I saw him live in Amsterdam in 75 or 76, and he was by far the most charismatic artist I have ever seen. His entire personality washed over the audience like a wave. To this day it is the greatest concert I have ever been to.

you must be joking. If you call yourself a "reggae guitarist", then surely you need to be honest and call out the truth. He's not playing any of it the way it should be. That's the problem: Too many claiming to be "reggae" musicians, let stuff like this go in the name of pacivity. Reggae has a standard like any other music and deserves excellence as well.

I was privileged to see him twice, once in Philly and a few years later in Seattle: Marley was a living prophet and he brought every soul into transcendent communion. We surely miss him this week. So privileged indeed.

There are very few songs and fewer artists that evoke such an emotional response in me than Bob Marley and War! This song takes me back to my youth and I'm flooded with memories of being overwhelmed by his message and the devout following that ensued. We had parties totally dedicated to the One 'N' Only Bob Marley and we knew all the words, singing and dancing through the night! What a special era that was!!!

I fell in love with uncle Bob's music when I was just a kid around 10 years of age. I couldn't read or write music or know the music terminologies, but I knew then exactly what you're talking about now. How every instrument, if listened to individually, told a story, which enhanced the whole story and message. And when peiced together, actually created an image in the mind that accompanied the message or meaning of the lyrics, where the overall sound and feel of the song, suited the words and the meaning. And the icing on the cake was his perfect voice, sung from the heart with full intent and meaning. At the age of 10 I couldn't find any other musician that could do all that. Every song was equally and carefully constructed. He's the only artist I can truly say doesn't have a bad song that I cannot listen to. Even to this day there is probably only a handful of musicians that manages to do that. Most only have 1 or the other, not the full package.

What I love about videos like this.....is that I remember a time when reggae music was often derided in the west as toy music, or gimmick music, played by people who had no real musical skill. Of course people like me knew better. Nowadays, many musicians now give the music the credit it deserves. Part of being a good musician is to learn, study, and appreciate other musical styles, it enriches your craft and ultimately makes you better at what you do.

The lyrics are from a section of a speech Haile Selassie made on 4 Oct 1963 to the United Nations General Assembly. The 2 key points were on "disarmament" and "establishment of true equality among men". There is a long preamble but the penultimate paragraph before he launches into "Until the philopsophy...." is the following: "In the United States of America, the administration of President Kennedy is leading a vigorous attack to eradicate the remaining vestige of racial discrimination from this country. We know that this conflict will be won and that right will triumph. In this time of trial, these efforts should be encouraged and assisted, and we should lend our sympathy and support to the American Government today." 57 years later.... the KKK has taken over the White House. Marley also said "if you know your history, then you would know where you coming from".

You've done it again Michael. This is another accurate analysis of all aspects of the music, lyrics, stage performance, aims and intentions of lead and backup singers and band, and the harmony and collective outcomes of the meeting of all of those inputs.

Absolutely brilliant review! I was 17 when this song came out and all my friends and I devoured the Rastaman Vibration album, learning all the words off by hard. For almost a year, we listened almost exclusively to Bob! (It was also the height of the Anti-Apartheid movement).

So many people equate Marley and his music with weed. But he has a consistent message in his music....and it's as powerful as his music. One love. I've been in love with his music for probably 30 of my 45 years. Great episode!!

As a teenager angry at the injustices in the world loved Marley. He was one of a kind. Sadly I'm in my late 40's and had forgot the anger that used to burn inside me. Thank you for relighting that flame. Bob Marley is and will always be a religious experience. If you are the religious type then it is like he is channelling the word of God to us all. We all know what is right and wrong, good and bad, it is up to us to choose the path.
