The feedback from the hearing aid is a great thing that you never see in a movie deaf person.

You're such a huge help! I've been writing a fantasy horror with a half deaf investigator mage as a main character. In my opinion, deaf mages could still have a upper hand if they could just lip read the spell their opponent were casting. But your advice enlights how to limit this skill. Great advice!

I am actually halfway through writing a book with a main character who has cochlear implants so having feedback from someone who uses one is super helpful! Thank you so much for making this video!!

Hi nelle❤this was the most informative video yet! I could have "listened" deaf pun for an hour as it was so good! Most tv shows/films have an advisor,if its a police drama they get a retired police officer for accuracy! Medical dramas get a medical consultant, you know where i am coming from! But what i would love to know do TV shows/ films with a main deaf character have a deaf advisor? But i am sorry to say i have not seen many shows with deaf actors! I am an expert on hearing aids, like if it said UP it means ultra power! Unless your deaf yourself you dont know what different strengths of hearing aids there are just like there are different strengths in glasses! I know very little about cochlear implants, only what i have read & what you have told us! As for speech it does depend on how long you have been deaf or how severe it is! Being profoundly deaf i am told my speech is bad,i miss off letters on a word etc! You said your speech does change with the implant out! So does that mean with an implant you can hear your own voice? At around 17mins you were playing with your hearing aid & it seemed like the feedback was bad as you pulled a face that said stop the feedback! With your implant in can you hear hearing aid feedback? I can picture a deaf person with hearing aids having a romantic kiss & the director keep calling cut as the feedback screams out from each aid! When hearing aids/CI's are out it can be nice with maybe total silence or very lonely when your in a silent world! I am one of the lucky ones to lose my hearing gradually but it still comes as a shock when one day you wake up & there is just a few muffled sounds! I am thankful to the NHS for my hearing aids, imagine nelle if you had to pay for both CI's? Its hard enough finding money for the 2nd! Speaking of which, when you do raise enough money will you get the same make as you have now or maybe see if the other makes are cheaper? Its good you are still using that hearing aid as i know the consultant wondered why you were still using it! I am no expert but surely using a hearing aid will stimulate the auditory processing nerve ready for the implant! I hope come the autumn you will have raised enough money to get the other ear implanted! I believe it will help hence why i try & donate when i can! The first £10000 is within touching distance! 💗💗

important to add hearing aids dont make everything louder, just the frequencies the deaf person cant hear as well. thats why shouting at us doesn't work but HAs do. if everything gets louder speech doesn't get any clearer

  • @nellefindlay

    @nellefindlay

    9 күн бұрын

Yes, this is right. The old analogue hearing aids in the 80s and 90s used to just make everything louder, but modern hearing aids are programmed specifically to the correct frequencies to create a more balanced sound which improves speech understanding.

