Worked much better than other guides, im in! I can't, however, seem to find ANY community layouts for the controller, let alone yours and I'm having a rough time doing anything rn XD

It's so nice to see you discover it and love it :) I played it back then on the Dreamcast and it was as cool as you can imagine. I couldn't play it online often or for that long because it was literally through the phone line 😬 But still it was mind-blowing stuff at the time for a console gamer kid like me. For me I think the magic is in big part about the scale. The fact that it's comparatively so small and limited makes it a lot more intimate and manageable, and then connecting with others has a totally different vibe than in a huge MMORPG. Plus the cute and unique sci-fi flavor of course. I don't have a Steam Deck yet but this is another push towards it so I'll come back for the guide when the time comes 😁

I haven’t been playing lately but funny enough I actually think about it! I just upgraded to the oled so might have to reinstall! I love the more intimate size it feels good. That’s a great way to put it!

Honestly, for new players I recommend playing on a specific ship of the Ephinea private server called US/Devaloka, which is a classic server that takes the game back to a state before the addition of Episode 4, therefore you only have access to episodes 1 and 2. (don't ask about EP3 it's some silly shit going on with that one.) I recommend this one because, it allows you to progress trough the game as you would in the gamecube/dreamcast versions, doing sidequests and completing the free explorations to unlock new areas, and it prevents you from accessing a REALLY BUSTED QUEST FOR LEVELING KNOWN AS TTF which is so OP for leveling that most players tend to spend their entire playthrough just spamming this one quest from lvl 1 all the way to your lvls 150's, it's that busted... not having access to this quest means you get to savor the game more.... However, this server is pretty empty, so you'd have to play the game as mostly a single player experience... so if you don't want that, then by all means play on the regular ships, just be weary of TTF....

Good ol Towards The Future the most played and most boring quest in PSO lol

Hey thanks so much for the guide. Finally got the game working on my steam deck. The ephinea forums guide and the lutris install script on the ephinea forums legit just didn't work. I assume it's the dll's which are the problem. But you explained everything really well.

​@kingsalami217 I've been playing on Ephinea for about a month now. I had an account on schthack more than a decade ago but that got wiped. Originally played the gc version on the official servers. It's very fun revisiting the game, and it seems like the pc version on Ephinea is the place to be these days. I mainly play solo though.

No, you're not wrong, this is unironically the first online RPG for consoles, made for the first ever console to come with built-in online functionality.

@@kingsalami217 Right now, honestly... PSO2 is in a very bad spot. From what I understand, Classic PSO2 is mostly dead, and the new one called PSO2 - New Genesis, is severely lacking in content, and most of the fans I talked to seem very disappointed with it. Which is a shame, cuz at least Classic PSO2 used to be a really fun mmo.

​@@kingsalami217 I didn't play the original PSO but have tried PSO2 NGS several times and it has failed to hook me. This one however interests me a lot. PSO2 classic does interest me a lot more but not enough for me to bother trying it out so far.

Thank you so much for this! I absolutely loved PSO when it came out on the Dreamcast. And you're right, it was definitely ahead of its time. Luckily I had access to the 56k modem at the time and I got to play with my friends and it was a blast. One of the most memorable games of my formative years for sure. Can't wait to give this a try on Steam Deck.

Awesome,let me know how you go with setup! I’m absolutely in love with it, I don’t understand why but definitely put way more hours in. What made you get it way back in the day? Did you play the single player games before that?

@@kingsalami217 I was living in Japan at the time, when the Dreamcast came out, so it was just really popular with my group of friends. We only had dial-up Internet so we were on a strict gaming schedule since our parents didn't want the phone line tied up for hours, ya know, lol. It was all our first experience with online gaming on console, so it was mind blowing. We grinded the heck out of the end game to try and get the best rare drops. Wait til you see what a Spread Needle can do!

Living in Japan sounds amazing, my partner lived there for a year makes me jealous hahaha. I remember when I wanted to play StarCraft with my friend over the phone. Having to try explaining that to my mum was impossible 😆. Playing pso is definitely feels like going back in time to pure magic! I never played it back then but if I had of I think my time would have been taken up by it.

Do you also have frequent crashes? I dont know if its an ephinea thing or steamdeck thing. Haven't found much help on this

Iv had zero crash’s tbh I put a few hours in. I’m not sure what’s causing that. I just upgraded to oled so I’ll have to reinstall and see how it goes

for some reason I cannot find your control layout, and all the ones I do find are completely broken and don't work
