The videos for "Don't Cry," "November Rain" and "Estranged" were meant to tie together and tell a story - that story is based on the literal short story Without You, which was written by Del James, who was a good friend of the band, particularly Axl Rose. James wrote Without You based on Rose's relationship with Erin Everly, whom he was married to in 1990 (they divorced in 1991 after a miscarriage). When it came time to make the videos, Rose and James decided to cast model Stephanie Seymour to play the female lead, and she and the vocalist ended up romantically involved. She starred in "Don't Cry" and "November Rain," but by the time they went to record the video for "Estranged" - which was going to continue the story told in Without You - the couple had broken up. So, they had to improvise, and during one scene in the video, Rose jumps off a tanker boat in the Gulf of Mexico, and swims with dolphins - all in a Charles Manson shirt. “Axl had split up with Stephanie Seymour, and he was like, ‘I don’t want any more beautiful girls in my videos; I’d rather have a dolphin,’" director Andy Morahan later explained to Kerrang!. "We knew that we were deliberately doing that so people would go, ‘What’s all that about?!’ There was a sense that it was throwing up a lot more questions than answers, and that suited everybody - it created a myth and intrigue around the whole trilogy.” "The dolphins was to assimilate a state of peace or state of grace. It was not originally intended, but in the next scene I will be drowned and go to heaven, and I really didn’t want to shoot a heaven scene," Rose said during the "Estranged" part of Makin' F@*!Ing Videos, which was released on VHS in 1994. "The music in the song always reminded us of whales at that particular point, and so dolphins showed up and it kind of brings all that together," he added. The "Estranged" video was meant to be a continuation of the events in "November Rain," so if Seymour and Rose hadn't broken up, the age-old question as to how her character died would've been answered. But, if you want to find out for yourself, you can read the short story Without You. (Source: Loudwire)

Thanks for the interesting backstory. I did not know that. I hadn't seen "Don't Cry" in a long time, so I started watching it. That's when I found out that Weird Al had ruined the song for me with his snarky commentary "Al TV" version. In a GOOD way though. I had to go watch his instead. If no one has seen it, trust me. It is SO hilarious! It still makes me laugh so hard. Be warned though, once you see it, some of the funnier comments WILL come back and haunt you. So it may ruin it for you too. Enjoy!

Spoiler: Without You is abt a rock star who cheats on his woman. She won’t take him back and he writes a song called “Without You” for her that becomes a massive hit. She ends up killing herself and when they find her Without You is playing. Heartbroken, the dude sets his place on fire and kills himself while playing Without You….. When you hear “without you” as one of the last lyrics it hits harder knowing Axl is heartbroken. ❤- A huge GNR fan

Awesome reaction. I hope that you'll react to more GnR in the future :) Axl has such a great vocal range. One of the reasons I love Estranged, is that he showcases his range, all the way from his baritone (you are correct that it is his natural voice), all the way to his higher pitch vocals. There are not many singers (especially male singers) with that range. It is impressive. Also, you are correct that Axl wrote Estranged about the end of his marriage (he was married to Erin Everly. their relationship was toxic, but earlier on in their relationship, he wrote Sweet Child O'Mine's lyrics about Erin). Not to be confused with the song meaning I had mentioned above, is Estranged video's story, where the end of the trilogy (other had mentioned it in other comments, so I will not repeat it) comes into play. Yes, the dolphins are beautiful, and also a confusing part of the video, but I think Axl wanted the dolphins to be a part of it. Another reason why I love the song, is that Axl wrote Estranged on the piano, and the band later translated it into other instruments, as well.

The baby and the kid are both AXL to show how the sense of loss and abandonment have traumatized him throughout his life. "Alone" When he says "I never wanted you to die" he is referring to his mother.

As mentioned it was inspired by the short story written by his friend Del James… but to add the sequencing story of the music videos -Don’t cry the song the scenes show how rocky their relationship is mainly cuz guy tours and the lady isn’t fond of the tour shenangigans and she isn’t there -November Rain the same couple (axl) married his girl and even with marriage she is still haunted by Axls touring life she shoot’s herself hence the coffin only showed half her face (so they can make u think it’s a self inflicted gun shot to the head) -Estranged the video shows the aftermath of him being lost and wanting to find peace and the dolphin signifies peaceful tranquility and notice? Axl grabs the dolphin before Slash’s second solo = metaphor for wanting to find and grab peace Hence the last verse “Il never find anyone to replace you, I guess Il have to make it thru” Sorry for the long comment they’re one of my fav hence the avatar 😅 @Bisscute sorry for the long comment

You completed listening to the important highlights of G-N-R's double album Use Your Illusion. Don't You Cry, November Rain, and now Estranged. Both albums of Use Your Illusion were very important when they were released back in 1991. A rock n roll miracle happen that year when six music artists released albums that redefined the entire rock music genre and they became the beginning staples of what the rest of the 90's decade rock music would sound like. These albums from 1991 are... -Metallica's album Metallica (aka The Black Album -Pearl Jam's album Ten -Guns N Rose's albums Use Your Illusion 1 and Use Your Illusion 2 -Red Hot Chili Pepper's album Blood Sugar Sex Magick -Soundgarden's album Bad Motor Finger -Nirvana's album Nevermind As far as your question to 'why is Slash so cool? I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprise if it has to do with all the drugs that he use to do back then. In his autobiography book he admitted that the cross that he wore around his neck was a poison necklace. It was where he stored either cocaine or heroine in, and he would just pop the top off it whenever he wanted to take a hit. But that's just my guess of why he's perceived as cool.

