Ali Abbas Zafar is very talented person & director man. Loved his interview thoroughly

Anushka Sharma was shown as a strong woman. Just because she got pregnant and physically could not compete people are calling that a weakness? Why is child bearing a negative thing? It's a strength and not a weakness. She accidentally got pregnant and wasn't forced into anything. I's not like she was told to stay home and just be a mom. She got pregnant and continued coaching during this time. To me, she was much stronger than Salman's character. He changed his life for her. They show her back in the ring at the end pursuing her dream. They have a daughter who ends up following her mother's footsteps. As a working mother, I take offence to people who look at the a role of a mother as anti-feminist. It doesn't define a woman but it shouldn't be mocked if a woman takes pride in that role.

If you have seen the movie, it actually promotes the female character unlike any other typical bollywood movies and even shows them superior in many aspects, keeping in mind the economics and the money making tactics.....It shows Sultan has dedicated his life entirely to Arfa and the importance of the female child...If you try to bring equality and Utopia in every movie you will not be able to depict the reality or lose the entertainment value to draw a crowd big enough to preach

I haven't watched the movie yet. But you know , even if it does not promote its female characters who cares. Sultan as a movie has no pretense about itself. It does not claim to be a female empowerment movie. Its a run of the mill mainstream love story that happens to be about wrestling. You are right. Such a movie should only worry about being entertaining.

I gasped every single time Katrina's wall-poster was shown in the video. Whenever there is a long-shot or a frame shot Katrina's photo was really distracting & the focus of the camera was on her. I dint understand whether that setting was intentional.You should've set your table elsewhere Anupama the interview would've been more interesting & less distracting.

The movie was set in somewhere around 2004 or 2006, I mean the time when Salman wins Gold at Olympics.Back then money was a big thing & I dont think anyone received such large amount of money & Sushil Kumar won in 2012 London Olympics.

It is set in 2008 , Abhinav Bindra , Vijender Singh and Sushil Kumar were the medalists in 2008 Beijing Olympics and all of them were rewarded handsomely .

Anupam chopra is always reluctant to acknowledge SK as an actor, wonder why? . ..madam be credible when you have taken the role of a critic. Sometimes, it would be nice to act few scenes in front of a camera n see how you did it.,then you can rate others. Test n trial would be a good lesson. Critical fairness doesn't mean to come with a ton of bricks on others. I think you people have your preferences!!!...

Entertaining interview Anupama. But daymn, Katrina was distracting!

+filmcompanion - i love your interviews but was so disappointed when i heard the director justify aarfa's character. I say this with all due respect to the film director and the fine Salman Khan film he made. To make a film on your experiences is one thing - but to generalize all women's roles as to "stay at home while the man hunts" or "be ready to give up a lifetime goal for your child/husband/family" is regressive and demeaning. It would have been nice to remind him that not all women are like that - given the numerous conversations happening in the Hindi film industry about women roles/portrayals today.

when i watched mere brother i had some respect for this director..with the passage of time and his ridiculous movies and historical inaccuracies i don't feel like watching his films anymore

What bugs me the most about this interview and other reviews is , that we are looking for gender equality between movie characters. These people are fucking nuts. They fail to understand that every char has a graph which is a function of the story and the world they live in. Lot of characters play second fiddle to the protagonists. End of the day , where the characters end up is the script writers call. Look at many of our gangster or action films , where women don't have substantial characters. The female characters in those movies are treated like props. "Dhoom 3" is a good example. Sultan is a mainstream masala film that is marketed as a story of a failed wrestler and his rise there after , should not worry about being correct about gender issues. This kind of criticism is valid for a movie like "Ki and Ka" which is about gender dynamics. If there is something regressive in that movie , pointing that out is a fair game. But looking for social correctness in a movie like Sultan is such a pointless exercise.

That criticism doesn't make sense. Length worked for me, that waht gave the arch

Salman has lowered the bar so much for himself that even a scene in front of the mirror showing his paunch is considered oscar worthy. He has never challenged himself , always played safe and has essayed characters that are close to his own personality. Now when he does a scene where he shows paunch all of us are expected to go gaga over him.

+ Alok pandey My comment was restricted just to that one scene. I haven't claimed anywhere that I have watched the movie. You have a problem with that deal with it. You are a blind bhakt of Salman (i guess you call that being a fan in todays times). Which is why your frail ego is bruised.

I get that it's not sexist if the woman herself willingly chooses what she wants to do (whether be a stay-at-home mom, wrestler, or both), but the way this director explains it is rather simplistic and ill-informed. You can't justify this dumb movie's story, which is clearly all about glorifying one male superstar, by saying that no one will see what the girl is doing. If no one cared about what the girl is doing, then maybe you shouldn't have cast anyone in the girl's role in the first place. I was indifferent to this Ali Abbas guy earlier, but this interview really made me dislike him.

He shouldn't have launched himself into lengthy , all over the place monologue that made him sound all guilty. He should have pointed out to Anupama that this a movie and its his choice where the characters end up. He could have probably just put forth the characters motivations and compulsions.

Abbas makes film with hidden content of praising Muslims and defaming hindu. He made Muslim character as boxer who does not worship Hanumanji. There is no any Muslim boxer in India. And all boxers worship Hanumanji. He always try to show pakistan prem. There is one dialog in his movie happy bhag... mujhe nahi Pata tha pakistaniyon ke dil vich Inna pyar Honda hai. My foot. This abbas thinks no one knows his agenda. But he is wrong
