#GuardiansOfTheGalaxy #HallwayFight #breakdown
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is amazing, and it features the best action scene in any guardians movie, and one of the best in the MCU: the hallway fight. We are going to break down this halfway fight frame by frame to show you these insane details you missed.
But also, I’m going to talk about why Gunn chose for this to be a one-take hallway fight, and how this whole sequence works so well because it is built around the characters. . And I’m also going to briefly talk about the history of hallway fights and take action scenes, to really give you some context for how this fight was put together.
See, hallway fights inherently work because they compress all of the action into a narrow space. The rules are simple: I am here, I want to go there. Hallway fights force the heroes into a fight or flight situation, where they have to overcome overwhelming odds to chieve, a straightforward goal-to get to the end of the hallway.
I’ve always thought they were partially inspired by side scroll gaming, which only presents the characters with one option-to move forward. I mean hell, Star Wars opens with a hallway fight. Terminator 2 featured a kind of hallway fight with Sarh and John running away from the T-1000 and being rescued by Arnold.
Doug: you just inspired me, I’m gonna quit this job and write a screenplay. Or a novel! Yes, a novel.
What’s it about?
Doug: No idea. Now quiet person, I am writing.
Good luck with that.
Now, back to what I was saying. In the 21st century, Hallway fights have become a showcase of choreography-both fight choreography, and camera choreography.
The very best sequences in a fight, or a dance, turn the camera into an indispensable member of the action. Especially if you;re going to pull off a one take action sequence.
Most people point to Old Boy’s side scrolling, one take hallway fight as the inspiration for this modern obsession with the format. It is a masterclass of one take action choreography, and since then we’ve seen an explosion of hallway fights. The Indonesian martial arts film the raid, Inception-and inception;s was even more tricky because that hallway was actually spinning around.
I think that overall, there’s 2 kinds of hallway fights. There’s the monster at the door, like in Terminator 2-o really, any horror movie where the last girl tries to get out of a house. Darth Vader in Rogue One is a perfect example of a monster at the door hallway fight-excpt in this case, we’re all actually rooting for the monster [clip.``].
But the other hallway fight is more like old boy-it’s the lone hero against overwhelming odds. This is of course a mainstay in martial arts cinema. But in most martial arts movies, we might wonder why the bad guys are waiting to attack the heroes one at a time instead of rushing them all at once. Hallway fights answer that question-it gives the heroes a chance to funnel the overwhelming odds into a manageable number.
Doug: Like 300?
Like 300. [high five]
Wonder ad.
Now, I want to quickly shout out our old firend heavy spoilers, who has also released a breakdown of the hallway fight, where he also goe sinto delta about the state of the MCU, where he makes lots of bad uns. Worth a watch, when you get don with this video. Now, back to hallway fights.
And these days, when I say hallway fight, most people immediately think of this [daredevil clip]. And that fight was amazing. Matt arrives at the building on death's door to rescue a kidnapped child. And camera trickery made this sem like it was one shot. Not for nothing though, the first MCU hallway fight scene was in Iron man 2, but daredevil blew it away. Instead Of quick cuts, the camera stayed on the action the entire time.
They would replicate this trick with the stair fight and Grab castle’s prison fight in later seasons.
I want to highlight this because hallway fights are even more impressive when they’re in one shot. I mena, long takes are nothing new-children of men, goodfellas, bonfire of the vanities-and of course the masterful funeral shot in Soy Cuba.

Truly disappointing to see Screencrush promoting a Generative AI app when they've been proven to have just taken work without consent, credit or compensation from hundreds of thousands of creators you would think a channel like this would try to support - to the point where the technology and databases that are feeding apps like these are facing a variety of lawsuits.

Disgusting to see AI art being promoted here. You know those things only exist by stealing from other artists, right? With all the gushing about movies this channel does, I would have expected way more respect out of you for the actual humans behind the craft

I loved how the slow motion team walk mirrored the guardians standing up as a team in the first film but was a backwards reflection. while first he was the most reluctant to risk his life, this time it's Rocket leading the charge. Before Gamora was quick to move to heroism but now she's the last one to accept responsibility. And Nebula who was a solitary villain, is now one of the first to March with her new found family.

That hallway fight was such a pleasure to watch! Definintely one of the best moments in this amazing movie

This one scene lets me know that Deadpool 3 is going to be in good hands. James Gunn couldn't have picked a better song for this scene everything was just so kickass. I love how everybody gets a piece of the action and how that momentum gets carried over to the final battle with the High Evolutionary where they all gang up on him and rip his face off it was just so fucking badass.

