Actually if you look at the statistics ALL the common pistol defense calibers took more than one shot to stop. So two .380's , 2 .22lr., 2 9mm's or 2 .45's what difference does it make? People shoot until the threat is "neutralized". One caution about shooting incident statistics: Of course Each shooting situation is UTTERLY, completely (randomly) UNIQUE! Here's some things that make each situation different: I.E. How big was the assailant? How motivated or drugged up? How much fat vs muscle? where did the bullet enter? What angle did it travel? What organs did it hit?What was the assailants blood pressure? How hydrated was the assailant? All these things affect the outcome of the shooting! The least of which is:"was the bullet .357" in diameter or .40" (.043" difference) in diameter... .357 is a damn good round. My now ex-wife insisted on a GP100 for her defense gun when we were married. I suggested she carry a minimum of a 9mm with at least a 10-round capacity but she insisted on a .357 Magnum. She just likes revolvers better.

Ya have a choice.Ya gonna get shot. Do ya wanna be blown away (20mm, .700ne, .50bmg, .500mag) or do yez wanna be able to cry about it later (.32, .25, .22, .17).

Any caliber will work on a sane person, problem is some people are crazy and on drugs. But if someone was shooting even a .22LR at me I would get the hell out of the way.

I'm 65yrs old, I've reloaded since 1965, from 22-250 to 300 Weatherby, from 380acp to 44mag, and everything in between... The study he talked about is the truth... I've shot and reloaded them all and seen the damage they cause. I shoot a 40S&W 180gr, near max. It's a joy to shoot in the Beretta 96, I've found my pistol.... In a revolver, I love the 357mag in 125gr with a 6" 6shot Smith, Taurus, etc....

45-70 is a hell of a good round. I have an old 1873 Trapdoor Springfield that fires black powder rounds and I love it. I can't decide whether I want to take that or my new AR out for opening day of deer season this year. I'd love to get a lever action 45-70 and load up some rounds comparable to an elephant rifle.

Just want to say that I love these videos. I'm kind of new to the gun world and have learned so much just by watching your channel. Thanks guys.

When I was a young kid shooting at a range for the first time, our range master told all the kids there to always respect a firearm regardless of caliber. He brought out a .45 and a .22 to use as examples, and asked the group which of the guns would "kill you more". Obviously the group of kids all decided that it would have to be the .45 that would kill you more, but he corrected us in explaining that a .22 will still kill you. He said that dead is dead and that the size of the hole wouldn't matter at that point. Needless to say we all respected our little .22 rifles a bit more after that. So anyone that goes around saying a 9mm isn't deadly is an idiot. All that matters is having a straight shooting and reliable gun that you're personally comfortable with and can use effectively.

I'd call the .40 S&W (my personal favorite) a nice compromise round between a 9mm and a .45ACP, but I don't feel like I'm losing anything. It's speedier than a .45ACP but heavier than a 9mm. It penetrates very well like a 9mm but I can carry more rounds than I can in my 1911. If there is a drawback, it's that a .40 S&W in a polymer pistol is a little too snappy for some to feel comfortable shooting where a 9mm or even a full steel 1911 is going to be a bit smoother. Just my two cents.

@@hobbyhermit66 was it really small and had a polymer lower? My full size 5” barrel 1911 in 45 is my smoothest shooting gun recoil wise. I can hit steel with it from decent ranges and my CZ75 compact steel frame in 9mm is a really close second but then my smith and Wesson shield M&P 9 is pretty snappy cause it’s so light. Personally I would rather EDC a slightly heavier gun that I can shoot better with so the CZ75 compact is it.

Have to agree. The .40 S&W is my personal preference. A 9mm is to fast and a 45 ACP is not fast enough. Again personal experience personal preference. My carry is full frame sig P2022 in .40 S&W.

A 22 will kill you tmrw. Lol. If healthcare services shut down though being shot by a 22 in the torso would definitely equal a slow and painful death. Something like 95% of bad guys after they got shot the first time no matter what the caliber so if you do have a 22 that’s probably your best hope. Although I do have a 22 handgun that I could dump 40 rounds into someone really quick and that may stop someone in their tracks cause I can hit a cole can from like 150’ with it! Lol

Shot placement is indeed important, but the reality of critical self defense shooting is that you are making a mistake to rely on accuracy. So a less than lethal shot from a .40 is more likely to stop the aggressive action than the same shot from a.380. So unless you're a sniper, or you know some Jedi mind control tricks to make the bad guy hold still while you shoot him, think about ballistics (stopping power) instead of just accuracy.

