I love it when the "tactical" crowd hates on Milsurps. They say stuff like "they are just good for collecting dust" or "they are garbage because they have wooden stocks"
The truth is Military surplus rifles (Enfields, Mausers, Mosins, Arisakas, etc) are among the most well made firearms in history and often the most copied designs used in modern rifles. Look at the Winchester Model 70 with it's controlled feed bolt action operation whose lines are taken directly from the popular German K98 rifle. Many powerful sporting rifles are built on surplus P17 actions with the ears ground off.
We even copied the K98 to make our famous Springfield 1903 rifle.
The 1911 service pistol is probably one of the most copied and reproduced handguns in history and it's legacy has lasted 100 years and is still going strong.
John Moses Browning, one of the most clever American engineers that ever lived, ended up with over 128 patents that changed the face of the way we see military and civilian firearms to this day. Many of his designs are copied all over the world and for good reason.
His Browning A5 was used by the Air Corps to train gunners on shooting moving targets.
His Remington Model 8 was one of the first semi automatic rifles fielded by the FBI and other LE agencies and was one of the firearms used in popular last stand with Bonnie and Clyde.
The list and description could go on for days, but I would encourage you to research historical firearms on your own.
I think that in recent years, Military Surplus rifles have made a big comeback. With the advent of youtube video and other online social media assets, a wider and younger crowd has been drawn to them. Personally, I've probably been responsible for the sale of more Mosin Nagant rifles than any person I can think of. Not to ring my own bell or anything.
I'm glad you guys enjoy Gun Gripes. We enjoy bitching. Good day.

I bought my first gun recently. It’s a Mosin, thanks to Hickok and IV88. Paid $500, but it’s in beautiful condition with the stocks all original and uncracked, all the pieces have the same serial number, the bite is in great condition and all the original accessories too which is a nice bonus. Guy gave me 60 rounds of 7.62x54 as well after we had a conversation where I used some of the info I got in these guys videos.

Alvin York was also very clever. In addition to his rifle, he also used his .45 pistol. And he would move around, firing each from different locations, while shouting "orders" to nonexistent troops. He convinced the Germans that they were up against an entire squadron, not just one man.

A legend to say the least. However, Sgt. York used an M1917 Enfield. The American-made Enfield was pretty common in WW1, but Hollywood myths have made it seem like 1903's (also nice rifles) were what was carried.

Nicholas Howatson I see plenty of 50+ year old bolt actions still around. All it takes is a spring to break on an AR-15 and its completely out if commission until you find a replacement spring. Mosin Nagants are simply more rugged inherently because its a bolt action. Most bolt actions will outlast semi automatics due to there being less moving parts.

I took it out to sight it in a few weeks ago and shot a three shot group all in one little hole at 100 yards with a random load I picked out of Sierra’s reloading manual. I knew it was an Accurate rifle as it shot .5” groups at 100 yards with a bedded stock, Timney trigger, and a 12x optic. I didn’t think it was going to shoot anywhere that tight with the original trigger back in, the original stock set(unbedded with barrel clamps stressing it), and no optic to boot! I went out and bout an all original, Norinco SKS I should have bout 20 years ago for $89 the next day for $270. I’m hooked!

tbone martinez During the assault, six German soldiers in a trench near York charged him with fixed bayonets. York had fired all the rounds in his M1917 Enfield rifle, but drew his .45 Colt automatic pistol and shot all six soldiers before they could reach him. German First Lieutenant Paul Jürgen Vollmer, commander of the First Battalion, 120th Landwehr Infantry, emptied his pistol trying to kill York while he was contending with the machine guns. Failing to injure York, and seeing his mounting losses, he offered in English to surrender the unit to York, who accepted. By the end of the engagement, York and his seven men marched 132 German prisoners back to the American lines. His actions silenced the German machine guns and were responsible for enabling the 328th Infantry to renew its attack to capture the Decauville Railroad.

I completely agree with the idea that the person kills, not the gun. That said - I'd like to point out the common factor in many high profile gun crimes in the US - psychoactive medication. This affects the person - and when a person is affected this way, I don't think we should trust them with a tool that allows them to kill so effectively.

I don't have my gun license yet, but I have been thinking about getting my license. I wasn't sure what type of gun I should start out with. I was looking at PIstols, so I figured the Tokerov handgun. I figured a handgun would be cheaper, since it's smaller and there's not a lot to them. BUT, after looking at videos of the SKS, and the Enfield No. 4 I am starting to feel a change in the wind. Really starting to get into these military surplus weapons. I am a big lover of history, and these guns have a lot of history behind them.

I've several '03 Springfields in 30-06 an Enfield "jungle gun" but I prefer to hunt with a '95 Chilean Mauser in 7x57. Anawful lot of these old guns especially Mausers were rechambered in calibers other than 6.5, 7x57 or 8x57and sporterized. I cannot fault the accuracy of the Mauser with the original barrel one bit. A word of caution on the older Mausers and low serial number Springfields and hot loads.

"Universal background checks" sound good on paper, but the farthest that it could be implemented is the current system we have.

Right on. There is also something satisfying about taking a 100 year old gun and lovin it up to perform as well as a current production rifle. Again with the ammo, it allows you to practice much more for the money. I would never dream of shooting 2-3 boxes of .308 in a sitting. Your talking a $75 bill. The same from a Mosin runs $11-12, with the same smack. Plus you can't deny the history that is soaked into those rifles.

I don't understand why some folks look down on the idea of hunting with a milsurp, they are accurate, hit hard and designed to be rugged in the field- everything a hunting rifle should be.

The only regret I have for being a milsurp collector is that I did not start early enough. I started about 6 to 7 years ago. Even since then almost all the firearms I bought (rifles) have at least doubled in retail value, some tripled. Some of my treasures I have had to pay up for. Swiss K31 very good condition 895. jungle carbine #5 650.00 with matching bayonet, the rest were very good prices. Just one example I scored a SVT40 for about 300.00 about 3 years ago. Anyway love to watch the old gun vids and keep up the hard work.

My 1923 M91/30 is totally stock and with the bayonette attached I was picking off 12 oz cans and 3 inch diameter clay pigeons at 25 to 50 yards along with 2 liter bottles at 100 yards not even trying hard. They are among my favorites.

Bought three K31 from the Arsenal in Bellinzona a few years ago. Price was 100 Swiss Francs per rifle with baionett. Cleaned them and use them regularly, one is a bit less precise than the other two, in any case all three ar emore precise than me.

It's funny you mention Alvin C.York because he was my great grandmothers great uncle. Here in Murfreesboro Tennessee we have a highway and a va hospital named after him

Great history in this video. I have yet to buy a mil surplus firearm mainly because I am new to firearms and I am a little intimidated by them. I have zero knowledge about these firearms and I don't want to get ripped off. This video is convincing me to look more into it. Great vid, love to see the support of other youtube gun channels as well!

good vid...I`ve got black guns, plastic pistols, state of the art glass for both but, when I just want to have fun...I grab my 03 or Mosin and stuff em full of handloads taylored to their unique tastes and can still hit all the way out to 600. My 2 groove 03 will out shoot the Mosin every time but a 300 meter ram is toast to either