HELLO THANKS SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO, THIS INFO IS HELPING ME OUT A LOT. ALSO, I'M NOT TYPING LIKE THIS TO YELL, I'M LEGALLY BLIND, SO THIS HELPS ME SEE THE LETTERS BETTER, I KNOW THERE ARE OTHER WAYS OF DOING IT, BUT THIS ONE IS MY PERSONAL METHOD, THANKS. ALSO, PLEASE FORGIVE ANY GRAMMAR OR SPELLING ERRORS, AS THOSE AREN'T MY STRONG SUITS, THANKS AGAIN. I'M NOT HARD OF HEARING OR DEAF, NOR DO I KNOW TOO MANY PEOPLE WHO ARE, BUT I'M OBVIOUSLY TO WRITE A YOUNG ADULT CHARACTER WHO IS HARD OF HEARING-(I KNOW "HEARING IMPAIRED" IS MAINLY LOOKED DOWN UPON SO I WON'T USE THAT). I AM KIND OF GLAD I AT LEAST HAVE SOME THINGS GOING FOR MY STORY LIKE I KNEW HEARING AIDS AND COCHLEAR IMPLANTS DON'T CURE YOU, AND NOT EVERYONE KNOWS ASL AND DOESN'T LIP READ WELL. AND THAT DOCTORS DON'T HAVE A CERTAIN TIME AS TO WHEN/IF GOD FORBID SOMEONE WILL GO DEAF/HOH (THE SAME GOES FOR OTHER "DISABILITIES" AS WELL). HOWEVER, I DO NEED TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TYPE OF HEARING LOSS SHE HAS TBH...FOR SOME REASON I'M HAVING A HARD TIME WITH THAT, AND IDK WHY. BUT I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS AND PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, THAT I AM NOT TRYING TO LOOK RUDE WHEN I ASK THESE...PLEASE BEAR WITH ME AS THIS IS A LONG ESSAY, I APOLOGIZE FOR IT IN ADVANCE. #1: FORGIVE ME IF THIS SEEMS SILLY TO ASK BUT...DOES ANYONE TAKE LIFELONG MEDICINE (LIKE SOME KIND OF EAR DROPS OR ANYTHING)? I'M NOT TRYING TO COMPARE CONDITIONS, BUT...(AND I KNOW IT'S NOT THE SAME, AT ALL), BUT I TAKE EYE DROPS FOR GLAUCOMA, AND THOUGH I DOUBT IT'S LIKE THIS...DO THEY TAKE ANYTHING TO PREVENT IT FROM GETTING WORSE? I KNOW HOH IS THE CORRECT TERM, AND I'M ONLY ASKING THIS BECAUSE I'VE SEEN OTHER HARD-OF-HEARING PPL SAY IT, BUT...CAN MY CHARACTER BE OKAY WITH THAT TERM (AS FAR AS TALKING ABOUT HERSELF GOES)? (I'M ASKING THIS BECAUSE I'VE BEEN CALLED OUT FOR ACCIDENTLY USING IT IN A SUBREDDIT, ALONG WITH "HEARING LOSS"). ALSO #2: CAN IT MAKE SENSE FOR MY CHARACTER (AND HER FRIENDS/FAMILY THAT KNOW IT)-TO ONLY USE ASL IF/WHEN HER HEARING AIDS ARE OUT/OR NOT WORKING RIGHT? LIKE MAYBE-(AND I KNOW SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT LIKE THIS). BUT CAN SHE BE...KIND OF SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT HOW SHE THINKS SHE SOUNDS WITH THEM OUT? SO MAYBE SHE CHOOSES NOT TO SPEAK? (EVEN IF SHE'S BEEN HOH HER WHOLE LIFE)? ALSO ON THAT NOTE, #3: HOW-(IF AT ALL) SHOULD I DESCRIBE HER VOICE IF IT ALTRERED? WHAT'S A NICE WAY TO PUT IT? (FOR EXAMPLE: "SHE CANNOT TELL IF HER VOICE SOUNDS A BIT...OFF OR NOT"). IS THAT RUDE? ALSO WOULDN'T IT BE RUDE OF ME IF SHE WANTED/COULD GET SMALLER HEARING AID STYLES (LIKE MAYBE SHE'S A BIT SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT THEM FOR A BIT TOO, EVEN IF AGAIN, SHE HAD THEM FOR A WHILE)? AND WHEN HEARING AIDS START TO GO BAD, (I'VE READ THAT THEY'LL FLUCTUATE SOMETIMES AMONG SOME OTHER THINGS), WILL THEY STILL HAVE DAYS WHERE THEY'LL PERFORM GREAT AND BAD THE NEXT? OR IS IT...A RAPID DELCINE? AND COULD SHE MISTAKE THEM BEING BAD FOR JUST PARTS BEING BROKEN OR HER HEARING GETTING WORSE? #4: CAN/SHOULD I ACTUALLY WRITE...DARE I SAY, DIFFERENT SPEECH/DILAOUG IF THAT MAKES SENSE? (LIKE HAVE WORDS LOOK/BE SPELLED DIFFERENT)? OR SHOULD I JUST LEAVE THEM AS NORMAL? (I'M ASSUMING THE LATTER, BUT I'M JUST ASKING ANYWAY). AGAIN SORRY IF I AM ACTING RUDE, I'M NOT TRYING TO. ALSO, RELATED TO THE SECOND QUESTION, #5: CAN SOME PEOPLE-(LIKE SOME FAMILY MEMBERS OR SOMETHING). SOME ARE ANNOYED THAT SHE MITE BRING UP WANTING THEM TO LEARN ASL? (LIKE MAYBE THEY CLAIM "JUST LIP READ" OR "I'M TOO BUSY TO LEARN IT"). JUST TO CLARIFY, (AND I'M SORRY IF THIS IS A RUDE STERIOYTYPE, BUT SOME OF THEM ARE RITCH-SPILED SNOBS), AND THEY CLAIM STUFF LIKE THAT, SO...DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? ON THAT NOTE, WOULD IT BE OKAY IF I HAVE HER ADDRESS AND TRY TO DEBUNK A FEW THINGS IN MY STORY? (LIKE THE LIP READING IS NOT ALWAYS ACCURATE, AND NOT EVERYONE KNOWS ASL), OR OTHER LESS...DARE I SAY: "OBVIOUS" THINGS? AND IF SHE'S NOT A PART OF THE DEAF COMMUNITY/OR SHE DOESN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT? (PLEASE KEEP IN MIND MOST OF MY STORY WILL BE POST APOCLOTYPCI). SO...EVEN IF I SHOW SOME PREACPOLOCTYIC BITS...IS THAT A BAD THING? (I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE HER NTO A APRT OF IT)...I'M JUST ASKING SINCE SHE GREW UP IN A HEARING FAMILY AND I KNOW SOME PEOPLE AREN'T IN THE COMMUNITY AT ALL. QUESTION #6: I AGAIN AM NOT TRYING TO PULL A PITY CARD OR BE A JERK, BUT...WOULD I LOOK LIKE AN A-HOLE IF I HAD MY CHARACTER GO THROUGH SOME FAVORITISM IN HER FAMILY? HER PARENTS FAVOR HER SISTER OVER HER), AND MAYBE SHE WONDERS IF IT'S BECAUSE SHE'S-(MAYBE)-A STEPCHILD? OR...AGAIN I'M NOT TRYING TO BE NEAN-BUT MAYBE SHE SOMETIMES WONDERS IF IT IS BECAUSE SHE IS WHO SHE IS? (LIKE HOW SOME PEOPLE SEE "HEARING LOSS" AS AN IMPAIRMENT), DOES THAT MAKE SINCE? OR AM I BEING A PRICK? AND I'M NOT SURE IF THIS ONE WILL BE INCLUDED BUT THIS GOES FOR "DISABLED" PEOPLE AS A WHOLE, QUESTION #7: MY STORY IS ABOUT THEM FIGHTING VAMPIRES AND...SAY I HAVE THEM BE TURNED. WHAT IF I HAVE...EITHER THEY ARE NOT "CURED" MIRICALLY, AND THEY EITHER WRE FORCED TO TURN OR DIE. OR MAYBE THEY THOUGHT IT WOULD HELP THEIR FRIENDS (NOT THAT THEY THOUGHT THEY USELESS IF THEY DIDN'T TURN). BUT SYA I HAVE A MAN IN A WHEELCHAIR, AND HE'S TURNED, AND MYABE HE CAN WALK BUT...ONLY FOR CERTAIN PERIODS, AND EACH VAMP HAS THEIR OWN UNIQUE SET OF POWERS BASED ON CERTAIN THINGS/FACTORS. WOULD PEOPLE STILL FIND IT OFFENSIVE? THANKS FOR READING, SO SORRY IF ANYONE FOUND ANY OF THIS OFFENSIVE, HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR Y'ALL, AND AGAIN SO SORRY FOR THE LONG ESSAY/BAD GRAMMAR IF ANY IS PRESENT.

