Gusty Day in the DA-40
Ғылым және технология
This was a day round trip from Waukegan IL to Iowa County Airport in Mineral Point WI. Both Departure and destination airports were gusting pretty good. Then on the return trip, the airport was turning MVFR with low ceilings. I found a hole and climbed over the top for smoother air.

Great video - really showcases the visibility and controllable flying of the DA40.
Thanks Andre for the compliment on the video. Please read my previous responses to others critique of this video. Another thing to keep in mind is the view from the GoPro which tends to distort the perspective as far as distances go. Keep studying and good luck!
Don't be afraid of the centerline. Those winds were only 10-20 degrees off the nose. Nice video. Nice plane.
Its the thought that counts! I like that guy. and the grouch controller too. :P
Yes it does! This was a biggest challenge when I started learning. It took me over 10 hours to get better, and even then. But now with 130 hours I'm pretty good. The trick is fly 3 times a week. SHORT FLIGHTS, don't go anywhere further than 10 minutes. Don't learn maneuvers, just take the controls turn a little go straight etc.
Thanks for your reply. I apologize for, basicallty, putting "you on the spot" - should not have done that. Was a very nicely done video; and I did enjoy watching it. Thanks.
Very nice video.
Great video. One can tell you are an experienced pilot. Which is where things may go wrong. As an inexperienced one who is still learning, and who is doing his written exam on air law this week, let me tell you this was not VFR. What you show here is neither 1 mile horizontal nor 1000 ft vertical distance from clouds. A bad example, and, well.. plain forbidden, if you ask me. Common sense, too, says that you will not see other airplanes, nor will they see you, if you cloudhop like that.
Excellent job! I was wondering when someone was going to call me out on that. It shows why checklist are so important when flying, even if you think you know all the steps. If you keep watching at around 2:25 you can see I realize it when I go to shut the pump off.
Great video, we have a DA40TDI which we fly out of Leeds UK (EGNM) we would not classify as 9 gusting 19 as gusty! We are flying regular approaches 260/25 gusting 35 on runway 32! Great video though
I hope that 's not some kind of fat joke :) We all wish our stick was longer but no, it's actually very comfortable.
VFR over-the-top (OTT) refers to flying over top of clouds in visual flight, rather than with reference to instruments. This is usually done for brief amount of time to avoid weather or turbulence.
Great landings! I too fly DA40's. I love them, especially on landings. However, I really really hate those glider wings on gusty landings...
Haha ya, I did my checkout a few weeks ago and checklist is key for me now until I get a good flow for this plane, its a little easier to flow check a 172 but the DA40 needs the use of checklist, good video though!
When your at flynig speeds it take very little movement of the stick to change direction in the plane about the pitch and roll axis. You usually fly with only a few fingers on the stick.
I've always found flying videos amusing when someone's crusing at 6,000 ft. I trained at KAPA, at ~6,000 ft I'm taxiing! Good video work, and excellent taste in planes. Would love to be able to hear the intercom/radios.

+David Spittler The intercom audio is in the video and I was transitioning to 6,500. See original comments from 3 years ago. Should have never put the 6,000' text in the video...:)
Thanks for watching. "VFR Over the top" is not an IFR term to be confused with "VFR on Top" which you are refering to. As for the cruising altitude, you are correct and I did end up transistioning to 6500' shortly after, however the video during this section was better due to the sun and lighting. I don't claim to be insrtucting anyone on flying, I simply post for those who are interested in flight.
Stay in the 152 if you are training right now. Also, much cheaper to fly the 152 than a DA-40 or even 172. Once you get your ratings you csan move up through more advanced aircraft. As far as landing a DA-40, the attitude on landing is way differnt than a high wing, no steerable nose gear, faster and a floater. Throw in a crosswind and it can get a little exciting but not to difficult to master with practice.
@tomellis6680 Great comment, we have 18 DA40 TDI and 7 DA42 TDI which we fly out Montpellier (LFMT) we would not classify as 23 gusting 35 as gusty ! We are flying refular approaches 010/35 gusting 45 on runway 30! great comment though
Great landings, I have been on commercial flights so much scary than this, Michele.
i gotta agree that the DA-40 is a floater but i also noticed that you are actually approximately 70-78kts on finals. you would wanna try flying on perhaps 60-65 kts on finals and that would definitely cut the floating distance. For gusting winds maybe you would wanna land flapless at 75 kts
hello I noticed that almost took off without pulling the joystick, confirm?
What're the rules to VFR-over-the-top?
Great jooob !!
Great video! I'm a student pilot, I have not flown in gusty winds, Is a little bit hazardous flying when is gusting at 20 and above?, because I have to do my long crosscountry but this week is gusting, shoul I will appreciate if you answer me. Thx Cap. for the video.
thanx what type video audio set up you have? thanx getting checked out in Diamond Da 40 this next month