I have always loved 40 caliber. I have the hk usp compact 40 and have carried it for almost twenty years until recently when I finally retired it for something smaller in size and caliber. It’s still my home defense caliber. I use it and a g23 hidden around the house because I know the extra helps but never knew 96%. I know this video is older and 9mm has caught up but 96% back then for forty is probably better now.

I just recently found the video about Barry's passing. I've been watching for a while and I know it;s been a while, but I still want to convey my deepest condolences to you and his family. From this old jarhead rest well Barry. Semper Fi.

The study would also implicitly take shot placement into account, the only real caveat I would have is that it's a study of effectiveness with reasonably proficient shooters. It's very possible some calibers might perform differently overall in a study with inexperienced or less proficient shooters. That's how statistics work.

I love to watch these calibre debates 9mm vs .45. M16 vs Ak47. What I would say in conclusion is I live in the UK where you can't have any of them ( well you can but it's very difficult and pistols are almost unheard of unless they are long barrel with a tail sticking out the back) you certainly can't carry any of them and if you had a licence and even mentioned self defence they would take your licence/gun's and never let you have them again. If I had a choice of any of these calibres I would consider it an amazing freedom. Being able to buy and carry a .22 lr pistol as personal defence would be a victory for freedom. I would stop moaning about calibre and be happy you can own a gun. Saying that though I'm partial to that 357 magnum.

Sprotdude17 If you didn't know, it was a knee-jerk vote-gaining decision made after the Dunblane shootings in 1996. No doubt if it hadn't been election time, this "law" wouldn't have been passed. As somebody born in 95, I've never had the privilege of owning or shooting any handguns, like ever. The carrying aspect doesn't phase me, however the owning/ability to use at a range aspect does. I have to fly to a different fucking country just to have some fun with handguns/semi-auto anything above a .22lr Was lucky to use an L85/LSW in my time as an army trainee, but that's about it. The fact that there are American citizens (fools) actively trying to ban firearms they know nothing about sickens me as a law abiding brit who will never get the chance no matter how much I want to. I maybe the only person in the UK who believes that owning a gun or the right to self defence should be an inalienable right. We do not have a constitution formulated by some of the best minds in history. We have been subjects (subjugated) by a monarchy for many hundreds of years as such most Brits would not have the slightest notion of being free despite what you may have seen in Robin hood. Most Brits like to be ruled and seem incapable of becoming vexed over anything other than football.

Great video, I also when it comes to carrying for edc I like the 9mm and I carried a 9mm for 10 years as a police officer and a 45 acp for 2 years. I'm retired now and my favorite is the 45 Colt and that's because I am into single action revolvers, but if I was still working as a police officer today I would still choose a 9mm. Great video, very informative, thank you for another great video.

Idk I've worked on alot of people in surgery walking their entire intestines and checking the body. I've seen 22lr and 9mm where they made alot of holes, bullet by a lung, major vessels grazed, even people shot 3-27(obviously 27 was the 22) times. Never operated on a person shot with a 40 or 45. So I am sure the people once they are in the recovery room are glad they were shot with 9 instead of a 45, especially the major vessel ones, that extra size and power would have been all that was need to cut it and bleed out in minutes

I’m a ninja sword man myself. Seriously I think what ever caliber you can hit your target most successfully with is the one for you. Hitting a threat in the chest with a 32 ACP is a shit ton better than missing a threat with a 357 magnum.

I am a fan of the 22LR cartridge. As a veteran of a combat unit, it was my job to be an expert with the 5.56, 7.62, and 50BMG. But as a civilian, I have no need for long range shooting. It is overstated, but the 22LR is fun to shoot. It's very accurate under 100 yards and it's easy to place several rounds exactly where you want them, and to do so very quickly. There are limits to the 22LR, but for civilian duty, it's doubtful I'd encounter them.

I think .22 magnum is a better round for self defense. Especially if you get the heavy projectile rounds so it doesn't kill your ears

I enjoyed your presentation..... seems accurate to me.... shot placement is definitely important...... however if a person is not confident/cool under fire than it doesn’t matter what you carry 😊

I carry .357 sig and it is a beast, plus with a barrel swap you can still shoot .40 s&w.

In ancient times, the bow and arrow were pretty effective at killing someone. No "wound channels" or expanding arrow heads. This isn't because a projectile is particularly powerful, but because the human body is extremely fragile. Any arrow or bullet penetrating into a vital organ will usually disrupt its delicate biomechanics (blood flow, nerve transmission, etc). The real question is where the projectile hits and what kind of damage it does.

Actually an arrow is much more lethal than a bullet. The whole arrow is like 500 grains it it typically will pass right through the deer or target. Have you seen the hunting tips with a 1" cross of razor blades??? What bullet expands THAT much?

