Rohit Shetty Interview With Anupama Chopra | Simmba | FC Post Mortem | Film Companion
Ойын-сауық
Note: This video may contain spoilers about Simmba.
After the big success of Ranveer Singh starrer Simmba, the film’s director Rohit Shetty sits down with Anupama Chopra for a post mortem on the film. Here he talks about making massy the new cool and how commercial films have become today’s parallel cinema. The director addresses the reservations Anupama Chopra had about how the female characters and the topic of rape was addressed in the film. Rohit Shetty gives us a peek into what he’s working on next and hints at an actress-centric cop film that is in the pipeline from his production house.

Rohit Shetty has a glowing personality, always has a smiling face! :)
There are two filmmakers who understand the pulse of the Indian audience better than many others -- Rohit Shetty and Rajkumar Hirani. Both are poles apart as makers, yet they know the insight into the viewing behaviour of the Indian audience, which translates into successful box office. I have my theories for both of them. However, I have only theorized their style and decision of filmmaking. And that is independent of the casting of the film (which is separate altogether). If Ayushman Khurranna stars in Simbaa and Rajkumar Rao stars in PK, the situation won't remain same. Anyway, now, the theories: Rohit Shetty first tries to understand the audience, the masses, and then tailor-makes a film for them. He decides on the ingredients first -- action, comedy, drama, tragedy -- and then incorporate all of it in a larger-than-life set up. Even as he tells in this video, the elaborate entry of Ajay Devgan in Simbaa was pre-planned keeping in mind that it has potential to evoke whistles and claps. Thus, he decides upon the ingredients (backed with research and discretion as what might work for the urban mass ), creates a formula, churns out a script from it, and then executes and presents it like an aspirational entertainer. Rajkumar Hirani's process is the reverse of that. First he conceptualizes the script irrespective of the sociology of audience and the commerce. But once the film is in place, he modifies it from a commercial perspective -- which scene to punctuate with background score, where to dumb it down, when to manipulate audiences into taking sides and also when not, and when to state the obvious (tell, don't show!). The success of these filmmakers is interesting as it can reveal a lot about the Indian audience. Our country is heterogeneous. Thus, there should be films for everyone. The insight into why someone is liking a film, be it of Shetty's or Hirani's, is interesting for and significant to our film industry - both for the art and the trade.

Actually Rohit Shetty is a south director in hindi cinema.... Agree...

He is adorable as a person. Liked the last few minutes where he talked about his studio dream☺️
I really liked the interview... The questions and the intention was genuine. She did not have an agenda to trash this. Rohit was very very honest in his response. I think it's high time that people stop expecting every movie to have a slot for women. When Mary Kom can survive just on the shoulders of PC why can't Simmba stand on the shoulders of a man? We always blame men for not joining the fight for women and when they do we cry that women had no role to play. Simmba was a commercial movie with a great reach and did not show any woman as weak or incapable.
@prashantsingh9068

@@prashantsingh9068 May be read my response again and then ask this? I am not a fool to write about Mary Kom if I don't even know who she is! Mary Kom's story did not need a 'hero' and we happily watched 'her' story without questioning the contribution of the men around her (although her husband is a great support system for her) but in Simmba we question the role of a woman in finding justice to another woman, so why cannot this be a story of a 'hero'?
@prashantsingh9068
5 жыл бұрын
Ranjitha Kashyap Mary Kom plays in the Boxing ring not men in her life. Plus her husband's role is as big as hers. In the film Mary never fought for saving men around her. She fought for herself. Your comparison of a silly dumb masala movie to a biopic tells about you that you are too dumb to understand.
@ranjithakashyap2081
5 жыл бұрын
@@prashantsingh9068 This is the general problem I see in people who dismiss masala movies and do not like to see anything positive in these. I don't think Simmba was dumb... Calling it dumb just because it's a masala movie is harsh... Just like calling me dumb just because my opinion/perspective does not match with yours... I am practically a stranger to you... you can disagree to my point but calling me dumb is so not cool. As far as Mary Kom is concerned, I used the 'movie' to compare two stories said from a male and a female perspective. When a female story is shown, we do not expect the role of the man to be substantial but it's not the same way other way around. We are not comparing the stories, but the perspective of the people about different movies and genres. I am done explaining. Take care.
Simba is an awesome movie...i Had come back home from the theatre with a bigggg smile on my face...like Anupama said there were sceen with emotion, laugh, sitimaroing..and what not....just loved each bit of the film....aankh mare an ajay devgan entry was the highlight

thats bullshit lmao. All he does is copy Telugu+Tamil movies, and mixes the scenes together. Sometimes he buys the remake rights aka "Temper" for Simmba... other times he just copies/pastes... for example "Okkadu" in Chennai Express. Simmba was basically 3 movies combined in one... TEMPER (TELUGU)+ PATAS(TELUGU)+ THERI (TAMIL). He bought the rights to only one of the above films... *Temper is far far superior to Simmba* The fact that he cut Temper's original climax, and intro scenes actually proves how incompetent he is.

When Yash Chopra was making great films with amazing women and showing them in a glamourous and beautiful avatar, no one said why is he not doing the same for men. Now let Rohit show his men with Machismo and 'Larger than Life' avtar, if that's what he likes. What's wrong with that? Everybody has a unique talent and a certain frame of mind, a certain WAY of doing things. It's their individual character. Why force them to do something else? There r other people who r making great films with women as well. Let him do his thing. We want a spectrum of various kinds of cinema. Why bottle it all into one shape and size? Let there be different films, different directors with their own sensibilities, make wonderful cinema to entertain audiences of all likings. Men have certain qualities or features which are unique to them, so does women! Let females be feminine and males be masculine.... Why everyone has to wage war against nature in today's time and diffuse everything into one mould. Live and let live, Love and let love be, be open to all ideas, thoughts, movies, opinions, and point of views!
i wait every day for new content from your channel. Addicted now! Great interview btw (as always) Couple of things, Anupama doesn't flatter her guests just because they are on her show. Apart from calling out the good, she does speak about what she felt didn't work (in this case the rape angle). Rohit believes in a certain school and goes about making it unapologetic-ally!

It took him as many as 12 films to sound so intelligent. Arguably the best Rohit shetty interview and the credit for that goes to those wonderful questions asked by even more wonderful Anupama chopra.
This movie is a remake of Temper . And original creators need to get appreciated for making dis.
Try interviewing with short film makers. Their struggles, their journey and future plans, would sound interesting.

Akhil Vaka +1 she shouldn’t reward filmmakers with unhealthy messages to the society.

@@additect That's not what I meant. I said create awareness with budding film makers. Every profession comes with hardship, not necessarily caused by humans, could be many like finance, marketing, streaming apps and their policies, KZread business, how to enter film industry who has no contacts. How to approach producers. So much to be learn that side.
The way you handled the female representation issue in his films was very tactful and you did a great job in keeping on the topic and digging deeper to get a meaningful answer from him. It's not easy to confront such big directors about issues like this that they sometimes don't even know they're responsible for perpetuating, good job!

Devika Lakhote she should have the guts to talk with Hirani like she did with Rohit. Sanju was the most problematic film justifying the actions of a womanizer and bragging about having 340 girlfriends still she didn’t say a word since it was under her husband’s production
