Guide to Lisa Kleypas: The Ravenals Series | Historical romance books

I decided to binge my queen of historical romance -- Lisa Kleypas! It's been a long time since I read a LK novel so I was very excited to binge the entire Ravenals series.

    Wallflowers is the best Kleypas series, but my favorite single book of hers is Dreaming of You.

    Ooooo so excited to talk to other people who've read the Ravenel Series! What I liked about them is that they followed tropes to the point of ridiculous, so I was less bothered by the out of touch reality. Cold Hearted Rake had me absolutely tee-heeing, Marrying Winterbourne reminded me of The Paradise. I remember looking forward Pandora's and Gabriel's novel, which I enjoyed, but it did seem that she wasn't following through on the characters she had created. I was so disappointed in Cassandra and Tom's story - it was more about self discovery for Tom. It did have nice fluff at the end, though I agree it falls weirdly flat as a series finale. Who could possibly be left? Unless they grow up dear little Carys :P

    I think I'm the type of person who can read the same storyline over and over again with different characters and still love every minute of it! I loved this series so much, more the later books, (book 1 got confusing), but I never really hate hearing the same troupes and storylines, I love it

    The Hathaways series by her is really good!! It's another one that kind of spins off the Wallflowers series, but it's executed better. I've read most of her backlist (except the Vallerands and a few standalone) and its all pretty good. I think my problem with the Ravenels is that she's started to recycle her characters and situations, so for someone who has read a lot of her work everything feels kind of stagnant and forced. It's still pretty good, but just not as good.

    I just read a Cold Hearted Rake and what you said about their romance taking a step back I felt that!! It started off so strong and then I felt like it was really dragging because we kept going to Helen 🤐 I'm glad the third book was better though

    The next one comes out in July 2021. You were a bit harsh in your critique but I'd agree that these aren't Lisa's best books. I think they are still good though. I never had to force myself to get through them or quit reading one though.

    Hi Lisa! Thank you for this video! I love LK but I DNFed Cold Hearted Rake and Marrying Winterborne. I was just bored and couldn’t get into the characters. I didn’t believe their chemistry and I just didn’t care, so I haven’t continued on with the series. However, please read the Hathaways series!!! It’s amazing and my favorIte LK series!! I think you’d really enjoy it if you love LK!

    I came across a new author on amazon by the name "Mary Selseleh" . You go through a series of different emotions reading her books. I couldn't put the books down for days. Suer engaging and just different if you´re in for a new adventure.

    I‘ve read the full series this year, and it was my introduction to Kleypas. I enjoyed it overall and didn‘t mind that the first book contained two storylines, but it did drag out the second book for me, when it didn‘t follow the same structure and didn‘t introduce the third book. I have since started reading the Wallflower series, and what I will say is that, compared to the Ravenel series, I have found it to be more questionable in terms of consent. I understand that the Wallflowers were published earlier, but having to take that step back is a little annoying, especially when you have an example of how it could play out instead.

    What issues of consent in Wallflowers? That's my all time favorite series and I've never noticed anything...

  • @snailglue9716

    @snailglue9716

    @@FeministFashionistaK It’s been a little while since reading them but here’s a few things I remember: *spoilers incoming* 1. The first time the characters in the second book are intimate, Lilian is heavily intoxicated, so cannot technically give consent. 2. Sebastian abducts her, threatens rape... and then gets let off the hook fairly easily in the following book, for it was but “a joke”, of course, can’t you see, Lilian? And yet, he never once directly apologises to her. 3. If I remember correctly, when Sebastian recovers from his fever, Evie initiates sex and he explicitly says ‘No’, which she disregards. I think Kleypas shows Sebastian’s POV as an attempt to legitimise Evie’s actions, but that is not how consent works. Hope that answers your question in parts 🌻

  • @remarkablylisa

    I would say yes because it gets confusing when all the characters keep showing up. And there are events that are set up in the previous book to make the next book happen

    I read them out of order. And really enjoyed it. I read 5, 2,3,4,6,1. I thought they held up as stand alone novels, and I hated the first book. I thought the guy was emotionally abusive, so it almost ruins the other books for me.