It’ll be hard for Marvel to top this beauty this style of fighting would also work for Young Avengers, Midnight Sons, and even X-Men in the future!
The hallway scene is def a fave fight scene in the entire MCU. Great stunts and timing. That scene alone showcased the characters' capabilities and stories without dialogues. James Gunn did an amazing job with every Guardian's character arc. I prefer this ending over killing one or two of them. I agree to what most of y'all were saying, it is a great film. I can't stop crying over Rocket's backstory and the ending scene. He's always my favorite Guardian. This is how you maintain the foundation of MCU - good directors, taking time on storywriting and production, a bit of nostalgia, good intentions and messages, beautiful visual effects, no stupid filler scenes, and giving each character a chance. About the casting, ah they are all good! Will and Chukwudi are amazing.
Chris Pratts smoothness with his double hand guns was great. It reminded me of his character in Magnificent Seven. I love how Nebula has become the heart of the group. It’s kinda cool that you can’t brake her. I was really hoping that we would see the Dairy Queen Peter from What if during the credit scene
The hallway scene was absolutely amazing!
0:58 I love that someone else actually remembers the old NES Kung Fu!
There’s no way y’all made a 17 minute video breaking down one scene. Of course I’m gonna watch.
this is an all time hallway fight. all time MCU fight. The moment, the music, the choreography, all of them going nuts. So so so good

Love that Daredevil hallway fight because he could have rescued the child without it but DD was sending a message! Earlier in the episode DD said he 'enjoyed hurting people.
Hell yeah glad you did this i saw the movie @10am Saturday to get it out of the way for spoilers and this scene had me seriously considering going right into the next showing to see it again

A friend of mine spoiled Endgame for me, never again.
Up until now, my favorite hallway fight scene of the MCU (and I'm talking proper MCU movies, not including Netflix series like DD) was Shang Chi's bus fight (yes, it counts as a hallway fight, even if in this case, the hallway is moving). James Gunn and his GOTG3 has now officially surpassed it !
I disagree with Gamorra only turning around because they're her ride. Yes she was reluctant but I think in the scenes prior to things were building up how she's becoming more and more fond with the guardians the way Peter expressed to her that she she's looking for people that care about each other
James Gunn could direct Mcdonald's menu the movie and it would be the hit of the summer 😂😂😂
During this entire fight scene I just sat there with a skit eating grin on my face. Loved it.
As soon as this scene finished I just knew it was going to be the talk of the town, what an amazing fight scene. I really hope marvel takes some pointers from Vol. 3 and let it serve as the standard going forward.
it reminded me of the church scene in Kingsman
The scene in DD season 2 with Frank Castle's prison fight is one of my favorite fight scenes of all time. Also, No Sleep til Brooklyn is just a great song in general.
I think of the black widow fight in Iron man 2 when I think of hall way fights. But that children of men 1 shot was AMAZING. Definitely one of my favorite parts of any movie.
I hope Nebula is in future MCU movies, I love her character
Amazing video as usual 👏 👏
Great breakdown !!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Brilliant. Watched so many Vol 3 videos but this may be my favourite yet
No other Marcel movie this year has come close to having such a great and fun action scene.
That’s a perfect assessment and why a hallway fight that could have potentially gone on too long or was just for show actually managed to help tell the story of the Guardians.
Another great video
nice one
That hallway fight was the most amazing fight, almost the best in the mcu. I thoroughly loved this movie!
Loved everything about this video!! I even learned something! 💕
This scene was epic. A full, grand-scale, Netflix Daredevil slugfest in one take. This was the icing on the cake. Guardians 3 jumped Guardians 2 and this scene was the catalyst. Great cinematography and perfect application of all the teams powers and tactical skills. Bravo.
Thanks Ryan and Doug.👍🏻
Loved this video… that scene of rocket shooting down and between his legs… chefs kiss
I want a prequel showing how gamora got to lead the ravagers and how she changed instead of how she would have if she stayed in 2014. There was definitely negative impacts where she convinced the team to fight ronin (not counting Drax) but in this movie she is back to be cold hearted with slightly more morals

I don't think she was leading them, I think Stallone is the leader
Thinkin bout MCU stuff, Shang-Chi's bus fight was a banging "hallway" fight, complete with a couple one-shots.
I love that in the first movie Quill needed to have a big speech and ask them all to SAVE THE GALAXY but rocket the true Captain just needs to say his ambition and the group follows no questions asked
The Spidey sense hallway fight against Mysterio was pretty epic too 👌🏾
Love the "I have no mouth and I must scream" reference!
Fantastic breakdown. The scene was epic.
I cant wait to see this fight over and over in HD
The hallway fight is one of the best ,and we'll executed fights in the MCU wish to get more unique, and thrilling action scenes in the future of the MCU.
Great 1 shot
Damnit, now I want to see this again now!!!
as soon as i realized it was a (quasi) oner i could not stop smiling. it was so good. after 2 hours of on and off crying, i was overwhelmed with joy. whew.
“I have no mouth, and yet I must scream.” Nice reference, Doug. 🤣🤣

