Friends don’t let friends be fudds. Let’s just say I know the alias of a friend of a friend who carries in his university (in California) with an polymer 80 Glock using handloaded ammo. He/she is 17, got really creative on hiding the purchases, forging age and id, and bypassing California’s draconian laws, all because the law is much less of a concern than a mass shooter or an assailant.

Great for target shooting, small game hunting, pest control, and self defense with the right ammo and technique. Inexpensive, customizable, reliable, and well documented. Its hard to beat for a first timer.

I've recently ordered my first firearm, a Savage 110 Bolt-Action. My main points to hit were something that I could grow into with practice, bolt-action to space out and make my shots count, and I wanted a reasonably affordable round (308 win) that I would feel the shot more than my buddy's 22.

Crazy the difference in options over time. Love these videos with Barry. If you’re here in 2022 looking for a good first gun.. look for an AR15 (palmetto, radical, Springfield, ruger, s&w are good, affordable options) if you just want a nice versatile rifle for life and liberty. or if you’re looking for a handgun for concealed carry glock 43x or the sig p365xl, great size to flex for both home defense and concealed carry :)

My first gun was a Ruger 8301, still shoots like a dream. Only issues I have is when I run crap ammo through it, but one of my favorite parts of shooting is cleaning the guns after so that doesn't faze me at all. I like it better than my 10/22 cause I like to shoot subsonic rounds out the back door at squirrels and I don't think the 10/22 would cycle them really well. With a bolt, I never have to worry about any of that.

My first gun I bought a couple days ago. A 1939 Mosin Nagant. Absolutely in love with it and super cheap to shoot! Surplus ammo is very cheap(440 rounds for about $97 shipping and all) but it is corrosive so you have to clean right after shooting so it doesn't rust but really can't go wrong with it. It seems like a lot of people start with this gun and I don't blame them at a 7.62x54R round it's perfect for hunting or just taking to the range to shoot. At a price of $154 it's also a great buy as well too!

I just bought my first gun: a Springfield Armory XD-9 Mod. 2. I wanted something good on which to learn and was told 9mm's are a great choice. I wanted a reasonable cost of ammunition and price point between $350-$450. I also wanted something to carry concealed if I ever decided I wanted to. Just as in my business life whether I'm bidding or pricing, I never take the cheapest or most expensive option. Usually the best value is found somewhere in between. Finally, I made the decision based on how it felt in my hand. The critical factor was that I felt it was easier for me to eject the magazine on the SA, more so than the other manufacturers. I practiced dry firing in my living room and learned all I could by myself and didn't even load the gun until I was in a beginning safety course. Now I have been to the range a couple times by myself and plan to take a LTC class in the near future. As of September 1, 2017, the price of applying for a LTC in Texas will decrease from $140 to $40. I'll gladly wait the 86 days as of this writing. $100 is $100, after all. I still have no idea if I'll actually carry, but at least I'll have the option.

It was able to handle hard cast 357 or 38 shot shells. Great gun. But in my opinion any 357/38 double action revolver or a 9 mm duty style pistol is the way to go. Something fairly cheap and easy to shoot but also something that can be reliable used in the self-defense environment.

Right! a persons very first firearm should be a .22 caliber rifle. But, not a semi-auto. It should be what I was taught on at age 9, a single-shot, bolt action with a separate cocking piece on the bolt, a kid-sized Winchester and a full-sized Stevens. ( I also own a kid-sized falling-block, an early 20th Century Stevens, with a heavy trigger, and a large external hammer, that has to be cocked.) BEFORE you do any actual shooting, you MUST be taught to handle guns safely, by someone who knows MORE about it than YOU do, until the safety precautions become second-nature, and are followed with absolute consistency. Only THEN should you be taught to actually shoot, and only after plenty of shooting with the .22, should you try your hand at larger calibers and more complex actions. Great site. Keep it up.

+TekkitCast somewhat true, though if you persist and get your Cat A & B license you can still own many cool guns. Yes semi auto rifles, semi auto and pump action shotguns and handguns are restricted, but that does leave bolt, lever action and pump action rifles (yes there is that discrepancy between pump action rifles and shotguns). I consider my Remington 7600 Police in .308 with 10 rnd mags a 'good gun', or the several bolt action and lever actions I own 'good guns', and now that I have spent the money on getting my IAC M-87 lever action shotgun reliable it is a 'good gun'. Just because the asshole Government has placed restriction on firearm ownership doesn't preclude you from doing your best to maintain ownership. Play their game, be politically active and try to get the fucking hoplophobic laws repelled.

mobstamaniac yeah mate I have often looked at the gear NZ'ers can get, to be honest it makes me quite depressed. High capacity mags are great, but I am not that upset about our 10 rnd (cat A license) or 15 rnd mag limit (for Cat B) restrictions, I have rarely emptied my mag out while hunting and if you have few mags (I have 4 KKK 10 rnd mags for my Remington 7600, along with 2 factory 4 rnd mags) a simple mag change keeps you shooting.

They never carry rabies (seriously, like single digit number of cases in history, ever), they help get rid of carrion, they aren't mean enough to pose much threat to dogs, cats, etc., they eat literally thousands of ticks each every season, and they tend to run other, more harmful vermin off. If they're not directly causing you problems somehow, you should leave opossums alone.

Not always, I like guns with op hit boxes. So i can hear them rage while they watch the kill cam in the afterlife

My first rifle for shooting was a Marlin model 60 with a 2-7x20mm tasco scope (not great but does okay). My first hunting rifle is a Mossberg 800a in .308. Came with a Bushnell Banner 3-9x32mm with a 50-250 yard adjustment turret made it a lot easier to sight in. The first rifle I am going to buy is a DPMS Tac 20. I like the .308 and I like the AR platform. I was looking at the Classic DPMS .308 but since it had the old school M16 grip and I like a quad rail the extra $100 is going to be well spent. Plus a 20" barrel is nice and I plan to use it as my primary rifle.

My first gun was given to me at the age of 15 and it was a marlin .22 semi auto. I only shot it once unfortunately and then it was stored away. I really need to bring it out, clean it, and shoot it. My first gun that i bought myself is a .357 and i love it. I shoot it every week if i can or every two weeks.