HI THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENT, I'LL DO MY BEST TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS AS BEST AS I CAN. #1 USUALLY NO, BUT IF THE PERSON GETS A LOT OF EAR INFECTIONS THEN MAYBE. FOR A SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS (WHICH IS THE MOST COMMON TYPE) THE PART OF THE EAR DAMAGED IS SO DEEP INSIDE, THAT EAR DROPS WOULDN'T HAVE ANY AFFECT. PEOPLE CAN BE OKAY WITH ANY TERM TO REFER TO THEMSELVES, IN GENERAL, THE MOST ACCEPTED TERMS CURRENTLY ARE DEAF OR HARD OF HEARING. #2 THAT COULD MAKE SENSE, BUT MOST PEOPLE DON'T TEND TO SOUND THAT DIFFERENT WITHOUT THEIR HEARING AIDS, USUALLY THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BUT IT'S PRETTY SLIGHT. THAT SAID, PEOPLE CAN BE SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT LITERALLY ANYTHING WHETHER OR NOT IT MAKES SENSE. IT DOES HOWEVER MAKE SENSE FOR HER TO USE ASL WHEN SHE ISN'T WEARING HER HEARING AIDS SO PEOPLE DON'T KEEP FORGETTING THAT SHE CAN'T HEAR THEM. #3 I WOULD USE THE TERM 'DEAF ACCENT'. LOTS OF PEOPLE PREFER SMALLER HEARING AID STYLES. AGAIN, PEOPLE CAN BE SELF-CONSCIOUS OF ANYTHING. THE ONLY THING IS YOU NEED TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT IT IS AN INDIVIDUAL INSECURITY, NOT SOMETHING THAT OTHER DEAF/HOH PEOPLE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF. E.G. "SHE WAS ASHAMED OF HER UGLY HEARING AIDS" SOUNDS RUDE "SHE STILL FELT SELF-CONSCIOUS OF HER HEARING AIDS DESPITE KNOWING THAT THERE WAS NO REASON TO BE ASHAMED OF THEM" SOUNDS BETTER. I'VE NEVER HAD HEARING AIDS DIE RANDOMLY (EXCEPT FOR THE BATTERY RUNNING OUT) SO I DON'T REALLY KNOW HOW THAT WOULD BE. IT'S ABSOLUTELY FINE FOR HER TO TALK ABOUT HER EXPERIENCES AND SPREAD DEAF AWARENESS WHETHER OR NOT SHE IS PART OF THE DEAF COMMUNITY, JUST MAKE SURE THE INFORMATION IS ACCURATE. #6 THIS ISN'T REALLY AN AREA I'M IN A POSITION TO TALK ABOUT, BUT FAVOURITISM DEFINITELY HAPPENS IN SOME FAMILIES SO I DON'T SEE ANY REASON YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT IT. IT'S DEFINITELY COMMON FOR DEAF PEOPLE TO FEEL LEFT OUT OF THEIR FAMILY EVEN IF THE FAMILY IS TRYING TO INCLUDE THEM. MY PERSONAL VIEW IS THAT IT'S KIND OF A BIT TACKY TO HAVE DISABLED PEOPLE RANDOMLY CURED UNLESS IT REALLY MAKES SENSE FOR THE STORY (I THINK AVATAR DID IT WELL, BUT IT DOES STILL FEEL A BIT CHEAP). HOW I WOULD SPICE UP THE TROPE WOULD PERHAPS BE LIKE TURNING SOMEONE INTO A VAMPIRE TO TRY AND CURE THEM, BUT IT DOESN'T WORK AND SEE HOW THE PERSON LEARNS TO ACCEPT IT. OR MAYBE THE PERSON IS NOT ANTICIPATING BEING CURED AND BEING COMPLETELY UNPREPARED FOR IT AND HAVING MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT IT. OR MAYBE THE PERSON DOESN'T WANT TO BE TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE, BUT THEY HAVE TO BE TO SAVE THEIR LIFE, BUT THEY ARE SUPER UPSET ABOUT BEING TURNED INTO A VAMPIRE, DESPITE BEING 'CURED', BUT OTHER PEOPLE THINK THEY SHOULD BE HAPPY 'BECAUSE AT LEAST THEY'RE NOT DISABLED ANY MORE'. I THINK PUTTING A TWIST INTO THE TROPE TO ADD A BIT OF NUANCE IS DEFINITELY A GOOD IDEA. FOR ME, HAVING THE PERSON BE HALF-CURED SEEMS A BIT INDECISIVE. I HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL!

