I think the most important thing to realize about Mike is he is only 32 years old. Guys like him and Joe Robinson are grabbing the baton from Tommy and making something that is their own. In the next 30 years there is nothing stopping him from being the next Tommy Emmanuel. Not only is he a great guitarist, but he has the humble personality and approachability that elevate him above just being a "guitar player". Great reaction video, and a great insight into an amazing player.

There's an interview with Dawes somewhere where he describes, as a teenager, looking at his guitar lying on a table. It had been glued together following a break after dropping it, and was drying. As he looked at the fretboard he had a kind of epiphany about how all the notes related, that changed his approach to the instrument in a profound way--obviously. He is amazing...and seems really nice, too.

I don' t know if it is already mentioned here, but in one of his very fine tutorial courses Mike explains his special Instrument ... it is built by the German Luthier Andreas Cuntz. It has a reinforced top as it serves as kind of percussion instrument with an additional scratch pad near the cutaway. This guitar has 4 pickups, I think one piezo an one microfon which can be mixed. The magnetic pickup in the soundhole he uses to overdub some effects like destortion during a loop. As the top of the guitar is thicker he has an additional pickup near the point under his right hand where he imitates kind of snare ... behind the headstock there can be additional banjolike tuners for special effects ... great artist and great teacher

Try listening to Eric Roche (who originally did that version of Jump). Tragically, he died very young, around 15 years ago. It’s a shame he missed out on the whole KZread thing because he definitely would have stood out, much like Mike has. Mike is clearly heavily influenced by him. Eric’s book, released just before he died, the ‘Acoustic Guitar Bible’, is the best guitar tuition book ever printed (for moderate to advanced players). If you want to play like Mike in this video it’s the only book that will help you get there.

For this tune I find it easier for me if I count it in 5/8 and feel the groove as: "ONE-two, ONE-two-three." instead of trying to count all the way to 5 each time around. Seems like 5 (or any odd time signature for that matter) can feel a couple of different ways depending on the riff. It may be just the way my brain works, but I tend to feel the accents first and then extrapolate the time signature second. Of course, that means I am atrocious at poly-rhythms. They often confound me. I understand them, but feeling them has escaped me thus far.

Pumped for this!
Mike is a friend of mine, used to take Skype lessons from him and seen him many times!
Great to watch guys. Many years ago i heard Michael Hedges with "Aerial Boundaries" and i was flabbergasted! Unfortunally he isn't among us anymore but then there is Mike Dawes, Jon Gomm, luca Stricagnoli etc. Its amazing to play like that and i really don't know how to do that ;(. So i listen and enjoy :).
Great reaction video, and a great insight into an amazing player.
keep up the good work man!
Between the polyrhythm and that main riff, got real “schism” vibes. Unreal stuff
Just wow!
Amazing....I could play for 1 million years and never do that...
Mike becomes the instrument , its beautiful to watch but truly rare .
Thankyou Micheal , love your program I’m not a musician.
Saw Mike Dawes and Tommy Emmanuel live in Seattle a couple of months ago. Both mind blowing as you’d expect!
A MAGICIAN.... WHAT A GIFT TO US ALL. NUFF SAID.
I know I'm late to this chat mate, but I saw him live with 25 people on a warm up gig before he went on the Tommy tour..... And he's touring with him again now.... But the lad is a legend, and he is about to embark on a small arts centre tour to give back to what they gave to him and im going again. The bloke is a fucking legend and I feel so lucky to have been in his vicinity!!
It says so much about you Mike that you are willing to review Mike Dawes. I imagine it's like climbing on a rocket to take a ride; you know where it's going, but you aren't sure you are going be there at the end.
amazing
Mike plays this song in DADGAD, with the top string open and the other strings capoed on the 4th fret. And he's playing the melody with hammer ons.

Thanks for that. I was wondering why I was struggling to play it.
Hey Mike....I don't know if it's still out there, but there was a KZread out there where he explains "And Demonstrates" the poly rhythms for this song. Absolutely amazing, and "YES" the title is appropriate....
Awesome song! That little guitar riff starting at 1:38 reminds me of the keyboard riff in "Tom Sawyer" by Rush.
If I remember correctly - It's "DADGAD" capoed forth fret AND THEN the high "E" dropped an additional whole step. There is/was a video out there where he describes this tuning.
Mr. Dawes is the true heir to Michael Hedges
He is unbelievable. Love your analysis. What model is that beautiful PRS you are playing

He reminds me so much of the late Michael Hedges!
There is playing guitar and there is what Mike Dawes does. The two are not the same.

I love Mike Dawes and the way you react to him. He’s a unique talent and a gifted player but I’m still waiting for you to react to The Tragically Hip. C’mon man, you said you would. Thanks.

Looking super healthy man man
You nailed it on the head right there at 4:12. I too struggle with odd timings like this. Apparently that's a western thing. I heard once many years ago, that Europeans do much better with oddly timed Beats then North Americans do. I forget what the reasons were, but it was an interesting study. Anyway, back to the video LOL
Love your videos Michael and this is one of the best. Mike Dawes is a phenomena. At 4:40 you say "Capo on the 2nd fret"? I look at the inset window and it's clearly on the 4th fret! Am I missing something?
Im curious to see your take on "Rylynn by Andy McKee" the video of him him in a red shirt is, in my opinion, his best version. I would love to see your take on it and see how you break it down.. stunning song I think you'll enjoy

What kind of guitar strings do you use?
It's DADGAD tuning, one of my favorite tunings of all time, capo 4th with an open first string
Hello Michael! I watched some of your videos recently and I really enjoy your way of analyzing and explaining stuff. You have my sub ;) I'd love to see your thoughts on some videos of Marcin. He has both arrangements and originals in his 'collection'. Maybe you can browse through it to find out what will be most interesting for you. I can recommend "Fly Me To The Moon - Marcin (Live Solo Guitar)" or "Marcin - BABA YAGA (Official Video)" to start with.
PLEASE for the love of god make a react video on philip sayce performance. Doesn't matter which one, everything live is gold.
Always love your videos, BUT I MUST say.....It takes big brass kohoneys to even attempt to follow this in standard tuning....GREAT JOB!
Mike plays a lot in DADGAD. I wouldn't be surprised to find that is what this is

Michael, could you please take a look at Rainbow Kitten Surprise? This band is slowly gathering steam and I'm not sure if there's any particular guitar virtuosity going on, but they're fantastic and I'd like to have a musician explain why, maybe. Look at "Devil Like Me."
Mike is mind blowing. His version of van Halen jump is one of the best I've ever heard.

@@mikedawesofficial my go to book as well Mike….along with his brilliant album With These Hands. I know TE spoke highly of him and even did the forward for the tuition book. Also, remember Newton Faulkner? Pretty sure he was a student of Eric’s. What a guitar teacher to have!
When it got to the end I started to get nervous. I can't count how many times I've gotten this great take (for me anyways) only to screw it up right at the end.
I notice that many people who can play like this have really long fingers. Steve Vai comes to mind. I'm not knocking the talent, because that is needed for sure.
Please check out Kevin Blake Godwin “Seven” and Travis Bowman “torcher chamber”… both good friends with Mike Daws.. Both guys highly talented and hugely underrated!!!🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
The New Tommy 👌🏻

I just find it annoying when players are thumping and smacking their instrument. Just can't get into it.
Am I crazy or does this sound very Toolish?