This is very interesting stuff. I am getting a security job pretty soon and I'm looking for a new sidearm, right now I'm leaning towards the 45 ACP as my caliber choice due to the fact that if I didn't have any hollow points available I would feel confident enough with the ball ammo. There's nothin wrong with the 9 millimeter but there's one factor that was not mentioned and that is what if one shot is all you get? I'd much rather have 1 45 ACP bullet hit my would-be attacker over a 9 millimeter bullet regardless of shot placement. One of the biggest pluses for a 9 millimeter is you have more rounds in the gun but I think personally if you have to discharge your gun 17 or 18 times to stop a threat you really need to spend more time on the range.

After working armed security for years, generally you are issued a sidearm in whatever caliber the brass decides. If you need to purchase your own I have always been told "duty caliber" ie something the military or LEO carry. The vast majority of the companies unless you have a military contract will be 40s, so if your gonna get something I would start with that.

I can't come up with a scenario where I would only have one round. I have a magazine in my gun and my pocket for a reason. But the idea of a handgun is not to kill, just to get the bad guy to stop doing what made you feel the need to shoot said bad guy in the first place. If he stops after 1 round mission accomplished. If you literally only have one round, run.

and size of caliber makes up for error in shot placement. unless you do not panic in the least bit in a life or death situation, you're likely to miss exactly where you want to hit.

Shot placement is irrelevant in stressful situations ur hunting ur defending yourself in a shitty situation

I have them all but i usually stick with the 9mm and .38 for most of my edc with .45 & .40 sometimes in the mix. Depends on how i feel that day i guess. But for the "bump in the night" i always have my G20 10mm with a light/laser combo and an ar15.

Be great to see a video on the more common wildcat calibers that not everyone gets to see or even know about

I'm looking into getting my first firearm for self-defense and concealed carry, and I've been trying to research caliber and ammunition types (without much success considering my ignorance on the subject). My brother, who is former Army Infantry, refuses to use anything smaller than a .45, disdains 9mm, and has been unhelpful on the subject. I seriously considered picking up a 9mm pistol just to spite him, but wanted to be sure it would be functional. This video was extremely helpful and educational and gave me a lot of context as to what I should look for and consider in ammunition types and caliber. Thanks for the input, Eric. I hope you keep making accessible and informative videos. RIP Barry. I'll miss hearing your practical advice and wry humor.

Let me echo what they said. Shot placement is most important. If it is your first firearm you want something you are comfortable with and can control. If you need to defend yourself you're going to be shaky, nervous, excited, your heart and head will be pounding and you will need to be able to control your weapon. Smaller calibers usually have less recoil and are easier to control. Besides, if they keep moving, you can always shoot them again. I'd recommend you try out a few. Try to find a range that will rent guns and ask one of the range guys if they have classes, or if you can come by some time and have them show you a few calibers. Most people that know about guns are usually very happy to help people out who honestly want to learn. Your brother is not you. If he wants to carry a .45, no probs, that's his business. If you are carrying for self-defense then you will be trusting your life to this gun, you want something right for you. It might just turn out to be .45, it might be a .32 or anything else in between.

Your brother is kind of correct but military ammunition is limited to FMJ ball ammo. I was a soldier 6 years and then a cop. All military ammo must be non expanding due to the Geneva convention. A 45 does not need to expand because it is already big. A 9mm needs a hollow point expanding bullet and then it performs very well. So in the military using non expanding ball ammo sure 45 will perform more reliably than 9mm. In civilian life you don't have to use FMJ ball ammo and a 9mm jacketed hollow-point will perform as well as a 45 and you will have a lighter weapon with less recoil and more ammunition in your magazine. So really go with what you like they are both good. I would go a 9mm or 40cal in a Glock because I carried one and it was a spot on weapon. Maybe there are other pistols as good but my department used Glocks and I can speak about it for that reason. 100% reliable over 15 years we had them. Maybe go to a range and try out a 45 and a 9mm to see what you like. I have to say that a light gun is better for self defence because you will not get sick of carrying it with you while a heavy steel 45 would annoy me. I carried the baby glock in 40cal as a detective and it was small light and hit hard. The same weapon would have been fine in 9mm with good ammo. Having a small light weapon with you is much better than a big frame heavy one you leave home because it is annoying to carry. I don't think amo capacity is very important because for self defence realistically you will only get off a few shots and it will be over. 9 rounds in the small glock is plenty. Hope this helps.