I just felt like it was a scene we have seen many times before. The only thing I felt it contributed to the movie was to further Gamora’s arc as she learns to like the guardians
Was genuinely happy to see Drax get chances to kick ass in this film compared to V1-V2
I know some of it are combined using cgi but boi that scene is such an eye candy.
While watching it in the theater i audibly said this is the best hallway scene ever what a movie
I love the final fight against the High Evolutionary. Everyone coming in to tag team!!
I believe the Game of Thrones episode called the Watchers on the Wall had a masterful one take 360° shot inside Castle Black. That was quite a while ago and I hope I’m remembering the correct episode. As for the hallway fight scene in Guardians 3, I felt during the movie that it was a little too long. Many will probably disagree, but I felt like it was going on and on and on. Probably won’t feel quite that way if I watch the movie again, but it just felt like it wouldn’t end. Kind of like the rave scene in the Matrix 2. In actuality, it wasn’t that long, but it did feel like it went on forever while watching the movie for the first time. It was one of my few nitpicks with Guardians 3.
This scene and the scene where they absolutely roflstomp the high evolutionary were so beautiful. Just completely wrecking these dudes.
This was a phenomenal scene, but the last time the Guardians fight together is when they take down the High Evolutionary, which was also a great depiction of them working together to take down a more powerful enemy.

You're right! I'm so glad we got to see some avenging from the Guardians.
thanks for doing a video about this. Since watching your video on the Daredevil hallway fight, I always think of you guys when I see a hallway fight seen.... Just an FYI, Karen Gillan put out a KZread video recently of a week of her life when shooting GOTG 3. A rehearsal of the hallway fight is included. "A Week in the Life of Playing Nebula".
THANKS for this!!! Give Doug a shirt!!!!
15:38 It's a really small but great detail: Dave Bautista is known as "Batista" in WWE. His finisher is "Batista Bomb", a Sitout powerbomb. Some wrestler uses their finisher in the movie, like The Rock using Rock Bottom in Fast And Furious 7.
awesome sequence
I hope they release the table read of this movie. I bet they were all just big old bags of feelings.
Loved this scene, the beastie boys were perfect for this, I’m about to watch it for a second time
I feel like during the blip Nebula probably spent some more time with Tony Stark (and she seems to have a lot of nanotech in her body) I feel like she made a lot of upgrades for herself with possibly the help of Stark. Along with Rocket's arm. Rocket may have worked on some projects with Stark too since both characters are fond of building machines

That rocket shot is a conic cover too (I think).
John Wick 4. You know the one. It was maybe the greatest action scene in the last 20 years at least.
As much as I enjoy this channels breakdowns, between the part of the video ad/skits, the merch store ads, and the youtube pop in ads, getting harder and harder to watch.
Tony Jaa has a movie called the protector. One of the best one shots in cinema
My favorite MCU hallway fight isn't even a hallway -- it's a hallway with a closed door, ie: the Winter Soldier elevator fight. Because, you know, Team Cappy
This scene instantly reminded me of John Wick 4, as in this was a fresh new way to do a hallway fight. Best scene of the film
I also loved how they jumped the High Evolutionary. Everybody got a piece of him.
Fight for your cut on the merch Doug!
Extraction 2: Hold my beer.
Forgot to mention Extraction for one take scene- Chris Hemsworth
I know Ryan was going to make a video on the beautiful, choreographed hallway fight. I hope they do that for Born Again.
When I saw this scene in theaters all I could think is how in the hell did they shoot it? So impressive
“Say what you will about Thanos, but that was some strong craftsmanship” 😂😂 Doug cracks me up.
Nah, dont dismiss Black Widow's hallway scene like that. If it was the FIRST....then it was the first.....and it was good.

Snowpiercer. 👌🏼

The attention to detail is crazy
there's a modern one take film filmed without cgi or hidden cuts. It's a german low budget film "Victoria". One 140 minutes long shot. It won at Berlinallee. Definitely worth watching
Once again, you’ve outdone yourself
Rocket’s flick shot immediately reminded me of Optimus Prime’s move in the Transformers (animated) movie on his fight entrance against Megatron which of course is cool as hell but also foreshadowing the end of the movie
What is odd about the hallway fight is that they kill a lot of guards in that hallway. Then, when Rocket has a chance to kill the high evolutionary, he lets him live since he's a hero. But he just killed a lot of dudes