THANK U FOR BEING SO UNDERSTANDING AND RESPONDING WHEN U CAN, THESE HELPED ME OUT SO MUCH. :D I REALLY HOPE NONE OF THIS OFFENDED U. :) ALSO, I AM SO SORRY FOR THE LATE REPLY I WASN'T TRYING TO BE RUDE, I LOST INTERNET CONNECTION FOR A FEW DAYS, GOT IT BACK NOW THANK GOD LOL. ANYWAY, I KNOW THIS AIN'T REPLYING TO ALL OF THE ANSWERS, BUT JUST SOME MAJOR ONES REAL QUICK. (I MAY ADD ANOTHER REPLY LATER WHEN I CAN). ABOUT THE EAR DROPS/INFECTIONS, THANKS FOR TELLING ME THAT, I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS COMMON TO GET/NEED EAR DROPS UNLESS U HAVE/HAD AN INFECTION. ON THAT NOTE, ARE PEOPLE WHO HAVE "SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS" MORE PRONE TO GETTING EAR INFECTIONS OR NOT? JUST CURIOUS. ABOUT THE SELF-CONSIOUS THING, JUST SO WE'RE CLEAR, I WASN'T GONNA PLAN ON WORDING IT IN SUCH A HARSH MANNER, SO NO WORRIES. ALSO GOOD THING ABOUT THE ASL BIT, I THOUGHT THAT MADE SENSE. CURIOUS SPEAKING OF ALL THIS, FOR FUTURE REFS AND RESEARCH, I AIN'T TRYING TO BE RUDE BUT...DO YOU KNOW HOW OFTEN MOST HOH PEOPLE HAVE TO ASK SOMEONE TO REPEAT THEMSELVES WHEN THEY'RE HEARING AIDS ARE IN, V.S. WHEN THEY'RE OUT? DOES THAT MAKE SINCE? SORRY IF I ASKED THIS BEFORE, I'M JUST TRYING TO BE SURE. I MEAN I KNOW HEARING AIDS DO NOT CURE HEARING LOSS, SO OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE WOULD STILL HAVE SOME ISSUES HEARING CERTAIN THINGS FROM TIME TO TIME. BUT...AGAIN, DO YOU KNOW HOW OFTEN THAT HAPPENS FOR THEM WHEN THEIR DEVICES ARE IN AND WORKING RIGHT? OR DOES THAT DIFFER FROM PERSON TO PERSON? AND OF COURSE, DOES IT ALSO DEPEND ON WHAT HEARING AIDS TYPES/BRANDS THEY HAVE? ALSO ON THE "VOICE" BIT, THE "DEAF ACCENT" DOES SEEM TO BE A BIT NICER, ALSO I AM AWARE THAT SOME PEOPLE DON'T HAVE ONE WHEN THEIR DEVICES ARE OUT. BUT AGAIN, I'VE FOUND OUT THAT, YES, OTHERS DO. EVERYONE'S DIFFERENT AND THEIR AIN'T NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. ON THE VAMERISUM, SOME PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME THAT IT'S NOT A "CURE" WHEN YOU THINK OF IT, SINCE THEY HAVE TO DRINK BLOOD AND HAVE THEIR OWN WEAKNESSES SEEM WORSE THAN BEING HUMAN. SO THOSE ISSUES, COUPLED WITH POSSIBLY WITH SOMETHING, LIKE WHAT U SAID-(ABOUT IT NOT CURING ALL DISABILITIES). IT MITE MAKE A GOOD TWIST ON IT IF I NEED/WANT ONE. PLUS MIXED FEELINGS WILL MAKE IT BETTER FOR THE STORY OR WORSE FOR THEM, HECK IT COULD EVEN SERVE AS A LESSON NOT TO BE "CURED" IF YOU ARE HAPPY WITH YOURSELF, OR TO ASSUME SOMEONE IS UNHAPPY BECAUSE THEY'RE DISABELED. HOPE THAT DID NTO SOUDN RUDE LOL.