S&W .357 magnum with 3" barrel was my first. My wife can managed the .38 +Ps out to 20 yds in that now and I can managed the magnums in my S&W magnum in a 4" barrel out to 60 yds with a 4-6 inch grouping. It took a couple of years off and on at her family's farm, but we're both doing much better and focussing on rifles since we now have the 20 ga and 12 ga shotguns as well. Gotta start someplace... ;>D

Out of all the caliber debates I have seen, this one makes the most sense. Thanks for clearing things up. I prefer the .45 auto. It is just more fun to shoot in my opinion.

Great video. I carry a 9 and I can't tell you how many people say that they're 45 is so much better then you go to the range and they're over there missing left and right and I'm drilling the bullseye every time. 100% agree with you guys shot placement is key. Same with hunting rifles.. I don't care if you have a 300 ultra mag, if you can't consistently shoot good then it's worthless and the guy with the 243 that you made fun of is going home with all the meat

the caliber isnt really the issue...ANY OF THE CALIBERS MENTIONED WILL DO THE JOB!!! so now it really boils down to what caliber you can shoot accurately, control recoil and follow up shots, and has a capacity suited to your needs and skill level...

You guys are great. You are doing a great public service. I do have one question: Is mixing your ammo in a handgun a no no? That is, FMJ and hollow point, or several different types of self defense ammo?

I have two .32 acp pistols and use them for carry and home defense. They are dependable and accurate. Don't forget James Bond used one.

Emil...i am with you! .32 can make for a good defensive handgun. It's a throwback to another time. It was a very popular caliber. People are still made of the same flesh, bone, and blood. If it was ok then, why not today?

A very deadly thing I have learned and seen about .22 is I have had patients that had been shot with no exit but the bullet will hit bone and deflect and thus hitting organs in other locations...basically internal bleeding in places far from the entry wound!

I agree with what Eric and Barry said about shot placement being the most important factor. As far as the rest of it goes, it all boils down to personal preference. I personally like the. 45 acp. I like the idea of that bigger slower moving projectile. I do agree that with the 9 mm's lighter recoil it should be easier to make accurate hits with.

This is a good talk, but I was surprised with all of this talk about temporal and concussion and temporal cavities they didnt talk about the implosion of hollow organs.

I carry a walther ppq with trijicon night sights. (sweetest stock trigger on any polymer handgun) 15+1 and it'll be much more comfortable when I get a custom holster. In a high stress situation, I want more rounds, not less and that's why I choose 9mm - capacity. You're more likely to be attacked by multiple aggressors.. not just 1. I can get my PPQ out of my holster and accurately empty it center mass in a few seconds.

PeterDad60 You're* Be* and I'm assuming you meant "attacked?" And I hope I'm never attacked, but I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. My dad was a LEO for 40 years, did FBI academy training and private security, motorcades for politicians and I can tell you that no one knows how "likely" they are to be attacked. Ever had a friend murdered for their tip money while leaving a closing shift at a restaurant? Tell their family that "they weren't very likely to be attacked..." I'd like to see the look the give you. You're more likely to be killed by a pop machine than a shark, but if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, that shark might just kill you. The difference is, a recidivist criminal knows exactly what they're doing when they harm someone.

Great points. As i recall, the much maligned 9mm Silvertip was rated at about 82% one shot stops in the late 80's and early 90's. It was the top of the 9mm heap at the time, and had the most shootings in tbe database. The best 45 ACP HP's at the time were only slightly better, about 85-87%, and 357 has always seemed to be parked right at 96%. Nothing wrong with 40, it seemed to debut in the 80% range and worked up from there due to poularity (statistics- morw shootings = more with good results. Last i heard, it and 45 are about neck and neck in the low 90% range, a whisker below the 357. Hard to go wrong with any of them

How about the 32 cal. There are several sizes the magnum, long, acp it used to be the regular caliber for police in both the usa and europe

Because it's cheap to obtain. And shot placement is easier with less recoil. Doctors have said that because the entry wound is small and the rounds many times ricochet around, puncturing vital organs.... And they have no idea where to sew up the internal bleeding. Usually it won't incapacitate them, but rather take them out of the fight, and later on is when they end up dying.

Everybody! Make your own choice - you'll always be satisfied.

I had a patient awhile back that was retired from a PMC. He said they preferred the .40 S&W because it would put people down better than a 9mm, without necessarily killing them.

22lr, 30-30, 270, and 30-06 are my favorite rifle calibers. 22lr, 45acp and 44mag are my favorite pistol calibers. My favorite shotgun gauge is 12ga 3in magnum. Not to mention i can shoot them all very well, I've never really been recoil sensitive. I grew up shooting 12ga 3" magnum slugs out of a 5 lb single shot with a modified choke, so I'm kinda used to heavy recoil.
