    Interestingly. Keith and John was better than Brad and John. I think Brad was too alien to John. I’m not sure but it wasn’t as good as it was on paper, and KUJM was better. Same can go for the BPKU collaboration...a bit of a let down. Still good but expectations were high I guess.

    I remember the first time I heard the album version of this song. When it got to the guitar solo at the end, the way it comes in all slow and bendy, I remember thinking "this is what it sounds like when an instrument cries." That whole end section is like grief welling up inside you, and you try to push it back down but it can't be denied and finally bursts out of your chest. The way Keith expresses those emotions through his guitar is something I didn't think was possible for non-classical musicians. I still have trouble listening to that song sometimes because of what it makes me feel.

    I saw Keith Urban live in '08 and when he did this song it gave me goose bumps. I got hooked on him in '05 after seeing him in concert on CMT. I went out and bought the DVD of this concert ('Livin' Right Now') a few months later and was blown away by him being such a complete artist. As an artist, I put him in the same classification as Brad Paisley and John Mayer, although Mayer is honestly in a class all his own. If I'm going on a road trip and I can bring music from and 3 artists it's going to be a great drive listening to those three.

    Man, I've watched a decent number of your breakdowns and, to be frank, it's often far over my head. I don't play guitar and don't grasp all the music theory and progression talk. That being said, I was pumped to see you doing this song. I've always loved Keith Urban and this song in particular. That lead solo is much more than just an exhibition of guitar mastery. It serves a very important role in the song. It's very much an additional verse. Throughout the first two verses of the song, the song is speaking to the "Stupid Boy" ("You stupid boy, you always had to be right"). After the bridge, the song becomes the perspective of the "Stupid Boy" ("Oh, I'm the same ole, same ole stupid boy") and he realizes that she's gone. In comes the guitar solo and it comes in very mournful and slow - almost expressing grief. As the solo builds and the playing gets faster, the sound begins to express more begging - almost saying "please, please don't go." That's just my take but I think it's a masterful guitar solo that continues the lyric of the song without using words. I've always thought that Vince Gill did this the best (at least in country music) but Keith Urban is right up there.

  • @jakeclark9126

    @jakeclark9126

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@erikhartley2494 I’ll preface this by saying that a lot of what Keith Urban does so well in Stupid Boy is using his guitar to tell part of the story. Vince Gill does this incredibly well in a lot of his ballads. I’d suggest watching Vince Gill’s live version of “Go Rest High on that Mountain” in his tribute to George Jones. He struggles to even sing the lyrics but gets to the solo and it’s clear that he speaks through his guitar and it completes settles his emotions. Amazing to see. As far as Vince Gill solos in non-ballads, watch Oklahoma Borderline. There’s a live version on YT where he also talks about Mark Knopfler (who is an amazing guitarist in his own right) asking him if he wanted to join Dire Straits. A second song of Vince Gill’s to listen to is Liza Jane. Find the live version of him with The Players.

    I wish Keith Urban’s music was still like this. His older records are fantastic, full of good catchy-pop country songs but great production. He’s had a few good songs in the last decade but overall his last two albums have just been a wreck in my opinion. Ripcord was good, just wish it had a real drummer on it. He’s one of my favourites so I sure hope he leans towards what made him great in the first place.

    I'm exactly in the same boat. He's had a handful of good songs since Ripcord but it's not quite the same. He's gone a bit too techno and away from the natural instrument sound which is a shame. Love Pain is easily my favourite album.

    I've got to agree. Graffiti U and his latest I think are good but nowhere near the older music. I like his acoustic music the best but the heavier rock guitar is amazing as Keith is a virtuoso guitarist. I love how songs like this progress. Personal, intimate, then building to a wide stage to punch the key part of the story, then back to a tight intimate setting again to close, and almost make you reflect on what you already heard. I feel like every time I listen to Keith's live performances, I find something new to blow my mind in regard to how he's nailing vocals and being a fantastic guitar player.

    My favorite videos that you do have been the country/folk/bluegrass genres. The simplicity of the progressions but the intentional layering of elements in those genres gives the music an emotional pull that is unparalleled (blues would fit into that group as well). Keep up the good work! I'd love to hear you react to an old Waylon Jennings tune called "I've always been crazy" or maybe one of the Merle Haggard classics (workin' man blues would be killer)

    After watching this concert over & over again. The "Love Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing" world tour was I think arguably some of Keith's finest performances to date. It was his 1st tour after spending 3 month's in rehab. He was clean & the emotion that he shared was outstanding, even shedding tears through performances of different song's. Also this group of muso's he had we're the best I've ever seen him with.

    Should see the crossroads song Don’t let me down he did with John Mayer. You’d find it on choicenation page on KZread. It’s a live performance. Awesome. I’m moved to tears and you’ll know when those moments happen in the song.

    They don't get any better than Keith Urban. With that said, I'm so glad you talked about his touring band. Those guys are some of the best Nashville has to offer. It's worth the ticket just to hear them do their thing.

    Like so many on here I love his older stuff. Wish he still recorded those type songs. He's still one of my favorites and really rocks live. The John Mayer crossroads is great but look up Walking in the country from crossroads with John Fogerty...amazing solo. He's an awesome guitar player and a really nice guy.
