Was this 1991? If so, I was there as well. The promotion was for the Diamonds and Pearls album. My girlfriend at the time worked in the marketing department and told me to get to her office before they shut the doors because Prince was giving a concert. I tried to think of the best lie to tell my boss so I could get out of the office. I ended up just telling him the truth and he was a huge Prince fan as well and covered for me. Unbelievable experience.

Prince? Talented? Absolutely! So versatile on so many instruments. But his genius comes in on the arrangement. He knows how to arrange the simplest of things in a way that makes them sound out of this world level. He has given the fan that actually listens, instead of just hearing, so much to appreciate. The best artists do everything from their ear and their feel. I doubt they ever technically break down their work. "The more you think the less you do"

Got to agree with you. His confidence on guitar that he displayed in "flashy/showy" lines, phrases, and moves, was second to NOBODY, not even Hendrix. Unfortunately, most people didn't pay enough attention to his guitar work to realize how good he was till he was gone.

I was about to say the same thing. You either watched and understood Prince and what a master he is/was or it is just hitting people like a ton of bricks now and they are in awe. People missed out on a lot saying things like that's "not my type of music..." well truly-it is everything you want music to be.
@patrickfoster4586
2 жыл бұрын
Agreed up until you put Hendrix beneath Prince. That is incorrect and Prince himself would've told you so. Jimi was second to no one. Prince was massively influenced by Hendrix and not just his guitar playing but even his clothing style and swagger. Being a guitarist I can assure you both of them were amazing instrumentalists but some of the stuff Hendrix did was almost impossible to emulate. His style is quite a bit more demanding to play than Prince's. This is coming from an old school Prince fan (started buying his albums as a kid with Controversy and saw his Purple Rain tour at the New Orleans Superdome) and till this day I say that 1999 is one of the greatest albums of all time. But guitar skills? Hendrix definately gets the nod. Cheers P[>

Favourite tribute to Prince on his death was, people remember him as the sex thimble but don't always realise he could play the guitar like Jimmy Hendrix's love child.' I saw him on the Brits awards, 2005 or 6 on live TV and I was utterly memorized by his playing. His fingers seemed to move like they were liquid on the frets.

I find professional players amazing. As they chord, their hand looks like it’s moving almost slowly. When I was trying to learn, I was always in a sweat trying to change chords. Lol, there are fingernail marks on the fretboard from being so tense.

I remember this, its Jay Lenos show, but this wasnt even then song he performed live. I like the band, its a mix of 2 of his groups from that time but a step into that more focused rock sound he was moving towards his last few years. You have to notice his strat, since its very rare to see, and it is has an interesting pickup config and a floyd rose. You are dead on on that old vox, got to smash it, for me the new ones i bought dont sound the same but at least with wah wahs they are very simple and you can fix anything on them. I like to keep a pile of them around. He played that solo with utmost style and vibe.

I think my favorite thing about your videos is how deftly you can weave your knowledge of music theory together with passion for “all the shit that just makes ya feel good!” Sometime when hunting for that knowledge, one would instead be met at the gates of Theory-opolis by Stuffy McJazzhead who looks down their nose because the song doesn’t have 40 chord changes over a shifting time signature. When there is a nugget of wisdom wrapped in a catchy pop riff, I call it a “dog pill wrapped in cheese”. The audience may not realize the extent of awesomeness going in their ear, they just know they can shake their asses to it.

Man I can’t stress this enough… it would make my year to see Mike react to the a cappella group the Pentatonix! Many people react to them, half non-musicians and half vocal coaches. Now I know Mike isn’t a “singer” per say, but that’s not why I want to see his reaction. It’s his knowledge of theory that really peaks my interest. For all of the things the Pentatonix are good at (singing, harmonizing, performing), the most underrated is their attention to detail when arranging music. Pleeeease Michael I will pay money to see you react to Pentatonix - Evolution of Michael Jackson! Then maybe Sound of Silence if you’re so inclined. Michael has such a good ear for music and insight into structure… it would be legendary 🤘😎

Prince? Talented?

