Deaf children and the Power of Speech

On the 8th June 2016 Auditory Verbal UK hosted an event at the House of Commons called the Power of Speech. The event was hosted to challenge perceptions of what deaf children can achieve and to show the impact of our early intervention programme for families of deaf children across the UK.
We want every family, who wants their child to listen and talk, to have access to auditory verbal practice close to where they live. There are still considerable gaps between the achievements of deaf children and their hearing peers and, as you will see through this video, this really should not be the case.
On behalf of all the team at Auditory Verbal UK, thank you to all attendees for taking the time to join us on the day.

You know, it really helps when you can sign to kids that the 's' is sugar sounds like an 'sh'.... or explain that the 'g' in 'girl' is no subject to the 'rule' because it is a Germanic word. Oh, and you can do cool things like explain English grammar. Benig able to provide detailed explanations helps speech and literacy skills. There's also the really interesting phenomenon of how Deaf kids of Deaf parents nearly always read and write English better than those of hearing parents. Strangely, they tend to be better users of residual hearing as well.

Why not let them learn BSL or sign language. What is so wrong with that. There is nothing wrong with being Deaf. Presenting these adorable children like robots to parents who cannot accept their child being deaf. Sure they can speak in the end but their communication through BSL or any signed language instead would be more helpful. Would they not be beautiful and amazing without Speech? It’s truly sad to see this. Although this is some years ago I hope someone sees this and can understand that any deaf child can do anything with out without speech. This is coming from a college student pursuing speech language and hearing sciences, wanting to be a speech pathologist soon to help deaf children use language and communicate with parents and others whether it be through sign language or speech. What ever the child is comfortable with. Of course there is many opinions on this, I just wanted to express my own opinion. It really saddens me to see that others cannot bare to accept their child without oral speech. There needs to be a conversation with another deaf adult who can help the children understand that even without speech and ability to hear they can make something of themselves and be successful in the world. Thank u.

This was terrible and horrible. Allow them their language. "Congratulations kids, you were not normal and therefore wrong. Now you can be like us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Terrible message.