I’m writing a science-fantasy story whose protagonist has general health issues, some being due to her military background and others are just things she was born with. She lost her hearing during her late teens and is now hard of hearing. Most groups in my world were formerly normal humans, but evolved (pseudo-scientifically, lol) to have certain supernatural abilities. For example Kasumi (my prota) has more densely packed electrocytes, what makes her body able to store electricity, her skeletal structure is enhanced by metal and minerals that conduct electricity and her hair also works as a lightning conductor, etc. (There are a lot more anatomical changes, but I think you get the idea) I think due to that, the Cochlear Implants would actually work better for her personally. It would just fit with the overall theme. Now my question is, if there are certain daily things I could hint at? Like for example, I’m Autistic and I have the daily problem of being hesitant to not just interact with people, but am already overstimulated at complicated situations when I have to cross the street and similar. Then it is visible in certain stiff movements I make (like stopping or delaying). I generally move my head more and get startled easier by sounds or movements in my surroundings etc. Is there an equivalent with deaf and hard of hearing people? Obviously it will vary from person to person, but just some ideas of things I could include? It’s mostly for the visual storytelling, because most disabilities or other conditions that aren’t the norm in fantasy are very quickly forgotten, since books are not a visual medium. The story isn’t about her disability, it’s more about found family in a pirate setting and finally moving on after traumatic experiences, but I think little details can make the characters more realistic, so that’s where the question came from.