We typically shoot most if not all of our aerial cockpit shots with various GoPro cameras but audio is recorded using a Barnstormers Audio cable fed into a small Sony audio recorder and then sync'd up in post produciton. Have you seen our latest video here- kzread.info/dash/bejne/l2hpmbWFmsnYf7A.html
Couple questions... I'm a student pilot at Embry-Riddle, and in the interest of keeping current over the summer there's a flight school back home that has a Diamond Star that I'm interested in renting. I'm already used to all the G1000 systems, our 172's have them as well, but how would you compare the flying characteristics of the DA-40 to the 172 other than low-wing vs. high wing? Also, how do you record cockpit auido in your videos?
so true
does the yoke go any higher? i cant imagine flying with it that low.
Nice flying...looks like the wind was giving you a hard time..:) tell me something though I notice due to direction of wind you had to use a lot of right aileron. Were you using a lot of right rudder as well if any and how effective it is in terms of crosswind landings in this aircraft? Im training on a c152 but our school's competitor has a diamond so I was just wondering.
cool
Hey nice video, i noticed when you departed at the beginning of the video you didnt use the fuel pump, any reason for that?
what camera did you use and what did you use for the Audio??!!! GREAT VID
dont you feel sick on those winds? if i were there my stomach contents would have probably been all over the place. i went up flying once. i felt queezy for quite some time, usually in turbulence. thank god no vomiting though. phew. does motion sickness get better over time?
nice flight...is it true that the DA-40 cant recover from a spin? and you need to pull the chute?
were you on an IFR flight plan on the way back?
ride em cowboy
lol did the tower call you 402AM instead of 419AM on the take off?
i feel like im blocking the way on the first takeoff
FIrst the DA-40 doesn't have a chute like a Cirrus. I have spun a DA-20 with no problems. The DA-40 is not rated for spins however you can watch a video on KZread of a factory pilot testing it in a variety of spins and recovering.
Beautiful video! Loved it when you went over cloud for VFR. Is this a Diamond DA40-TDI? What varient is it?

Thanks for the comments. No this is standard 180 HP Avgas version, no diesel.
I agree with nikolaki70
You kinda look like Rick from pawn stars haha
Yes, I knew what he meant. He's always making small mistakes...:)
VFR
Centerlines are for wussies,.....just kidding, always trying to perfect the landings and these were some of my first hours in that plane. Most of my time was in Cessna's up until then. Always improving, hopefully.
hahahahha chill out Captain
Nice video - and, I hate to be picky, but..... Your VFR cruising altitude should have been odd thousands, plus 500, Or: Even thousands, plus 500, (when you were cruising at 6,000 on auto pilot.). Your "VFR on top", is only used on an IFR flight plan - which you were not. I would wonder why you would put a video, like this, on U-Tube, when you know other rated pilots would see it, and see the violations. Just sayin'...... N-6395T
I didn't see any "violations". You can't judge the pilot in command over an 8-minute video snippet of an entire flight. Come on!
What do people not understand about the 90/10 rule, over 50 percent of this video is looking at the tv screens.....
