they've released on every console since 1998.

    @@BlazeHedgehog I have to disagree here there is no way its easier to make the origin version more faithful than even inaccurate emulation. Origin's game engine would need to be heavily altered for that to be the case things like under which condition Sonic can go from a run into a ball, general collision detection, the way collision and wrapping are handled, and general physics are all things that would need heavy alteration. Sega already has working even if flawed emulators on almost all platforms that they could implement and these emulations would despite there flaws still be far closer than what is reasonable do able by tweaking the retro engine. Never mind that with just 4 games should optimizing emulations for the games specifically be far easier than the usual "do all the games" type emulators Sega makes. Also you are the first time I have seen someone take serious issue with any of Sega's modern emulators in general.

    When the Origins announcement stated it’d be the definitive way to play the games, the absolute least I expected was the games to be remade in the new, well-loved Mania-style graphics. It’s a shame it was a pointless, shameless cash-grab project at the end of the day.

    Mania-style graphics??? I agree with everything else, but there's no reason for them to be Mania-styled. Sega advertised it as the _definitive_ way to play the games, meaning that they're remakes of the originals in a new engine. It would actually be more false advertising to make the graphics Mania styled instead of the original. They never said they were Mania-style remakes either, so I don't know how you can fault them for something that they never promised you

  • @Worldpeacekid

    @Worldpeacekid

    Remaking every sprite of four different Sonic games to make them all Mania-styled would take _way_ too much time to make for what is ultimately nothing more than a bundle of three old ports with some added bells and whistles and a new port of Sonic 3, and it'd take away from the "definitive" aspect of Origins since...well, completely changing the sprites of every single game in the collection means they don't look how you'd remember them looking as a kid, and thus they'd no longer be "definitive"; they'd just flat-out be remakes. I think it's much more likely that they simply fix up as many of the bugs and technical quibbles as they can, improve Sonic 3's new score to sound better and add Amy as a character in all four games; the kinds of things that improve the game overall, but don't require you to go through every single asset in every single game to remake all of them.

    We're all entitled to our opinions, of course. If you like 3D Blast, I don't have anything against you. And I don't really hate it myself. But it's like the Knuckles levels in Sonic Adventure, with no radar, more pieces to collect, and slippery controls. On top of the fixed, isometric camera making it harder for platforming. And since Flickies are tied to enemies, levels feel really empty, too. If you can vibe with that, fine. But I get bored around the halfway point. I'd much rather just listen to the music by itself.