  • @nellefindlay

Hi, thank you for your comment. That sounds really cool. I think it would be really good to clear up the level of hearing your protagonist has since if she has cochlear implants, she would most likely be totally deaf without them (for some reason, levels of hearing loss are determined by your hearing without devices so a person who can hear pretty well with cochlear implants is still considered profoundly deaf). While a lot of people (including me) use 'deaf' and 'hard of hearing' pretty interchangeably, for writing it's probably best to stick with the most medically accepted definitions. I'm also Autistic (snap!), and I completely get what you're talking about. Of course if Kasumi has super futuristic hearing technology combined with supernatural abilities, the things I do might not be applicable to her so obviously, please apply your creativity where appropriate. Bearing that in mind, these are the things that I tend to do because of my hearing loss: - Not having great control of the volume of my voice. - Not being able to recognise voices. - I only have usable hearing on one side (through my CI) so I prefer people to stand on that side or will turn my head so I can hear them from my better ear. This is very noticeable when I'm driving because I can't turn my head because I need to look at the road so I can't hear the person in the passenger seat next to me very well. - I can't hear stuff very far away or very quiet sounds. - Not being able to hear in background noise and avoiding noisy places. - If people try to talk to me in a noisy place, where hearing people often talk directly into each other's ears, I need the other person to stand back so I can read their lips. - Always carrying spare batteries/ cables. My CI has a rechargeable battery so I recharge it overnight. (If you want to specifically see what the chargers and stuff look like and how they work, check out the CI manufacturers youtube channels they are Med El, Cochlear, and Advanced Bionics). - Being very careful to not get the processors wet so wearing a hood in the rain etc. My CI has the option for a waterproof case so I have the option of being able to hear when doing things that involve water. - The coil on the processor is magnetic so a lot of people if they take them off for a break will tend to stick them to metal surfaces like the fridge. - Sometimes needing breaks from sound and taking hearing devices off. Hopefully these are the right sort of details that can make Kasumi's hearing loss feel more like a natural part of her life, rather than just some gimmick added to tick a diversity box, without it being a central part of the plot. Please let me know where I can read your story when it's finished, it sounds like it will be great. :)