Interesting you mention the arrangement. I also think Prince's greatest gift is that of composition and arrangement
Thank you for a prince lesson!! If you can find Prince on SNL when Steve Martin was the host. Prince preformed “fury”. It truly was jaw dropping. I filmed it off the TV. Unbelievable.

Cheers P[>
Ive been waiting for a reaction to this video ( and prince in general) for a while excited for this one 🔥 🔥

Whenever I see a video of a Prince performance, especially in smaller venues like this, it reminds me how much I wish I had seen him in concert when he was around. What a complete performer in the very best sense of the word.

Coolest part was this 9 yr old Kid and his dad next to me. Points for dad as I remembered my dad taking me to the Stones in 89 for my first concert. .....btw. .I pretend PRINCE is still alive.
I'm not a musician but my friend who's a great musician explained to me one of the things that makes him great is his ability to sing leads while playing leads like it's nothing. There's no pause, no hesitation and it seems like the guitar is just an entity all on its own without needing the host.
I can't believe you covered this video! I "discovered" it a while ago and I watch it regularly because I'm so fascinated by Prince's playing here.
I like that Prince even perfected Hendrix’s mouth shape when soloing

I read an interview with The Edge from U2. He was asked about this prince song. He said "Wily Bastard" , he meant it as a compliment.
I think this is my favorite reaction yet! Prince was a phenom and true performer in just about every sense. I've never seen someone with such natural rhythm and perfect timing. Can you also react to his performance with his band Third Eye Girl from the Arsenio Hall Show? Truly an epic performance!
We used to go see Prince play at Bunkers bar in Minneapolis when he was 18 years old
So happy to see this...miss getting new music every year from him so much! Thanks for taking a chance.

Another great video. Thanks for watching and analyzing Prince. He always blows my mind.
I really do enjoy immensely your musical break down and explanation of just why bars sound so cool. Your passion for music is infectious. 🎸🎸👍🏻
Wow! Thanks for a piece of Prince I never saw in almost 50 yrs of watching him!
I’m convinced Prince is related to Jimi Hendrix. Absolute genius! The beginning of the song sounds like “I Will Follow” by U2!
Prince was so talented. For me the greatest. He always plays with so much feel. Check out “all critics love Montreux” A whole jazz festival jumping, only Prince could do it.
Prince best overall talent
I love the way you tell us the why someone is good without trying to show off your talent, your videos are fun and exciting I am enjoying them quite a bit and this is coming from a non musician peace mike from Ct

This was fascinating to watch and would love to see more Prince breakdowns. Please
thank u so much Michael 💯💯
Every time I see a video of Prince it makes me miss him more
I love breakdowns like this - for the artist who really studies the craft. Thank you, sir
Such an underrated song!!! Thank you so much for doing this!
I ike so much how you approach your teaching analysises, giving the Real clues. I 've never seen a Master guitar Player like Prince. Not before and not after. There is no one comparable to his talent, Prince is an absolute music school in itself for everyone, just breathing and composing. The mastery to limits that nobody can on guitar is impressive. His guitar is unbeatable
Luv your videos .Check out prince playing "Play that funky music white boy" at the forum. I was at the forum in 2011.

Excellent Demo of a genius . Every Music university/academy should have a Prince semester purely devoted to Prince music.
It seems like he kept it simple, because, it was meant to be a sing along. Bringing the audience along. A song meant to be explored, live! 🥷

Love the guitar and Prince's outfit!

Love the new barn!
Prince understood that he was in show business and in addition to his musical mastery -- he knew how to put on a show. Prince paid attention to the most minute details - body positioning, facial expressions, clothes, hair, colors. The band is flawless. Everything looked so effortless to this dude, what a talent.
Michael, I love Prince! Got to see him in L.A. for the Purple Rain tour. Best concert! And now, I'm starting to love your channel too! Thank you for your bravery in posting this.
