    Since he owned the name he had every right to use it. That still doesn't change the fact that it wasn't in the least bit Guns N Roses.

    Bravo for your job here, giving voice to Axl on this matter at last. It's hard to disagree on a single point - him coming up with the name in the first place, then taking caution to protect himself against Niven, then being "strongly advised" by Geffen to put it on the cover, etc. Which rings true to me most is that he really cared and did suffer for this name more than anyone else, so let him own it forever. No problems with "Chinese Democracy" as made by GnR at all - a beautiful album + different logo design + you are allowed to take your band in a different musical direction without changing its name.

    In all these interviews, Axl says he kept the Guns N' Roses name to survive. But You look at someone like Ozzy Osbourne leaving Black Sabbath and starting a solo career and how well that worked out for him. Imagine if somehow Ozzy called The Blizzard of Ozz or Diary of a Madman, Black Sabbath albums (assuming he had legal rights to do so). People would have said, "That's not Black Sabbath" and he wouldn't have had the success.

    @@Guitarded51 No he didn't, you're right about that. My point was more a "what if?". Ozzy used the departure from Black Sabbath to change his sound and image and that worked out much better than if some version of the now tired Black Sabbath tried to do the same. In reality, it was Tony Iommi that did the Axl Rose and held on to the Sabbath name until the dying end, even when it was him as the sole original in the end. Dave Mustaine did the same thing with Megadeth. I would have liked to have seen what an Axl solo project would have been like.

    When Chinese Democracy came out (as Gn'R), I KNEW Axl owned the rights. I think it only sold at Target or Walmart. Period. In my opinion, it still carries the same GnR feel, with radio playable hits. So, can someone please tell me, why didn't it take off? Original band lineup loyalty? I get that. But damn, cut your nose to spite your face? As long as they're alive they have the opportunity to get back together (minus the inside sh*t WE have no clue about). Then there's the money and fame. Once you win that lottery ticket...You don't have to answer to ANYONE ever again. And as fans, we should be so blessed and lucky to be able to hear in the first place.

    @allsystemsgo8678

    I'm not really sure what you consider radio hits. Axl doing all of two interviews and no videos didn't help it. The fact that it took over a decade to make where the album became a punchline in the publics eye didn't help. Calling it Guns n roses when you only have one guy left. Hard Rock in general isn't as popular as it once was.

Just take a look how Slash now plays very happy al CD songs

    I got a random phone call from a lady in 1995. I'm not sure who she was, or how she got my phone number. She asked me, "If Guns N' Roses would ever break up, and start a new Guns N' Roses, who would you rather see in the band, Axl or Slash?" I thought about it for a couple minutes, and said, "I don't know! I love both of them!" She laughed, and said, "I know, it's hard to choose, isn't it?" I finally said, "I guess it would be better with Axl." Looking back, in hindsight, I wonder if this fan survey had anything to do with Axl keeping the band name after the lawsuit? Man, that was a strange time... I remember it like it was yesterday!

    Guns 'N' Roses stopped being guns n roses after Axl saw that he was above everyone else, there was originally 5 members of the band, & they played together like a finely tuned & well oiled machine, but after Axl started to throw his weight around & show everyone else that basically this was all his idea, it made perfect sense for him to start a new band but hold the name of the old band because to Axl it is all about territory, he just assumed or hoped that his once biggest fans would be ok with a different band as long as the singer remained the same, mathamatics is my not my strong point but with 80% of the band gone, & just the one remaining member & mind you it's not even because the original members died of old age or something similar, you just have one voice left of a one time shit hot band, basically saying come on guys, lets work like a team & do it my way! who would want to own the name of a band that was once the best band of an era for a generation, just to be able to say I own the rights to this stuff! that was done once before & it failed also the band once used to be a little awesome Australian band called "The Little River Band" with no original members & no birth place of Australia anymore, it's just a business savy person trying to milk all the dollars out of a once great performing musical act, & I just personally have less respect for somebody that is trying to call something new the same thing that something entirely older & different was, I would have respected Axl Rose more if he came out with all this new stuff for chinese democracy but said "well guns n roses was what I lived & breathed for a long time but this is a different band from a different time period, with a new sound & this is what I can do with a new crew! but he didn't he was once touted as the worlds baddest most dangerous band, which intern became just one person left due to everyone else being fired or leaving, so now all those brilliant magical musicians that now because guns n roses is different yet again, So now the 2nd version of guns n roses don't get to be remembered for their time with Axl Rose in his own project band, of their own title, they just get to be reffered to as "Those 9 or 10 musicians whom were employed by Axl Rose for a guns n roses titled album that was totally not guns n roses when does being employed by guns n roses as a band member ever hold any weight when you were never a founding member & at the time the band changed it wasn't 1 or two members it was about 10 or so members, see from 5 original members to 10 non original members, bang in one go! listening to poor young kids bragging that they got to see GUNS 'N' ROSES live, when in truth they saw Axl rose & the most talented set of musicians since a long time "but they are known as the fake guns n roses", because instead of giving them a brand new name for a new sound, you just reminisce & call Chinese Democracy has got quite a few awesome tracks, & I do love Shacklers Revenge, but it's not Guns 'N' Roses, it's a good song, but you can't sell a car for a lot more money just by changing it's name to something that it's not!

    After Guns he went solo but still called in Guns 👎 that was just wrong. But I suspect with all the drug intake he probably saw the writing on the wall and just made a business decision to feather his own nest. He’s an asshole, not stupid. I remember when he made that comeback in the early naughties and friends of mine coming back from the show (pre internet days really) being all confused cos Slash & Duff etc weren’t there and it was just fat Axl & friends. He caught out a lot of people with that trick - by keeping the name. But I suspect that was all part of the plan. He probably looks on it as survival and the smart thing to do. The truth is Guns died with the departure of the original members and Chinese Democracy was an Axl Rose solo album.