Hi! I only now saw the response, but thank you! That was definitely what I was looking for! Alright, the level of hearing part, of her probably being unable to hear at all would still completely work with everything I’ve written so far (what is only about 30 pages, but it’s actively ongoing so I’ll keep that in mind for the next chapters!), so I’ll just change some words and it’ll be cleared up! It would actually even separate the character voices a bit more, due to the different senses applied in most of the text. (That’s actually quite interesting, I don’t know how I thought it would have been determined, but it wasn’t that.) Ok, then I guess I’ll go with “deaf”. (I mostly used those two, because of some articles I’ve read about the topic and writing deaf characters. Idk, it’s a lot and I guess I’ll keep mixing stuff up or misunderstand for now, but it’s the first draft. Until the final book releases I can always come back and change the writing.) Oh cool! That’s good, sometimes it’s hard to put my thoughts into the right words if not in a fictional context so I’m happy it came across. :D I wouldn’t say they have all that much more futuristic technology than we do, maybe in the parts of defense towards sea monsters in order to safely travel, but most of it should be around our knowledge, maybe a few decades further into the future, but no more (if anything it’ll be inspired by some cool ideas people of the past had of what the 2000s would look like technology wise). But considering the difference in worlds it has a bit of a different focus if it is more futuristic looking (yk, like preparations around the sea beasts or travel on a sea of stars). Still there will be parts I can probably apply some creativity, especially regarding her abilities and how she would use them with her disabilities. I will definitely use quite a lot if not all of them! Especially sticking out were those points: “Not being able to recognize voices” could be interesting for how the crew communicates on deck, especially if she as a captain has to organize stuff. I could probably look over my notes on her and Jewgraf’s (her 1. Officer/Vice Captain) tasks and how they split them. “I only have usable hearing on one side (through my CI) so I prefer people to stand on that side or will turn my head so I can hear them from my better ear.” The example of driving could be actually applicable to stirring the ship. Beside it being quite convenient that Jewgraf is introduced to have a rather loud voice, maybe I could apply this part, by him knowing her pretty well from their time working together and so on him always going to the side she can hear with, even if he stood somewhere else before and her doing the same if she wants to talk to him. “Not being able to hear in background noise and avoiding noisy places” How do noisy places sound like to you? Especially if background noise is filtered out. (I’ll definitely check out those YT channels, while I’m drawing the next time!) “Being very careful to not get the processors wet[…]” Could be a great opportunity for her using her abilities to shield them from the rain! She herself doesn’t like getting wet all that much, because she gets sick easily, so she could probably enable a sort of magnetic field via electricity to stay dry. Plus she has to recharge herself, lol. “The coil of the processor is magnetic so a lot of people if they take them off for a break will tend to stick them to metal surfaces like the fridge.” I think you mentioned that one in the video as well, so I thought even then, that it would be something she would totally do. Probably even pulling it off and letting it go for it to snap back to stick to the metal over and over again, when she’s bored. (If that wouldn’t destroy it, that is. I mean I don’t know how durable the processors are) “Sometimes needing breaks from sound and taking hearing devices off.” Especially in the early stages of the story I think it will be more noticeable, when she’s generally more overstimulated by everything, due to the mental state she starts the story with, so maybe that gives me some more opportunities to show her personally trying to calm down and how that differs from the other characters. Idk, like needing quiet to organize her thoughts? Yeah! Thank you, again! I’ll probably come up with more stuff while I’m taking notes or writing a scene, so this definitely helps to look back to, if I wanna include something! Thank you! I will! If you’re interested in the draft until now, you can also look into the first 3 chapters of it on AO3. Idk, it kinda keeps me motivated if I post the progress. Title: “The Uncrowned Lord Of The Sea” By: SheilaCid It’s also visible for people without an account. But yeah, thanks! LG

Hi, I’ve just seen your reply. I’ll definitely check it out on ao3. I love your ideas. Here are the answers to some of your questions: How does background noise sound when the processor is trying to filter it out? Background noise basically sounds like radio static. When the processor tries to filter it out, basically everything just gets really quiet for a few seconds, then gets loud again, then gets quiet again. Like the sound drops in and out. This is most noticeable with live music. Would playing with the coil by taking it off and on damage it? No, I do this all the time. It’s very fun to do and the sound does go off and on pretty instantly when I take the coil off and on. I’m not sure if I’m the only person who does this though, it might be an autism thing. Good luck writing your story. I’ll read it through and I’ll comment there if I notice anything that seems inaccurate. :)

Hi! Really helpful video, thanks for making it! I have one question - you mentioned that when it comes to hearing aids, about 2 meters distance with no background noise is generally the comfortable distance at which someone can hear another person. I was wondering if it's exactly the same with cochlear implants? Is the difference in effectiveness just that hearing aids require you to have some hearing ability in the first place?

Yes, that's the same with cochlear implants. Basically that's just the limit of the microphones. Think of it like speaking to someone on speakerphone, if you'd be too far away for them to hear you through the phone microphones then it's too far for the microphones on the Hearing aids or Cochlear implants. I hope that makes sense. :)

I have been thinking about creating a deaf character for a fanfic I’m working on. She is in space fighting evil, and I always of her feeling energy to work her way and fighting. But I often think it might not work. I was hoping if you had any opinions or suggestions to this. What do you think?

I think that sounds really cool. In reality, deaf people can't feel the energy of people (obviously). But if you're writing something Science Fiction, which I'm assuming you are if it's in space, then you can make up a technology which allows her to do that. Also, you don't really need to hear to fight. So I don't think that will affect too much.

Hi, I know this is an older video but I have a question One--if I'm not mistaken, a deaf person can have different severities of hearing loss in either ear, like next to no hearing in one ear and more mild hearing loss in the other. If so, then will hearing aids/cochlear implants even out their hearing, or will there be a notable difference between what can be heard through either ear's hearing aid/cochlear implant? Sorry if this question is hard to answer, it likely may not apply to you but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask

Do you have any recommendations on books with good representation of Deaf/HH characters?

Hi, since I got your comment, I've been reading lots of books with deaf characters. The best I've found so far is True Biz by Sara Novic.