Yes! You are correct. That was a Charlie Manson t-shirt. Sounds like you have an idea of who he was, but yes. He was an insane guy that was basically a cult leader in the 60s that sent his followers to murder actress Sharon Tate and others, and he spent decades in prison until he died like 6 years ago. The shirt kind of works for this song, since I think, it may also be about a mental estrangement, like being estranged from rational thinking, but these things also become a thing sometimes just because they're essentially symbols of the counter culture, and it's just "cool" to posture outside the mainstream or normal. Particularly in rock n roll. Part of it comes from the counter culture movement of the 60s in America, where it was just cool to be against the establishment, and outside the system, so to speak. But also, since the inception of rock n roll, the older more conservative people have railed against it as being something that would corrupt the young just because it was different, and as they saw it, wild and dangerous because of it. There's been different forms of it over the years, and some of it is even coming back. In the 80s there was a thing referred to as the "satanic panic", where religious types in America were freaking out that hard rock and heavy metal were trying to promote the devil, or whatever. There's lots of old myths that if you spin certain records backwards, and listen to the music in reverse, you can hear hidden messages from the devil. Stuff like that, and in some places you're starting to hear that stuff again. So, as kind of just a way to lean in to that out of rebellion, or just to piss off the uptight "squares", a lot of hard rock and metal has intentionally incorporated a lot of dark, Gothic, or horror imagery as a vibe. I'm sure you've noticed, but it's usually more theater, and more just about intentionally being against the grain than anything. I'm guessing that Axl Rose didn't actually think good things about Charles Manson. It's usually about just trying to be provocative and controversial more than anything. The posturing over that kind of stuff is usually a little much for my taste, and sometimes comes off as ridiculous for trying too hard to be different, even though they're all pretending to be different in exactly the same way, but I'm more of an easy going guy, but I do appreciate the struggle.

Lyrics: 🧡 When you're talkin' to yourself And nobody's home You can fool yourself You came in this world alone Alone So, nobody ever told you, baby How it was gonna be What'll happen to you, baby Guess we'll have to wait and see One, two, three Old at heart, but I'm only 28 And I'm much too young to let love break my heart Young at heart, but it's getting much too late To find ourselves so far apart I don't know how you're supposed to find me lately And what more could you ask from me? How could you say that I never needed you When you took everything Said you took everything from me Young at heart, and it gets so hard to wait When no one I know can seem to help me now Old at heart, but I mustn't hesitate If I'm to find my own way out Still talkin' to myself And nobody's home Alone So, nobody ever told us, baby How it was gonna be So, what'll happen to us, baby? Guess we'll have to wait and see When I find out all the reasons Maybe I'll find another way Find another day With all the changing seasons of my life Maybe I'll get it right next time And now that you've been broken down Got your head out of the clouds You're back down on the ground And you don't talk so loud And you don't walk so proud Anymore, and what for? Well, I jumped into the river Too many times to make it home I'm out here on my own, and drifting all alone If it doesn't show, give it time To read between the lines 'Cause I see the storm is getting closer And the waves, they get so high Seems everything we've ever known's here Why must it drift away and die? I'll never find anyone to replace you Guess I'll have to make it through this time Oh, this time Without you I knew the storm was getting closer And all my friends said I was high But everything we've ever known's here I never wanted it to die

Wow, I'd forgot about this one, another is ' Ain't It Fun ' same band, and estranged by bisscute.bisected. my favorite this year.oh the lyrics might offend, I loved instruments in both songs.

Really a great song, end of trilogy (Don't Cry - November Rain - Estranged), and this way a perfect MTV videoclip in 90's. In this truth, this song had less reproduction in that time was so longer by the radios (this song had 3 minutes more than November Rain for example), so did less commercial success, but this was and is a marvelous rock song. thank you Biss!!!!!!

Yeah, Biss, estranged is a typical term used when a couple or friends are no longer getting along, the love has gone or just general angst between the two. My recommendation this week is Amigo Apaixonado by Victor e Leo.💕

This song is about accepting unrequited love Whereas November Rain was denial of it

My memory from the "Making Of..." video: Song = failed Marriage to Erin Everly (exWife) Video = Dylan (exGF Stephanie Seymour's son from previous relationship, who Axl grew close to during time togetger) & Stephine Seymour (exGF) Dolphins = Axl was completely tired of women/relationships by the making of this video, and wanted something entirely different to be his "salvation" in they key part of the video, combined w/some of Slash's killer guitar work sounding like whales/underwater wildlife

That is Charles Manson on his t-shirt. They had a song written by him as a hidden track on their Spaghetti Incident album, if you let the last track play it is after that.

Hello Bisscute. I understand that Axl wrote this song about who he is and how he felt about the breakup of his marriage and how he didn't want it to end. I also understand that Axl also introduced the link between Estranged and November Rain, where November Rain would be a song about not wanting to be in a state of having to deal with unrequited love and Estranged for its part is about recognizing it and being there, and having I have to figure out what the hell to do. According to the singer, dolphins symbolize a state of grace and peace. Later in the video, Axl throws himself into the sea, in a moment of desperation and fed up with everything that is happening in his life. Greetings and a hug from Mexico City and continue presenting us interesting material.
