Hey, I'm from Pakistan and I was having a conversation with my Nani about the partition recently and this interview reminded me of that. She's old and even thinking about the atrocities makes her cringe. She said when we lived together (before the partition) we were so happy and she wonders how it went so wrong. She said she has great memories of Diwali with her hindu friends and of them coming over on Eid. Glad you did this interview. It's good to see people talk about the partition and it's issues from a personal point of view.

Karthigai Dipam I couldn't agree with you more. The hatred is all over and that brings me down sometimes. The only thing that makes me feel hopeful is that at the end we as individuals have a choice. We can set a good example and take steps to move towards a peaceful, tolerant world one step at a time hopefully.

Arooj Mashood My Nanaji lived in Peshawar and was orphaned at a young age because his parents passed away fighting for their country. He moved to New Delhi with his brothers during the partition. I remember him as a soft-spoken (tehzeeb wale) person who read Urdu newspaper and only ate halal meat...I guess these habits showed traces of his roots. I wish he were alive and I could ask him more about his life before the partition. Also, my wish is that we stop fighting for our identities and build bridges so that we can move on as people.

Priya K I'm so sorry your nanaji had to go through something like this. I try to put myself in his situation and I can't even imagine what he must have gone through. You know my Nani told me they came here on a train. The train that stopped after their train, everybody was dead. She said they had to go check just to see if someone had survived and unfortunately nobody had. I can't imagine what trauma they must have gone through. That's why they avoid the subject as much as they can. Too hard to deal with. This partition really brought out the worst in everyone. There is page we have called the citizens archive of Pakistan that asks all records real life incidents people went through during that time. I wish we would just learn from history and work on things that really matter in both the countries like health and education. Maybe even help each other instead of bringing each other down. Maybe some day :)

Partition is indeed a sensitive topic. My grandmother used to tell me how they would play with Muslims and Hindus and no one would ever bother about religion. Religion was not a big deal in pre-partition IndiaPakistan. Watched the movie today, you did a great job telling the story Gurinder Ji. "Main awyin panga lae leya, but then I am a Sikhni " that was classic lol. Great interview!

i dont understand why people only talk about massmurders and massrapes at one side... what about the rapes and atrocities happened on Muslims in Indian side.. my neighbour for 15 years, an old lady known in muhallah as Khala suffered from partition. her whole family got killed. only she and her married sister survived and settled first in Lahore then in Wah Cantt. Muslims in Pak side were no saints. they killed and raped too but my problem is that all partition literature and films are always one sided. Keeping Pakistan's present image in the world, its more misrepresented...

Huma is such an average actor. Wish someone more talented had done this.
