It's launched! The first instalment of GUIDE RAIL! Let me know your thoughts in the comments. Not every video in the series will be THIS long, or just focus on a railway, but it should give a flavour of what's in store throughout the months.
We look at the history and the bright little engines of the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, the world's only miniature gauge mainline. Found on the Kent coast, this line has developed from a billionaire's plaything to serving its country during wartime and on to being one of the most loved attractions in the county. I've visited 3 times and can confirm - this is one characteristic little/big railway.
With thanks to FrontLineSteam for allowing me to use their footage throughout. If you'd like to see the full, unedited clips, check out their channel. / @frontlinesteam

The gauge is 15 inches (1/4 of standard gauge), but the scale of the locomotives is 1/3 size which makes them enormous in terms of loading gauge
The Bug 0-4-0 always reminds me of a Dire Straits song that's also named 'The Bug'. I noticed she has outside Stephenson's valve gear, just like the NZR 'H' class Fell engine. As for the 4-8-2s, I find it so odd that no standard gauge UK railway ever used this wheel arrangement, and that Hercules and Samson are Britain's only 'Mountain' locomotives.
I swear McAlpine has an innate sense of railways and engines in trouble
Great video on The RH&DR first went there and ween we had our caravan in Kent for many years it was always a summer holiday day out first went there in 1989 we always went as far as New Romney and the Model railway was always a treat to see happy days ❤️❤️❤️❤️ nice peace of history showing both maunsell and Gresley both attend the railways on special occasions
I know The RHDRs history very well, as I'm a developer for the RHDR Game, and Can I say, You absolutely nailed it. I had no idea about the Black Devil name plate. Brilliant video, can't wait to see more.

It would be neat if the A1 trust did something in memoriam given they're working on a P2 and one of the exchanged whistles was of a P2.
What a great guide rail video! My favorite steam locomotives from that railway is hurricane and the bug! I love Gresley A4 chime whistles they sound beautiful! This is a nice miniature railway and steam engines! Great job! ❤❤❤❤
This video was absolutely amazing. I might have to visit this railway for myself! I'm excited to see more of this series in the future. It really is great. Keep up the great work!
Hey tbf the mini A1/3 is probably more reliable than the full size A1/3. Cough cough looking at you Flying Scotsman 😂
1:12 I've Been On The Romney Hythe And Dymchurch Steam Railway Near Dover In Kent In England This Year And It Was Super Awesome. Thanks Mate. X
Superb film. This took me back to 1975 when I worked at Maddiesons Holiday centre in New Romney.
15:53 I never knew that they actually built one of them in my hometown. :O Oh how small the word is…
This was a great start to Guide Rail! I might consider visiting this lovely little railway

This video is a very good one, I'd love to visit the RH&DR someday. :)
A fine first episode! Would love to see more! Which engine(s) from this railway are your favorite?
Great Video, enjoyed watching it all.
I’ve been on this railway and I can confirm it does feel like you’re going super fast
A wonderful video and we'll researched history hoping to visit the line this year
Great video, Max! Love the extra history lessons you provided! People o\usually only talk about the railway's time in the war!
What i love most in this world just saved my life tonight a train im am blessesd to be looking at this video
This was awesome! Sorry I couldn’t make it to the premiere! PS. 4-8-2 types here in the USA are known as just ‘Mountain’ types

I don't remember the year, but two locomotives form California's much smaller Redwood Valley Railway in Berkley California, I know they had a hard time keeping up with the Express traffic, (The American 4-4-0 only has wheels around 1ft in diameter).
Black princes name actually more closely translates to busy bee with fleißig meaning busy and leischen being the German word for lily which is often used to describe a hard working female or machine which is also important to some people

Absolutely brilliant video! Makes my Chanel look even more amateur than I actually am! Transport Interests! Cheers!
This is one of my favourite heritage railways, each locomotive has so much character and its own unique story
The RHDR is a pretty cool railway.
Excellent video of the incredible history of the RH&DR. It is one of my personal favourite little railways and it the only 15 inch gauge railway that I like to visit the most.
I'm surprised you haven't mentioned the private 1/3 scale LMS Princess Coronation Class, that is somewhere located on this railway.
A great first episode, the format is pretty good I will look forward to what line comes next
This was brilliant, looking forward to another episode of Guide Rail! It was absolutely brilliant to see a railway from my childhood put into the spotlight and you really did it justice!
model railway gone to far is a hilarious thought
That looks nice.
Little Engines can do Big things!
I remember seeing that crash 8:40 in a news paper back when I was little.
Excellent video as always!
Dammm. Im going to London in 10 days but i dont have time to travel down to see this railway.
I am a little confused at the beginning you said there were five diesels but you only so two when you were showing all of the other trains
This is a great video on one of my favourite railways ever, nice going into the history of it, and I do find its wartime role quite interesting
3:43/7:13 Aww, it's Scotty and his little sister.

Great video Max! Just as a side note Krupp is pronounced how it looks (correct me if I’m wrong I’m not German). Krupp also built guns and designed the turret for the Tiger and King tiger Tanks.-Das Mann
You should do the Ravenglas and eskdale railway since you did this other 15inch railway
Interesting.
The Bug has an interesting livery. Toffee and chocolate... Reminds me of Rolo dessert pots.

What are the differences between Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway & the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway? I think, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway engines are perfect for the new Railway Series characters.
They changed tenders on many engines because they were short on tender.
I really wish I were as privileged as you. I want to visit the railways such as the Talyllyn, Ffestiniog, Welsh Highland and others. However I unfortunately live in the US and I am a Teen :(.

I believe it is very slightly under gauge. The locomotives are 1/3 scale so, at 15", the track gauge is a little smaller than it should be if it followed the same 1/3 scaling.

The Ravenglass is built up of single track sections, so trains can't pass each other unless in a loop. The RHDR has almost all double track like a mainline would.
